Instead of my usual best tips for moving to Mexico, I’m breaking down the WORST ADVICE I’ve heard for people moving to Mexico. From cheap cost of living in Mexico and learning Spanish to health insurance in Mexico and getting residency in Mexico, here’s the worst advice out there about the most important things you need to know about living in Mexico.

Been thinking about your video since last night. I think that you are pretty much on point with your advice. Lots of good info. As for moving to another country, it was easy to travel in a foreign country with one bag back in my twenties. I didn’t own anything. When we moved into our first house, everything from our apartment fit into the back of a GMC S15. Now that we want to move when we retire, it’s important to start to declutter and get down to essentials. Avoid the shock of suddenly parting with a lifetime of memories.

One of our Move to Mexico members spent six months prior to her move going through everything in the house that she'd lived in for 20 years. It was a physically and emotionally exhausting process. I think decluttering bit by bit is the way to go! Good luck, Indy 🥰

ALEX: just thinking out loud here with a suggestion. Did you ever think of retitling your RU-vid channel to backpacking brunette in Mexico? I say that only because of the RU-vid algorithms and the fact that people who may stumble on your channel who are really interested in Mexico may not take it as seriously. My understanding and I'm not a RU-vidr is that it's very easy to change your name of your channel. Assuming you're inclined to do so. You would not lose any of your videos. Everything would stay the same of course with the exception of the title change. Anyway just thinking out loud don't mean to be presumpti thank you for a very helpful video.🙏

I appreciate your feedback! It’s something I’ve considered since I’ve really niched down on RU-vid, but I feel very attached to the name…I’ve had my blog which has the same name since 2014 😅 it’s something to consider though! I hadn’t thought of adding “in Mexico” 🤔

Hi! I love your videos! I can't wait to visit Querétaro this summer. As one who has lived there for many years, have you noticed the build-up of the area? I mean, have you noticed that it's not as calm as it used to be? I've lived in a couple of communities in the US that have seen huge growth spurts. Sometimes that's hard on the people who have been there. I would love to hear your perspective on that. Maybe you could do a video if you haven't already. 😁🙏🏽

I don't like to think that I am a person who focuses on the negative but to know the worst advice is really good to know!! Again, a negative slant, but have you done a video on the top reasons why expats move back to the US or Canada? It's always good to know what can trip people up. Going in with eyes open so to speak. Thanks Alex! Always love the videos.

Great advice, particulary the health insurance. I was a little surprised by the cost and that they are liberal labeling things as preexisting conditions. Not prohibitively expensive, but might be difficult for someone on a very strict budget.
@alex-wittman
@alex-wittman 2 года назад
Thanks for watching, Denise! I completely agree that buying health insurance in advance of a move to Mexico isn’t an option for everyone, but if the financial situation allows for it, I think it’s something to at least consider!

Excellent, Alex. So many, with so little knowledge of Mexico, are planning on moving to Mexico because it is "cheap"., etc. The sad thing is that "common sense" is a flower that is not growing in most of their gardens.

Language teacher here: You can't just pick up a language like you think. You can only pick up what is comprehensible (which at first, is almost nothing). You're going to have to do some work to make things comprehensible. (research comprehensible input, Stephen Krashen, i+1)
@alex-wittman
@alex-wittman 2 года назад
I’ve found that people put way too much stock in immersion 😅 simply being “around” a language doesn’t mean you’ll learn it…especially in the case of adults. A real effort is required & having a solid base (yes, grammar!) will put you in a position to actually take advantage of immersion situations. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts, Jenny! What language do you teach?

Love your videos. Just wondering about insurance and medical care. I have heard so much stuff. My main question can you still get insurance for the big expensive stuff if you have preexisting conditions? I heard pharmacy doctors were only $5, so I figured I could pay for all the little things,. Second question, is there disadvantages of just applying for permanent residency right away. Thanks again.
@alex-wittman
@alex-wittman 2 года назад
I recommend talking to an insurance agent. If you're looking a quote from someone who speaks English and specializes in insurance for foreigners, reach out to Stephanie Kempker from Guardian Insurance MX for an obligation-free quote: stephanie@guardianinsurancemx.com To answer your second question, if you're thinking about bringing a foreign-plated car to Mexico, know that you won't be able to do that as a permanent resident...only temporary residents can do that. That's the main reason someone who is eligible for permanent residency might opt for temporary.

Thanks for watching, Brittany! A few things that have really helped me are making time regularly to catch up with friends/family (not waiting until I'm sad to do so) & having people in my life in similar situations ie other foreigners living abroad. When I lived in Madrid, I started an English-speaking book club for women & that was a great space to relax and connect with other people doing the same thing I was (living in another country).

My opinion is that it would be a waste of money to go to an immigration consultant for the visa in Mexico. It's a way too easy process for any consultant. Just go to the Mexican consulate website in the district you are living. Look at the minimum requirement for the particular visa you want.. Either a temporary or permanent. If you don't meet the minimum requirements, then forget about it.. You're not getting the visa... Period!
@alex-wittman
@alex-wittman 2 года назад
I think the visa is the easier part for most people since, as you said, it's very straight forward. The part people have trouble with is finalizing the process in Mexico (getting the residency card). It's especially challenging for people with limited Spanish skills.

If you’re interested in working with a broker, Guardian Insurance MX is a good option as they specialize in working with foreigners and have an English-speaking team. Another option in Mexico is Grupo Nacional Provincial. There are agents all over the country as it’s the largest private health insurer in Mexico.

Hi Alex, ice lived in Denmark for 17 years and speak Danish. My wife now is Spanish from Barcelona, and I'm struggling to focus on learning Spanish. We live in Australia and speak english together. My Spanish is beginners level I guess and my Danish pops in to my mind each time I try to think something or remember in Spanish. I have 3 grown up sons in Denmark and feel that Danish is important too. We are going to Spain in August for a three month trip and my wife's family doesn't speak english at all. We've been together for 7 years now and I still find it tricky disciplining myself to learn Spanish. I'm so regretful that I haven't immersed myself inorder to give me and my Spanish family a deeper connection whilst we are visiting. Any ideas and support would be good?

Have you checked out Lingoda, Glenn? I think it could give you the structure you need. I find the small group classes to be very motivating since you’re learning alongside people who are at your same level. When you try to learn a language on your own, it can feel very isolating which in my experience causes you to lose motivation.
