More Metalwork!
The problem with cars is.... they have 2 sides. Odds are if the quarters, rockers and floors are rotten on 1 side..... The other side probably ain't lookin so hot either. So today we get to work on the passenger side of this crunchy 57 Chevrolet. Unfortunately I only had the rear quarter patch on this side and there is A LOT of filler up front... With the car tacked back together, I hope inside and cut out all the remaining floor.
This car is starting to come together in a hurry. Once the floor pan is in we can start to focus on the mechanical. Motor? Transmission? Suspension? What a concept....

Love this build. There has never been a better case for "get off your butt and finish your project". Most armchair builders would either take years to get to this point or never pull the trigger and do it.. I admit the availability of cheap welders has helped get people on the move with replacement of sheetmetal. When I was a lot younger the cost would have made this a total write off. Looking forward to your next move on this one, thanks for another great episode 👏

1.5 MILLION, I know of 3 melting into the ground, back on the road is back on the road, next guy can go broke on it not to mention the guy Dan got it from had that plan, 9 outta ten get ripped apart & dad dies before it’s ever started & goes right to the scrapper, seen it happen time & time again
@vans1107
@vans1107 8 месяцев назад
yeah I was thinking the same thing when he dragged this car home, looked like a 210 with no bel air trim/stainless, could barely find any pictures online of one. Looked up the numbers and of those 1.5 million 57s built only a little over 23,000 bel air hard tops were built. Can't imagine many are left.

I'm sure you have heard it before but, you should use some foam under those knees. Coming from an older guy who knows bad knees. Just an old couch cushion and kick it under the car when not in use. Love the build. I remember Dad's 55. It was a Belair and salmon colored with a red interior. Love the style, thanks for sharing.

I am enjoying the videos. If you squint your eyes and look at the roof it from the passenger side it reminds me of the 1970s lace that was very popular. I did that to an old Nissan I had and all I used was an old sheer white curtain, turned the air pressure down on the gun and oh my goodness it came out so awesome. I think your 57 would look so awesome if you took an old piece of lace laid it over the roof and sprayed it.

You and Ian Russell wield the "wheel of death" with what seems like reckless abandonment which scares the heck outta me. We just had a friend return to the Dominican Republic for the winter sporting a major bandage on his leg from an exploded cut off wheel. I do urge you to be careful.
@fruitfarmfords8243
@fruitfarmfords8243 8 месяцев назад
Usually the danger in a cutoff wheel comes from how it's operated. Never had one come apart unless I was doing something dumb or abusing it. Don't bind it up, don't cut in the wrong direction causing kick back and don't use one that's been dropped and cracked. Oh, just to be sure, don't have the edge lined up with your eyes or jugular... lol
@Frankinsteinguitar

Both guys that I know who have had injuries from exploding discs are long time veterans of hot rod building. They both figure it was a flaw in the disc itself that caused the incident; these day with things coming from Asia, who knows how the quality oof the end product is controlled. Caution is the order of the day. @@fruitfarmfords8243

@keithroute8906
@keithroute8906 8 месяцев назад
Your doing good Dan. Don’t worry about what people say, most people that are not pros at car restoration are hacks. They probably started out as one. I know I did compared to what is acceptable now. Things change as well, welders are better and easy to use, Bondo is better, tools are better and techniques are better. In the seventies people would drill holes in the panels “so the Bondo would have something to hold on to”. Good practice so it was thought back then, now you would never do that. In the sixties we brazed a lot of panels in, that would be considered hack now days. Nothing wrong with how you are fixing a bottom rotted car on the cheap. Great that you had those old patch panels, makes the job easy. Whoever riveted on patches and smeared on the Bondo thick was a hack. Just a step up from screen or chicken wire which is in a few old cars. When I was a kid I once made what should have been a pot metal corner extension out of fiberglass and Bondo for my Chrysler. True hack job but there were none in any of our local junkyards so I made it. Way to do your thing, you are doing great and your skills will get better and better.
