Hello lovelies, today I will be discussing the world's oldest beauty products that you can still buy today dating back to the 1500s. Below is a list of the world's oldest beauty products starting from the oldest to the newest.
Santa Maria Novella Acqua Della Regina, 1533
buy.smnovella.com
This is the world's oldest continuously existing pharmacy, Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella is now well into its eighth century. In the early 1200s, the Dominican friars were making balms, pomades, and herbs grown in the monastery's gardens. The signature scent Acqua Della Regina was created in 1533 for Catherine de' Medici's marriage to Henry II, the king of France.
Farina Eau de Cologne, 1709
farina1709.com/gb/12-farina-1...
Farina was created by the Italian born and bred Giovanni Maria Farina, who first created Eau de Cologne as an attempt to recapture the sensory soul of his hometown while living in Germany.Farina is composed of essential oils from lemon, bergamot, tangerine, orange, neroli, and grapefruit married with dashes of tobacco, petitgrain, lavender, jasmine, thyme, and rosemary.
Yardley London Lavender Soap, 1770
rstyle.me/+nIoOIgpW3l9JMqI1sF...
rstyle.me/+Vq2OGFv2QqRoC_KglH...
Yardley is the oldest registered beauty brand in the world. The company was officially founded in 1770 but records show that it actually began in the 1600s when King Charles granted Yardley to supply soap for the city of London.
Pears Soap, 1807
rstyle.me/+78BsGur9_VTbN_h5X9...
Pears was founded by Andrew Pears in 1789 as a barber's studio in SoHo, London. In 1807 Pears invented the world's first transparent soap bar, which was initially called the English Complexion Soap because of its extra gentle formula.
Thayers Original Witch Hazel, 1847
rstyle.me/+L8M9YfNecB30Lf5wFl...
Thayers capitalized on the benefits of witch hazel extract that was made from a non-distilled shrub.
Penhaligon's Hammam Bouquet, 1872
rstyle.me/+a2r5W_j1lnh41QG5bF...
Penhaligon was founded by William Henry Penhaligon, a Cornish barber who moved to London and set up shop on Jermyn Street in the late 1860s. His first fragrance was Hammam Bouquet, inspired by the heady aromas emanating from the Turkish bath next door.
Vaseline, 1872
rstyle.me/+oRPuDSJxdCqvG8PlnN...
Robert Cheseborough founded Vaseline while prospecting for oil in
Titusville, Pennsylvania. He observed that oil rig workers were using "rod Wax" which was the drill residue to heal cuts and minor burns. The caught the chemist's imagination, and he spent a decade refining the rod wax to a clear white petroleum jelly that is now known as Vaseline.
Listerine, 1879
rstyle.me/+PaZkFBft2D4ZcXAuC9...
Listerine was developed by a Missouri chemist Joseph Lawrence as a surgical antiseptic, Listerine was named after Baron Joseph Lister, a pioneer of antiseptic surgery. Over the years, this combination of menthol, thymol (thyme), eucalyptol (eucalyptus), and methyl salicylate (wintergreen) has been used for purposes ranging from bathing surgical wounds and sore throats. Listerine hit the mainstream in 1895 when it caught the eye of dentists. Listerine became the first over the counter mouthwash to be sold without a prescription.
Ivory Soap, 1879
rstyle.me/+5L-kIypjci3q6tW4rk...
The chemist James Gamble, of Procter & Gamble, whipped extra air into a batch of Ivory soap bars, he not only created the world's first floating soap and one that was 99.44 % pure.
Smith's Rosebud Salve, 1892
rstyle.me/+OXLag6Gdqje4ZV929k...
It was invented by Dr. GF Smith as an all-purpose salve to help with issues such as chapped lips, razor burns, hemorrhoids, and diaper rash.
Shiseido Eudermine, 1897
rstyle.me/+dvxNG6SIyIwIHBYqKK...
Established in 1872 by Arinobu Fukuhara in Ginza, Tokyo, Shiseido was Japan's first "western-style" pharmacy. The brand's first beauty product - a softening lotion called Eudermine - was launched in 1897. This lotion can still be found on the Shiseido counters 120 years later and in the original packaging style if you look hard enough.
Pond's Cold Cream, 1907
rstyle.me/+asiM1ZWyj7umHW3AWC...
Ponds Cold Cream started in 1907 but dates back to 1846 when pharmacist Theron T. Pond extracted a healing tea from witch hazel that was perfect for healing small cuts, rashes, minor burns, and other skin ailments. This 'Pond's Extract' became the origin of what we now know as Ponds Cold Cream.
Noxzema, 1914
rstyle.me/+tbf6k_Y12XNKiLoHKS...
Noxzema was invented by Dr. Francis J Townsend in Ocean City, Maryland, this greaseless cold cream, which soothes skin and acts as a mild pain reliever, was originally called Townsend R22 and was prescribed to resort-goers for soothing their sunburn.

I can’t believe how many of these I use. I love Pond’s Cold Cream to remove my makeup. I use rose Vaseline for my lips. I have Ivory soap right now in my shower. Listerine sits on my sink as a mouth wash. I love vintage beauty but didn’t realize I used so much. There is something really poetic and profound using a product that millions have before you from varying generations. I really love it. Also, it wasn’t in the video but another one. I use the nightly Oil of Olay face cream. I’ve used super expensive night creams like Crem de la Mer but I actually prefer Oil of Olay. I like the smell and the thickness and it provides amazing moisture. I use Pond’s Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30 every day under my makeup.

Everyone used Noxema for acne in the 1960's....I loved the scent too! Grew up on Ivory soap floating in the bathtub; there were not many bar soap choices in the 50's and 60's...no scent really, just suds! I loved Pears soap when it was made in England...wonderful scent, clean wash & rinse. It's made in India now by a different company and just not the same quality or scent; I used to buy the bars and liquid at The Dollar Store but not since formula cha nged....too bad...ruined a great soap. I love your channel...very nostalgic, lovely topics, great research. Thanks for your hard work.

I bought the Rosebud salve at Sephora. This was before I'd actually read the ingredients on things. I now understand that it has Petrolatum in it which is basically Vaseline and if it touches the rest of your face, it can break you out. But if you typically have very dry skin and tend not to break out, go for it.

I use the Thayers Rose Witch hazel as my toner. During my teens I used Noxzema to cleanse my face & either Ponds cold cream or Johnson's baby shamoo to remove eye make up. I then slathered on Nivea. Very interesting video Laura Jane- I have tried many of the more recent products over the years...but didn’t realize their old time history was so incredible! I love the Yardley Soaps, and also use Pear’s soap, but as another reviewer mentioned, they probably have changed it and it has a rather strong scent. Love Pond’s, though I don’t use it regularly. I would love to hear the history of Cashmere Bouquet soap, it was the only soap my mother used as it “didn’t dry her skin”...but I-have ordered today’s version on line and the consistency is definitely harder and not as creamy. It’s amazing how old some of the other soaps and lotions were, and very interesting!! Loved the antique packaging and bottles, too- thank you!!

He followed the woman wearing it a long way across campus until he finally caught up with her to ask what she was wearing. After she told him, he said "thanks, I want to get it for my wife." During winter in heated homes I use it to coat inside my nose to prevent drying. Great for lips too. They also make an Orange Essence Facial Cleanser that warms when you apply it and rinses off with warm water. Treats the skin to moisture and really cleans. This and Lancome eye makeup remover are outstanding products and must halves.

I'm only 35 but I started using the Ivory bar soap on myself and my 7 year old son about 3 months ago when after many fails from various body washes and soaps that kept making our super sensitive skin worse, we were sick of having to take Benadryl just to bathe so anyways, I found the Ivory bar soap at my local Dollar General and it's been fantastic. All of those perfumes in other soaps and body washes can aggravate eczema

Captcha Neon Same! Everytime I try to use something else my skin gets irritated. My daughter also loves how it floats in the tub, and will try to balance her toys on it. ☺️

Ivory soap is super great for making your own laundry detergent. My mom has used ivory soap for making laundry detergent for YEARS! It’s much more gentle on the skin than tide detergent

Really fascinating look at a certain aspect of history. It wasn't that long ago that the cosmetic industry was born. We are so lucky to have what we do today, with the input from chemists and the pharmaceutical companies. The smells, infections, and general health/hygiene issues not that long ago, would have been horrible!!

I’ve used Thayer’s rose scent toner and I do like it. Sadly many of these products aren’t cruelty free but this one is. I also like the rosebud perfume co tin lip balms at Ulta or Sephora as a vintage find. I also found the grandpa soap co I’m curious to try since says founded in 1878.

This was so fun to watch! I only wish I could post pictures. I have and use many of these products on a daily basis. I have Listerine in my medicine cabinet along with Vaseline and three versions of Ponds new line of moisturizers. I also have Noxzema in a pump bottle on my sink and use it as a daily face wash. It's perfect for that! I've used it since I was a preteen and I just became a grandmother this past year. When my second son was born he had sensitive skin and the doctor recommended Ivory soap which is exactly what my mother and father used for our baths when we were children. My father always said it was very mild and because it floats, he didn't have to constantly search for the soap under water. I had also heard of Pears and have purchased Yardley lavender soap many times over the years for gift baskets and stocking stuffers.
