We don't acknowledge his contributions to society & women's empowerment enough in my humble opinion. Thanks to him we as women are allowed the power of choice.
“if women have millions of supporters, i am one of them. if women have ten supporters, i am one of them. if women only have one supporter, that supporter is me. if women have no supporters, that means i am no longer on earth. if the world is against women, then i am against the world.” - rhysand, probably
The fact that I haven't read the Court of whatever else series and yet know the fact that Rhysand created feminism shows that Cindy is running a educational channel
If garbage like that can get published, there's no excuse for "but what if my writing is not good enough". Bro, a publishing company read a book with fairy d**k and deemed it worthy of publishing, go and write that damn book.
Will never ever get over how Rhysand “it’s her choice” Night Lord chose NOT to tell his wife that carrying their child would KILL HER. He took a choice away about something that was literally life or death.
Like, I used to be invested in those books for like, 2 months and I couldn’t understand how the writer got characterization so wrong since that’s like, his main good character trait
At least Bella had more agency and hitched up with Rosalie and actually drank blood to keep herself alive. You know so her former sort of boyfriend could fall for her newborn baby. But hey, let's give her props for not being a doormat 😛
So I'm autistic and the whole concept of Talking To Strangers just is baffling to me. Like my entire life is spent misreading social cues and being misread in turn, but you don't see me out here committing violent crimes every single time there's a misunderstanding. Malcolm Gladwell really gives off "I'm an empath 😌" vibes tbh.
Yeah I was thinking the exact same thing. Already from the title I was ready to bet with a friend it was written by an NT. But then Cindy went more into it and ooof worse than I thought.
I'm also autistic and was also thinking the exact same thing. I scrolled through the comments to find this to make sure it wasn't just me with this opinion 😅
to be fair, gladwell's claim seems more like "misreading strangers and social situations can explain why dire situations with strangers *can* happen," rather than "dire situations with strangers happen *every single time* a social interaction is misread." so this comment seems a little in bad faith. that being said, i agree with cindy that he severely oversimplifies the subject he's talking about.
Same. I have nonverbal learning disorder and it involves me not being able to understand facial expressions and social cues and I do not violently assault or kill people because of that. Sometimes I feel sheepish, but not enough to contribute to these behaviors. It feels like the author is one of the people justifying this behavior to make herself feel better. Maybe not. Maybe she did not know how to articulate her point well.
I did wonder why Talking to Strangers was on this list since it was one of my favorite reads. But then I read up the criticism about it and I completely understand Gladwell probably used too much of "misreading social cues result in violence" kind stuff and not the typical understanding of misreading social cues. Her books sort of gave exemptions and not the norms eg: The introduction and use pf Sandra Bland's case. Some of the studies cited in the book looked a bit liked a placebo effect. (that being said I plan to read more of gladweel's books)
The way that we can blame Rhysand for so many of these books because without him there would be no feminism for these girlbosses to gaslight and gatekeep with
The fact that Cindy feels the same way about the ACOTAR series and ACOSF book as I do gives me joy. Did you know that they say the word " Mate" 202 times in ACOWAR 🙂
I have read many good books written by PoC authors this year. It's sad how sjm can write whatever she wants, no matter how bad they are, and she'll still be more recognised
That’s the worst part by far. I don’t even care that people like her terrible books, but can we be a little more objective and consider some other authors PLEASE?
Everyone looking for recs. Here are some Legendborn The Broken Earth Trilogy and basically anything written by NK Jemisin. You won't regret this trust me. Anything written by Octavia Butler. Anything by Ursula K LeGuin. She's noy PoC but she made her hero a PoC in the 60s and fought for a PoC guy on the book cover when the publishing house wanted to put a white guy on the cover even though the MC is PoC.
I’m glad that Cindy’s videos aren’t afraid to absolutely destroy sjm. I’m so damn tired of the entire internet having this obsession with her books. I read the first 3 books of thrown of glass way back at the beginning of covid and they were so bad that I got stuck in a 6 month reading slump
I have read TOG series and it is not bad. Maybe it was not your taste but i liked it. Please don’t ruin the series for other people. I know you guys expected better, but for me the TOG first started as ok but later Queen of Shadows, Empire of Storms and Kingdom of Ash we’re really good. It is normal, that some books are in series are not that great but it gets better.
Does anyone else think that Cindy needs to do a "Beauty and the Beast Retelling Throwndown" and have a whole March Madness style bracket to determine once and for all which BatB retelling is the BEST BatB retelling?
i want nesta and tamlin to date ooooo i want them to be so happy together AND I WANT THEM TO KILL A BELOVED CHARACTER i’m talking fan favourite. i want the fandom to suffer and i want nesta (before her redemption) to thrive. i love evil women.
I had a mental breakdown while reading ACOMAF and I saw I still had 400 pages left. I literally sent an audio to a friend crying. Dropped the book of course
I just find it interesting how sjm’s books all tell but don’t show. She tells us her characters are all these things yet their actions say otherwise. We are told Armen is this terrifying monstrous beast when all she does is growl at people, glare, and drink blood. Basically Edward Cullen 2.0. We are told Mor is this powerful being who is great at fighting and battles when the entire time she sits back and doesn’t fight. We are told Rhysand is this great person when the entire time he’s being a dick and treating people badly yet getting upset that they think he’s a bad guy. We are told Feyre is this powerful girl boss who can standup for herself and is a warrior when the entire time she’s letting her husband make all her decisions for her while she’s choosing out her 6th house and crying in her eggs. We are told Nesta is this vicious, cruel, horrible person when the entire time we see her actions of that of a person dealing with heavy trauma. Like make it make sense 😭
It’s the same in Throne of Glass. So many characters are said to be nice and sweet and kind, but all they do is fuck with innocent people and show kindness only to their own friends. Like, Celena/Aelin is constantly propped up as a saintly vigilante queen, when she only actually is good to her friends and children. She threatens to kill totally innocent people and talks about how she wants to burn and entire city to the ground because she doesn’t like it.
Dang, definitely sounds like a book I probably wouldn't be able to get through despite my love of fantasy. The fantasy descriptions are the whole reason I love
The saddest bit about the acotar series, especially the new one is - Nesta had a great potential to becoming a full-on, proper unhinged villain. Like... Why do we need another redemption arc? Why couldn't she just stay a mess (honestly, same)? Why couldn't she lose it once her sister dies, not knowing that her fate was already decided and everyone was aware what's gonna happen? She has powers, her toy teaches her how to fight, she's obviously bitter about what happened to her, has a boatload of unresolved issues. Just because you're a villain doesn't mean you can't get dicked down proper. Hell, I say her being evil could actually make sex scenes 1. More varied and 2. Much more entertaining. So much lost potential just cause we had to endure sjms breeding kink and inability to emphasize without repetition, smh
What I would have written in Acosf: Nesta becomes the villain and doesn't have a redemption arc cause like wtf lets maybe make at least one of the characters not two dimensional. But like she stills ends up with Cassian, and they kind of run off together and become the anit-heroes. Instead of the book just being a copy and paste of weird scenes of Nesta getting dicked down, she could've spent the time messing with cassians head. It could've been 800 pages of psychological warfare where she convinces him to betray his brothers, and run off with her. Instead of her learning how to walk down stairs you could have her manipulating him because she knows that he is attracted to her. Literal hate sex, cause we both know that would be better than them boning all over the dinner table. Lesbehonest the idea of them flying away cackling into the distance is way more interesting than Feminist Icon Rhysand not telling his wife that they're weird bat baby is going to kill her and then at the end she manages to defeat this huge villain in like twenty pages because the rest of is just poorly written smut. Like screw Feyre, and Rhys they're such a toxic couple. Them having a collective breakdown because they had sex while she was an Illyrian cos our feminist overlord has a bat kink is literally so boring. I wanna see Nesta get so overpowered that she becomes the real villain and cassian is just her hench man who she OCCASIONALY screws (I do not need 50 sex scenes just so I can fully grasp how long cassians dick is). I think it would be way more emotional if Feyre had to fight her sister and cassian his brothers, instead we got a repetitive, way too long smut fest. Thank you
@@evie_33 I know this comment is super old but bless you for writing such a better novel its a shame its buried in these comments WHEWwww I do remember being *so* pissed at all of the main characters because NESTA WAS RIGHT!!! I'm going to retcon my own memory so that I read a story thats the version you wrote instead lmaooo
I forgot about ACOSF, lmao. I can't believe Cindy has to talk about Sarah J. Maas' legacy one more time, I'm so sorry. Edit: You know what, she got one last rant to vent her feelings towards the book. And to that I say, good for her.
this is the first time i’m hearing about this it got canceled???????? i’m so angry they renewed emily in paris but not julie and the phantoms i’m going to scream
the talking to strangers one makes me so angry because brock turner literally combated chanel miller's advocacy for awareness of rape in the college setting by campaigning that college drinking culture is the problem, not the fact that grown men cannot control the urge to attack women. he tried to diminish chanel's experience by saying that alcohol was the problem, not the fact that he literally raped someone and according to court articles "remembered the entire thing" well enough to use his memory of the night as a key piece of his defense.
Talking to Strangers sounds like a banned book that should actually be banned. It sounds so dangerous if the wrong people read it. "It wasn't even problematic in a fun way" ah jeez, I just realised why I love twitter drama so much.... thanks Cindy... Maas needs an editor with balls 😭
Thank god I didn’t read the last book of the series. I don’t like Nesta, she’s a bitch and her story didn’t appeal to me at all. A story I would’ve loved to read was Elain’s (and hopefully turn her sad story into a villains arc)… nesta was bitter even way before she was turned. Elain was not.
@@loladexploradora5567 then maybe you will enjoy Elain's story once it comes out. I'm hoping for a villain arc too! I actually liked Nesta even though se was bitter and stand-offish, but i didn't enjoy her story of healing because it mostly came down to her just needing a man to encourage her and her family forcing her to "just get better"... really thought SJM could've done something different
I had so much hope Az would be a decent male (because he was probably the blankest slate among them thus allowing me to project a decent male lead onto his persona) but ofc SJM made his mind a carbon copy of the smex-obsessed male leads she makes. Depression and BJs indeed. Like do these men not have lives outside their beds and women (I'm sorry; mates? Females?) and fighting? HOW are they horny basically 24/7??
The worst book I read this year was for SCHOOL 💀 I had to read the Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard and I’m looking into my legal options because it took years off my life
YES FINALLY!!! I find another person who didn't like that book....I read the whole series and it was a mistake 😭 idk why my school was pushing it so hard.
I'm so sorry. I didn't _hate_ it myself. Maybe I found it boring? But at one point, I liked it a little more than The Hunger Games and then I couldn't bring myself to finish the last book because at that point, I just _didn't care_ at all. Main girl was dumb and wishy washy the whole time, main guy was eh meh blander than water, and Evangeline and Maven were the only ones who were slightly interesting.
I think I fell for Cindy all over again hearing her drag talking to strangers, gosh so eloquent and insightful and intelligent, you always amaze me, I want to be you when I grow up mom (me, a 25 yo child)
Does any else thinks that after the first book of ACOTAR, it seems like Sarah J. Mas started writing a fanfiction of the first book? We have a story where the original love interest suddenly turned out to be evil and abusive causing the female lead to runs into the arms of the previous antagonist who is also suddenly become good and "feminist" who is supportive with no mention of his previous misdeeds. The best comparision is a Harry Potter fanfiction where Ron is written as evil and abusive causing Hermione to turn to Draco who suddenly become nice and supportive even though he's always been racist to her.
Honestly just based on your review, I wonder how 'Talking to strangers' got to be written AND pusblished. What was the thought process? 'Guys... Rapists, murderers and dictators are not bad people. They're just friends you haven't talk to yet' 🙃
“i know which video people are going to click on, and it’s this one.” that’s kind of sad, tbh. i love watching people talk about their favourite books. even if i don’t necessarily agree, it makes me happy to see them happy. i suppose people find it more entertaining to see you rant though lol
Seeing her happy about books used to make me want to read more and was inspiring but now I'm depressed so it makes me miss the good parts. At least for myself it's not that I find it more entertaining it's that at least those videos don't give me existential crisis about the state of my own life.
Rhysand's so woke that he actually created a different kind of feminism that we just haven't had the choice to understand yet as the simple creatures we are... but I talked to him and he's willing to let us make that CHOICE (cuz that's what it is... OUR CHOICE) 😌💪🏻🤝
wait I'm sorry are we just going to brush over the court of thorns and roses series getting a hulu adaptation. please can we talk about this. is hulu making porn? is that what I'm seeing?
this cannot be true. i will not believe it. maybe if we can make enough of a stink about it, we can prevent it like how sonic fans got the hedgehog redesigned after the trailers were made
Whenever I feel bad about my own writing, I come back to your videos slandering Sarah J. Maas and I'm suddenly hit with the realization that if she could do it, I have to do it better
Im glad I've never read any SJM book. I tend to keep it that way, but a beloved friend of mine loves her series. But she's acknowledged how bad it is. We all have problematic favs at the end of the day lmfao
I was present during the two-part premiere of ACOSF and I _know_ it was badly written but I'm tempted to say it was a masterpiece to see what trouble comes to find me.
You know the worst thing about SJM to me isn’t even her books lacking some plot and all that, it’s the fact that every newest book gets smuttier and smuttier to the point where she’s just writing fan fiction about her own characters. I can get over the plot and the predictability but nah I’m sick of the smut which really doesn’t fit the vibe of the book. Like in what world is two characters having you know what in the middle of A DYING CAMP a good idea? Like there’s a time and a place Sarah stop writing you and your husbands fantasies into your own books…
The fact that an author who right out said that he cared “more about story teling than facts” got to continuously publish non-fictions that could infuence thousands of people with his cherry-picked data and bullshit baffles me. Like aren’t there enough scientists who are trying to provide scientifically proven information to the public? Why is someone who is not qualified constantly given the chance to spread harmful information??
the worst book I’ve ever read this year, probably ever tbh, you would HATE it. The plot twist at the end killed something in me and I haven’t been the same since
@@sf2934 woah i read that one too!! the super obvious metaphor kept advancing slowly and i was like...this is where we're going, isn't it. One of the very few books that have given me just this blank stare of disappointment.
The only good thing about 'A Court of Silver Flames' was that it was soooooo heavy, I could drop it on my head to induce amnesia to gain back the little bit of serotonin I had 🙃 And it won an award 😭 km
Every day I genuinely contemplate rewriting silver flames just so that when I recall the contents I don’t want to cry and throw up, but then I remember that would be fan fiction and I don’t do it.
If you're accepting opinions or encouragement: I think silver flames definitely deserves to have a fanfic outdo it. Just file off those serial numbers and done. Go for it!
Lol I haven’t even read it, but never caught my attention and seeing these comments makes me even less interested. One that I continuously mention of books that I didn’t like is Crescent City (which this first book by mass that I read and last lol). Also sorry for venting
Hearing the examples for "misscomunications" in "Talking to strangers": a famouse case (for the US i assume)of a woman being arrested, a famouse case of a woman being raped, Adolf Hitler. Dafuq? Edit: I'm from Germany
So... The Hawthorne Legacy is basically a reverse harem? Sounds like one of those stories from back when Quizilla was still around about a girl living with several hot supernatural guys:"You're living with a werewolf, a vampire, an angel, a demon and a centaur"(spoiler alert: nobody ever ended up with the centaur XD) /This is what a feminist looks like!"(points to himself), Girl: "So...what are you going to do about it?", Guy:"Wha...I'm wearing a shirt that says 'feminist'.What else do you want?"
the phrase lukewarm problematic is so goood. 'you bitches are annoying' a whole moood! always enjoy hearing you talk about horrible books haha the last book i read was the hawthorne legacy and her wishywashiness between the boys was already anooying me so i'm ready for the sequel to come in on libby so i can just roll my eyes even more lol
@@withcindy I read the sequel and just had to come and let you know bc what even was that ending lol the Hawthorne family is bonkers and I was legit stressed when I was like umm if you're related to these boys stop falling for them what is even happening 🙆♀️😅
