I can't say I've ever given much thought to football in India, as it's obvious how much more popular cricket is. Given it seems to be more popular in certain areas - and India is such a big country - might it make more sense to organise leagues at a regional/provincial level in places like Kerala and West Bengal? That would still allow for a knockout tournament at national level, which is obviously modelled on the IPL.

Imo, Thai football has the same major problem as their neighboring countries, like Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Philippines and to some extent Singapore and Brunei. Their FA is filled with corrupt people with short-term visions, and yet a strong sense of rivalry but only against each other. Their main priority is not even the AFC, AFC is not important. What's important is the AFF. As long as they're still on top of their fellow AFF rivals they'll stop there. They're fine with losing to Japan 5 - 0 as long as they still win against Vietnam 1 - 0.

That's same as in India, only people from poor background are able to pursue their dream. Kids from better background are expected to study and not "waste" their time in such sports which doesn't have a large audience and support.

It's hard to develop talents when the talents don't have the proper nutrition to fully develop physically and mentally. However, it doesn't mean that it's hopeless. Look at South Korea. The younger generations are several centimeters taller than their parents, all due to having enough quality food to eat. Kim Min-jae would not have been able to exist in pre-industrialized South Korea.

I am Turkish Iranian, and the state of Turkish football is sad and pathetic specially from outside when I came to visit Turkey couple of times, I barely even saw training pitches and facilities for youth to play the sport, never mind an active youth football system. The German Turks unfortunately gave us Turks an excuse to not invest in our youth and the league only clearly cares about the score than quality or playing style

Everyone talks about India’s potential yet so long as these backwards attitudes remain potential it will only ever be. So called “anti-nationals” are not so much a threat as are “anti-rational thinkers” to the future of India.

It has nothing to do with nationalism or being anti-national. Praful Patel is from the NCP, which doesn't believe in nationalism. The problem is corruption, not with nationalism.

No body is calling you ANTI NATIONAL . If you think that you are a ANTI NATIONAL then be it. Leave the country and get settled in AFGANISTAN or PAKISTAN to experience real freedom .

It would have been beneficial for football in USA, Mexico and Canada too. Tougher World Cup qualifiers mean it's harder for them to qualify, but in a long run that would make them stronger. Of course, qualifying means money so their football federations probably won't be so keen on the idea, but I hope they make it happen

Because there is no competition in cricket. And whole money gets pumped into it.

USA takes it everytime because of NBA And the craze it has for basketball. Registering for a sport and being a contender for winning is altogether a different thing. Cricket has only 5 teams. And structure of tournament in such a way that it favours INDIA.

We are not even in the top 10 of worst run teams. It’s flooded with overpopulated countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan or China. Male football never really lack funding, there’s always interest in the game. The reality is that we don’t have much qualified people in the leadership of the footballing scene, not just the VFF but nearly all V-League clubs are run by people that know jack sh*t about football or are too corrupt or too inexperienced.

Then again not since Uruguay won the cup in 1950 has a small nation won it. Brazil, Italy, Germany, Argentina, France, England, Spain are not small countries.

it equals a **large** talent pool, ie a large number of players to choose from. and statistically, the more players there are, the more talented ones there should be.

I have also made a video about this! Football might not be the most popular sport in India overall, but as I said in the video, it is the most popular sport in e.g. West Bengal, which has a population of over 100 million people. That's bigger than the population of Turkey, Germany, or the U.K.!

I get what you’re saying but you CANNOT try and say that India’s football federation isn’t poorly run. It literally is and always has been for the majority of India’s modern history. At least Iraq has the obvious excuse of conflict. India has had no conflict and has far more money than Iraq and Syria to allocate funds to football. Yet India still gets spanked by them on a yearly basis.

@@bababababababa6124 Iraq’s football trouble started even before the American invasion. They just used it as an excuse.

Iraq has it's fair share of problems but lately has seen a significant improvement under the coach Jesus Casas. I'm aware the conditions there aren't ideal and Iraq SHOULD be much better than they ar, yet, there's many other countries that got it worse atm, specially most of India's neighbours

@@valleyshrew Iran's position doesn't reflect their reality, which is an inflated team. The reality is Iranian players are only worth for second tier leagues in top 5 of Europe. But Iran isn't a democracy whatever.

Iran are definitely perennial underachievers but c'mon man, so many other countries in Asia have it worse (including India), at least Iran are still able to consistently qualify for World Cups and has seen some improvements lately being competitive there

USA should follow J-League's model as a next step. MLS has too many teams already and now lower divisions should be a priority. Mexico should follow J-League's model to get away from their league trying to copy MLS

@@buenaventurasdog2797 - I suppose vast size of countries such as USA and India does hinder this process, (same as Saudia Arabia and Canada for example as well incidentally, even though their populations are much smaller). But yeah, promotion and relegation is so important
