So... I get the joke, but Hadrian's wall was much more effective than just requiring people to just hop over. First of all, it was made mostly of wood, because building stuff out of stone and brick in those days, especially without logistics support, was less feasible. But it was built very strong with similar methods to ship building, and it was manned and guarded, complete with gates and ballista emplacements, as well as proper corbels, parapets, and machicolations. Just all made out of wood, not stone. It was a proper wall, not just a fence. The remains today are indeed stone, but that was used for the foundations, which is of course why they remain today, because that part of the wall was built to really last. You can see along the wall protruding sections where there would have been rooms and areas for sleeping, war rooms, break rooms, all kinds of rooms, built into the wall itself, on the English side of course because you don't want to be caught unawares by barbarians just trying to have your morning scones and tea. But there are some remains of full-scale barracks and everything scattered about along the length of it. This is part of how we know it was a really effective wall.

@remielpollard787
@remielpollard787 2 года назад
@@demonking86420 in those days, in Europe, not so much, especially for something they needed to build fast. Stone was heavy, and would need to be transported, requiring quarrying and extensive logistics. The stone up the top of the wall would also need a lot more support in order to not just crumble to the ground, meaning construction would take a lot longer and require more extensive engineering. Wood, on the other hand, was something the Romans already had a lot of experience with in fortification construction. They mastered the art of wooden armour. I can't remember what the method is called but basically, you make one layer of wood with vertical planks, and another with horizontal. This is also how ships were built to be so solid, and an art that carried on into the classical era. Those kinds of fortifications made from wood still required a serious siege army to break, and as I said above, the Romans made very tough wooden fortifications. They often found themselves far outside of any reasonable lines of logistics, and had to master the art of using local materials to build what they needed, including roads. There was one very famous road they made out of wood through a swamp, but again, I forget the details of where and when for the time being.

Forgotten wars happen to the best of us. The Netherlands was at war with Jersey from the 17th century to the 21st century, until somebody noticed we had declared war four hundred years ago, but nobody could find the peace treaty. So, we signed an official peace declaration with Jersey a few years ago, and now all is well again.

It was the Scilly Isles in fact. The Dutch signed a peace treaty in 1986 although some people reckon that they had no right to start a war. The Dutch were still right to sign the treaty though. Probably the longest and most bloodless war in history - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Hundred_and_Thirty_Five_Years%27_War. Worth pointing out that the Korean war is still ongoing. The bit about the Berwick Upon Tweed peace treaty made me look up whether Berwick was specifically mentioned in the 1783 Treaty of Paris (peace treaty between the United Kingdom and the United States). It appears not to have been, although the 1746 Wales and Berwick-Upon-Tweed would make that moot. However, I was reminded of one of the more obtuse provisions of the Treaty, regarding the Mississippi River, which might make a basis for an interesting video in the future. The 1783 Treaty of Paris between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and the United States stipulates that British citizens shall "forever" have the right to freely navigate the Mississippi River. At the time, the Mississippi was the international border between the United States, the Spanish Viceroyalty of New Spain (Louisiana Territory) and the British-then-Spanish possession of West Florida (now part of the States of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida). This may or may not have been abrogated by Pinckney's Treaty of 1795, which claimed to exclude anyone not American or Spanish from the river (or at least the part that formed the boundary between the United States and Spain). In 1803, the Louisiana Territory was ceded to the United States by the First French Republic (which took over the Spanish claim in 1801).At that time the MIssissippi became internal to the United States ("flowing unvexed to the sea" since with the exception of the Civil War). The thing is, Googling the question, "do Brititish citizens still have the right to travel the MIssissippi" I don't get a terribly clear answer. I am tempted to write a letter to the US Coast Guard and ask them what their policy is on this today.

Please tell me you eventually wrote them a letter. Because I do wonder if they will honor this agreement, or there was some other one later on that states something along the line of "No one without a visa is allowed to enter the borders of the country" and this nullifies previous agreements of unhindered travel.

Your maps are better than your history. The Antonine wall was definitely to keep the people North of it from coming any further South. It was defensive. Hadrian's wall -not really. There were very few people between it and the Fort-Clyde valley (90 miles away) and the sparse population in between was fairly amenable to the Romans. It was more a customs post, producing revenue and, above all, a containment measure against the Brigante. They were the people of Northern England with whom the Romans did have trouble. As in Hungary and elsewhere, a common Roman tactic against a resistant people on the empire's border was to build a barrier BEHIND them. This cut them off from allies beyond, real or potential, and controlled their trade and contacts. The Brigante had well established trading routes to Leith, which was really one of their main ports, and alliances in Midlothian. The wall meant they could be invigilated, their trade taxed, and it deprived them of a potential hinterland for escape and reorganisation. Though the tactic was used elsewhere, Hadrian's Wall was the most physically impressive of such barriers built. The others were usually more akin to the Antonine Wall.
@LynxSouth
@LynxSouth 4 года назад
Was it really the wall that cut people off from their allies etc. beyond, or the wall plus the troops that were garrisoned on it? If it was just a wall, they could easily have built ramps or knocked openings through it, right? I appreciate your post and explanations.

Martin James Hadrian’s Wall was more a message to the Romans not to go any further, as Jay said, the Romans thought the southern part of then-Brittania was worth it, but the northern part was too dangerous to take. Hadrian constructed the wall to tell future emperors “hey, maybe don’t bother these guys, they’re pretty dangerous.”
@jamesmcatear8721
@jamesmcatear8721 4 года назад
Guff. The wall was defensive. The other walls throughout the empire were too. Off course there was trade. It didn’t make sense to build all that with its chariot roads and forts for soldiers just for trade.
@MartinJames389
@MartinJames389 4 года назад
@@jamesmcatear8721 Defensive against who, exactly? Containing and controlling more like -of the Brigante. The Roman empire jumped over other groups or tribes on the margins which were giving them trouble and built a wall BEHIND them.. That severed their links to others beyond their own territories and brought them under control. There is a similar example in Hungary.

Love the show, but to be a pedant when Berwick was incorporated into northumbria it was explicitly stated that in future treaties Berwick would be counted as part of England, so they weren't technically at war with Russia at all, the peace treaty was just a publicity stunt.
@marctelfer6159
@marctelfer6159 5 лет назад
I was coming here to see if anyone spotted that. While a popular myth, Berwick-upon-Tweed was never individually mentioned in the declaration of war, so of course it wasn't mentioned in the peace treaty either, and since 1746 all mentions of England automatically included Berwick (as well as Wales) unless otherwise specified.
