What’s concerning me is the lack of Atmos on physical copies but they include Atmos on digital copies…call me a conspiracy theorist, but I feel this is totally done on purpose to discourage us from buying physical media and buy digital…and one of the reasons I say this is look at all these companies dropping physical media.
Yes but i prefer a dts-hd lossless audio vs compressed atmos. You can always upscale it with your receiver. When that happens i use dts-hd +neural x or auro 3d.
@@P-LOWN1997 good point, I do the same. It’s just a little disappointing that studios are just too lazy to make an Atmos track for films that could actually benefit from it.
I purchased the Turbine German 4K Steelbook for Black Phone and it's excellent. I also purchased Devotion on 4K from the Netherlands and, that disc does indeed have a killer Atmos track.
George Lucas is an easy target for most and I think that’s put American Graffiti in an unfair position among us physical collectors. Movie Collector’s review of the 4K transfer I think does a better job at explaining that the transfer actually looks closer to what it looked like in cinemas upon its initial release and how the way it was initially shot (in techniscope) could provide some important resolution context that a lot of people seem to have overlooked in favor of pulling out the pitchforks and torches again.
Agreed mate George is an all time great and just because people are mad at him for adding things to Star Wars even though those were his original visions they just crap all over him
@@raidersofsteak2227 I couldn’t agree more on both of your points! I don’t blame George for selling off Star Wars and getting out of the limelight and away from bloodthirsty fans. I can’t imagine what it must feel like to have something you created and envisioned essentially stripped away because of a weird sense of implied ownership that fan base has over those films. Which, is kind of ironic with regard to physical media, right? We want to own physical copies of our movies, but heaven forbid an auteur/director keep a slice of what’s theirs.
u stay in your echo chamber bubble...convince your self it good thats fine OK. However I strongly disagree.... no point arguing when facts speak for them selves enormously.
I haven't seen most of the notoriously terrible 4Ks like Terminator 2 and Pirates of the Carribean. However, I did watch Love, Actually a few nights ago and it is easily the worst I have ever seen out of my collection of 200+ releases. It doesn't just seem like someone did a bad job with the transfer, it seems like the wrong video file was put on the disc. It is atrocious at times. I feel like if this was a geek culture centric movie, there might be enough of an uproar to have Universal take notice and maybe do something about this. But since it is just a rom com, my guess is that this won't be addressed, and we will just have to wait years for some arbitrary anniversary edition and cross our fingers. EDIT: I just went to Universal's site and used their contact form to see if they have any comments on this. I doubt anything good will happen, but it is worth a shot.
Here are a few that I have had issues with this last year number three: the last four Chucky movies by Scream Factory because the first three were chock full of special features and the last four had a few but not that many, I think as of late Scream Factory has been dropping the ball a bit as far as special features go. Number two: Warner's edition of Enter the Dragon,. Because they put both versions on the same disc and not with seamless branching, both full movies which takes up a lot of bitrate. And my number one worst 4K movies of the year: both Avatar movies and that is because of the agameless way Disney handled the home video releases They both came out about 4 month ago with hardly any extra features and only the theatrical version on part 1. now, VOILA ! this month they come out with four disc versions of both films with loads of extra features and the two other versions on the first part. Now I know Disney knew what the hell they were doing and they did it this way on purpose to make fans of Avatar double dip, shame on you Disney!
Not just Atmos, a lot of movies, mostly from Disney and Warner Bros, don't include Dolby Vision in their physical releases. But they include it in the digital version, or on Disney plus and Max. 😑
I agree with some of your pics, but 100% disagree with your Physical Graffiti pick. Especially to have it number 1. I think it looks great. I also feel it looks better than it ever has. Love the channel.
American Graffiti big letdown, I was so looking forward all year for the 4k, but thank you Adam and others who gave us early warning about its substandard transfer.
Did not see the issue everyone had with American Graffiti. I did not find it to be DNRed as much as everyone else did. The colours are vibrant but it had plenty of detail. Did I just get a different transfer to everyone else?
It wasn’t until this year that I found out they are doing MOD 4Ks and I can’t stand that, I would have added Kiss The Girls, it was bad. It’s also why I cancelled A Bronx Tale. I think for next year I’m just gonna buy boutique label titles, not many newer films coming out next year anyway.
Nuts to the #1 title, as it’s coming in the mail today from amazon and soon. I wish that I had known sooner. Oh well. I was actually pretty excited for this one too, as it was on sale, now I know why hahaha.
Thanks, you’ve nailed it when mentioning your reasons for placing Sisu and Devotion on you’re 7th and 8th spots… I had my basement renovated into a expensive dedicated home theatre set up ( with wet bar, half bath and office )… What were the studios thinking? Not having a object based Atmos on both of these discs is a noticeable disadvantage in action scenes.
American Graffiti was one of my most-anticipated releases of the year. It broke my heart when I saw the reviews -- but at least I didn't waste any money on it.
Shout Factory/Scream Factory’s flat-out denial that there is any problem with the 5.1 audio is infuriating. I’ve even read that one of the quality control personnel wanted to go over the audio before finalizing, and they refused to allow him (something along those lines, anyway). This adds insult to injury, as the person made a statement that he would have caught the error, and the correct 5.1 mix would have likely made it onto the discs. Shame on you, Shout Factory/Scream Factory!
Didn't know there was an issue with criterion princess bride 😮 Bought mine early November on amazon and never sat down to watch (free time not in abundance). Thanks, i better open it up and make sure it plays!
Unfortunately Scream Factory ignore issues about their 4Ks, one example was The Craft 4K compression issues in the beginning of the movie. This is why I been waiting for reviews when they release a movie in 4K.
If it wasn't for the firmware updates, Nightmare Before Christmas would have been the worst due to completely unlistenable audio. It has been fixed at least, so American Graffiti would probably be the worst due to the DNR use. Sadly, the 4K is still better than the Blu-ray, which was also a misfire. The THX laserdisc might be the best official release.
Are there really that many people with ceiling speakers installed? I've had surround sound since the 90s, but I've never lived in a place where it would have been a good idea (or even possible) to put speakers on the ceiling. Lossless 5.1 tracks are pretty awesome these days, and I'm happy with them.
I liked the core and was going to buy the 4k version but not now shame hope they will go back and give it a more proper remaster to 4k. At a guess it wasn't all that well received by the reviews of this film maybe that's why but then again why bother if that was the case.
I was disappointed in American Graffiti initially but there's another physical media reviewer who explains the visual quality of the transfer is due to the source material. evidently this movie was made using budget film and techniques because so much of it was shot in low light. it simply is what it is. at least it's slightly brighter, more colorful, and the sound is better.
It’s not good enough that some studios and certain directors treat 4k so badly. As collectors and paying a premium for what should be the cutting edge of movie transfer both sound and picture we get shafted. I am dreading Cameron again botching great films like Abyss and Aliens. Shame on them. Especially Cameron.
Hey Adam. I’m late to the game in getting my promising young woman disc replaced. I never saw anything about a replacement program. Are you able to point me in the right direction so I can replace my disc? If it is too late to replace, is it safe to assume that if I re-buy this title, it WILL include atmos? Thanks!
Not a fan of Atmos on movies that weren't actually recorded in Atmos; but still, for folks who like that sort of thing it's a real bummer that the track is only included on digital.
Great video, as always, Adam. We love these E.O.Y films. Gutted about Love Actually as i really love it. But we totally loved SISU as a film and were really happy with the soundtrack as we're not really audiofiles, we only have a pretty good LG soundbar. We can't wait for the reviews on the Cameron films, and if The Abyss is a great transfer we'd have to import it as our BBFC has made it , so its been cancelled due to the ratgate scene. Keep up the good work 👏
It’s becoming painfully obvious, that I am most definitely *not* cut out, to be a film reviewer (technical aspects,) as JUST last night, I watched American Graffiti, and thought it looked FANTASTIC!! I didn’t notice anyone looking particularly “plasticy,” whatsoever. I also though that people got *way* carried away, with Pirates of the Caribbean. That *also* looked super awesome to my eyes!
Well, I don’t know about the whole thing on at most on digital streams, every this guy ever owned/UHD, Blu-ray, and I do own a lot usually have at most or DSX before digital, a perfect example is Independence Day and Jurassic Park, I will purposely put on my desk before streaming them simply to have that DTSX atmospheric experience, especially with those movies, since they’re very affected driven Scenes, and it’s not as much as being an audio file to have at most or DTSX on the disk it’s the nature of the content that we are deciding to purchase digitally or UHD, Blu-ray, movies from back of the day/70s, and 80s were always mixed at a certain standard, Either 2 to 4 channels but everybody keeps forgetting the fact that they were tracked in 24 to 48 different tracks before it was mixed down to those formats back in the day, the only advances we have now is everything since 92 on up, at least 80% back in the 90s is digital audio rather than Analog tape, even the cheapest movies like alien and terminator, which had only a couple million dollars to work with had over 24 to 48 tracks or in between, perfect example of this is enter the dragon, which was released in 73, of course, they gave it an at track, But we didn’t get lost boys or potter guys, that’s a huge movie, poltergeist, one of Steven Spielberg, first Classics, ET, and we even got ET as an example of DTSX only on the UHD Blu-ray, it sucks that there’s not an Atmos alternative online for streamers for these particular movies, but yeah, I’m rambling, good list, I agree with just about every pic
My copy seemed OK. Maybe it is because I don't have a good home theater system, so the glitches didn't manifest themselves. I'm glad I didn't upgrade my Love Actually to 4K. Wonder if The Man in the Iron Mask will be worth the upgrade. Hmmmmm
Just because Devotion doesn't have a Dolby Atmos soundtrack, doesn't make it one of the worse 4K releases of the year. Even without Dolby Atmos, the movie still looked and sounded good. Remember, we've once didn't have Dolby Atmos, only DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio.
It’s worse in the sense that Atmos exists, on digital, and the studio knowingly left it out. Its inclusion on the list speaks to the studio itself and that is why it is on here.
@@MovieGuy365 The A/V quality of digital movies are inferior to their physical media counterparts due to the compression. I would prefer the 4K disc (with the DTS 5.1 Master Audio) than the digital with Dolby Atmos because of its overall superior quality. I know Devotion is not a Christopher Nolan movie, but he doesn't like Dolby Atmos, and he doesn't utilize the sound design on his movies, theatrically nor for their 4K/Blu-ray releases. Movies that could benefit tremendously with Dolby Atmos such as: Inception, Tenet, Dunkirk, Oppenheimer, The Batman Trilogy, Interstellar. Christopher Nolan prefers DTS 5.1 Master Audio, but what can we do? We have no other choice but to accept and go with the flow.
I have a Samsung QD oled so it is really frustrating the lack of HDR 10 plus on physical 4k Blu-ray but Amazon prime digital steaming almost always has HDR 10 plus. So why should I burn £24.00 on 4k Blu-ray , if 4k Blu-ray dies the studios are to blame.
This is a bit random, but damn you can tell when a video was made by an audio/video enthusiast. Watching this on an a 4k OLED and with Sennheiser headphones, the audio in particular struck me as so clean and full range that it took me aback for a moment versus the standard for most RU-vid content makers, despite being a very simple talking head video with no fancy production.
What’s weird is where is the qc department, or do studios even have one. This has been going on for years, all the way back to DVDS. Doesn’t anybody look and hear a title before its goes to get duplicated for release. Anyone remember the mess Paramount did with Star Trek 4 blu ray disc when they dnr the shit out of it. What they did with Gladiator on Blu Ray. Paramount did right with Gladiator with the transfer and replacement copies. My point is studios must think we’re pretty stupid and don’t notice these things. I’m sure it costs studios a lot to correct discs and replace them. My point being if they did it right in the first place they would save money. A QC department might catch these mistakes before the final decisions are made. .
Why dont Warner care about the transfer of the rocky movies on 4k, even when tons complained they took no responsibility, VERY Bad Customer service, lets hope they all get a reissue with mr Stallone overseeing it all.
So many letdowns with great classic movies in 4K disappointed with the rocky collection and American graffiti and same with pirates of the Caribbean movies in 4K last year
well it's not 4k, the gilded age, season 1 was released and they did such a bad you can't even watch it everything in it look blurred out, just horrible
Thank you Adam. You did indeed. I think your deep honest dive into the exorcism scene as well as mention of the subway scene was enough for me to Pass because I have the 40th Blu Ray . Like you said just another link in the chain of home releases. I think I found your channel in April so I enjoyed my first year with your honest reviews and content Thank You
Wow glad your pointing these flaws out. It’s unfortunate I am getting into movie collecting in my senior years. It would be cool if you did a video on home movie audio and what all these different formats mean. Thanks 🙏
Most of the releases he recommends don’t have original audio or original theatrical presentations; they are just modern remasters with new atmos audio. If you want original audio and presentation you’ll need to look elsewhere
I just picked up Love Actually and I agree. Some scenes did look good, but to my eye, so many scenes looked blown-out like they tried to raise the brightness level too much. (I find this very weird since too many 4k movies look too dim. Love Actually is the first example I've seen that looked too bright / blown out.) If it helps people reading this: I watch on a 77" LG G2 OLED in either Filmmaker or Cinema mode, depending on the HDR format and what the LG set allows. (In other words, I try to watch in the most accurate setting; I never watch in Vivid or Standard modes.)
I disagree with your shade on American Graffiti. I watched the 4K disc last night and find the transfer very good and very clear. I for one like the scrubbing if the digital noise/grain m. I find it very distracting to see a bunch of dots / snow on the screen. I did not find the faces as waxy. I thought it looked good, so maybe thats the price to pay for no dots/noise. I also like T2 😊
This list is a reminder on why, even though I do have a pretty decent 4K collection, the Physical Media of choice is still Blu-Ray. Blu Rays bring the bang-for-the-buck with visuals, audio and bonus features let alone the cost savings. And at least with my setup, there is no visual difference between 4Ks and Blu-Rays 👀
4k is great. Almost like having the film reel in your house. There are bad remasters though when some overly happy summer student applies DNR where it doesn't belong. Keep the grain intact please.
