Sometimes as content creators we get comments that are tasteless and downright mean for no reason. In this case, the comments are targeted toward 4c hair - my hair type. Each comment in today's video represents a litany of comments just like it that I've received over the years. I've decided to highlight them and talk about them out in the open. Side note: I'm really making this video to highlight the less glamorous side of being an "influencer.” Many of us take a lot of negativity in and are expected to take the hits with a smile because "we put ourselves out there." No. I don't care about differing opinions, as you'll see in the video, but I do want to point out some of the toxicity that's in the community and why so many people get turned off by it. I've been doing this for 11+ years and I've learned to roll with the punches, but that doesn't mean I have to smile and say nothing at all. Content creators are people and just like the people in the comments, we should be addressed respectfully.

I feel like as well it's not just a small insult rather if you can easily say something bad about somone's hair online, then you are bold enough to do in real life and there are bigger consequences. The thing is that natural hair isn't just personal, but the concept of it is bigger than all of us, so these insults really do matter

I used to think that the best way to style my hair was to press it. I got a relaxer at age 7 because my mom just didn’t know. I do still get my hair pressed but I love my 4b/4c hair, embrace the curl pattern, length, density and all of my hair and love to watch and learn each day about it. I wish someone would…

@@bandaqueenlove9134 Yes, on a large scale they do because of the umbrella of white supremacy. It’s not just about having “ugly hair”, it’s about the domino effect it creates in “justifying” why black people as a whole don’t deserve respect and equality. The comments that get directed at me personally - I don’t care. I’ve got tough skin. 😉

Why do Americans call black hair or 4C hair "nappy hair"? I don't like it. It sounds inappropriate and insulting. I think the black community all over the world need to learn to love their hair. @Rosa M sooo lucky. They had to pass a law here in the US so we won't get fired (yes fired) for wearing our hair in it natural state. It only passed in 13/50 states sadly. It's a HUGE problem here, but it manageable depending where you live.

@Rosa M interesting. The weave industry is big back home . When I was young and living back home, folks did not wear their hair natural and it was considered “undone”. I’ve seen the trend towards natural hair grow which is beautiful . Perhaps things are drastically better now and in your area- which is great. I def think African women can style their hair with less issues (ie braids, cornrows , weaves , etc) BUT I still see large Eurocentric pull when it comes to hair

One of the things we have to do is remove everyone else's eyes when we look in the mirror! Growing up and being teased about my hair caused me to hate my hair and hide it. Once I realized that my hair was given to me by the Most High for the express purpose of representing my beautiful people, I learned to embrace it. I hate it when people dangle the “growth” carrot to prove a point or as click bait. You are right, hair will grow at it’s own rate. I’ve always had anxiety about going to the hair stylist. I stopped going there at age 15, way before I went natural. They would complain about how much hair I’ve got and how hard it was to relax and get straight. I got tired of having to explain and defend my hair to the same stylist who should have been familiar with my hair by then. I only go when I’m platting my hair but now the anxiety has come back as my hair is longer. It was already a battle for stylist when it was a short afro. So I’m sticking to styles that I can do myself to get away from the comments and complaints

I was relaxed for years until I got burned so badly I couldn't lie down. At that point, I was done. Looking at videos with other hair textures does make you wonder what's wrong with your hair when you go natural - why isn't it curling? But the positive representation that you bring to 4C hair is great. The joy you take in your hair is infectious! I actually enjoy doing my hair now. But I know everyone is not going to feel that way.

Also re: anime pics I think generally not showing your face/connecting identity can increase willingness to be nasty and rude. Not always the case, some people have no problem doing that with their identity attached. Anyway, it's part of the reason I put a selfie up! I thought it would probably be a little less unnerving if an actual face was attached to a comment but that's likely not necessarily true haha. It feels a lil more personable on here though.

@apara2005 3 года назад
Two things.. 1. I would say, don't always believe what you see on TV (for our case. RU-vid). Most of those "curls" you see on that type 4 hair are created by twist or braid outs and products. I realized that when I was wondering why my hair didn't look like other youtubers who claim to have the same hair as me. Some youtubers edit the hell out of their videos. Only showing the desirable parts that will get views. 2. Looser hair isn't as glam as one thinks. Everyone make it seems like it so easy, it's not. I have 4a hair and my curl pattern and twist out won't last without putting gel, which I refuse to do, because the looser the hair the more it expands and frizz in humidity and rain. I actually laughed at that winter comment because that's when my hair behaves the best 🤣🤣🤣. I LOVE wearing my hair in afros but I have to really have my hair shaped (cut) to achieve the perfect afro or it will be flat and look like a mullet. I also have to pat it down so it looks shrunken. If not it looks like a bird's nest 🙃. I'm not saying all of this to say I hate my hair, I love my hair, just saying it's not as easy as those video make it looks. I watch a type 3 video once and was surprised by their struggle!!! You just don't step out of the shower with perfect hair because it's loose. It takes lots of work, but some of these videos don't show the crazy amount of it. Just cuts to the beautiful "Effortless" coils/curls. My point, grass is always greener. There's pros and cons for every type. Like latoya said everyone wishes for what they don't have. Please love your 4C hair it truly gorgeous!!!!

So I learned and came to love my 4c hair, and then one day I was accompanying a relative of mine to the salon and she just up and said I should also relax my also, and kept making these comments about don't I wanna see how long is my hair now, don't I miss my relax hair or imagine how many guys would approach me if only I had my hair relaxed. I felt sorry for her hey, cos now she's complaining about her thin hair but is refusing to start fresh. Sad how we still in the mindset that relaxed hair is the best hair.

You’re so right about the grass is greener on the other side. I have 3a/3b hair, and I get jealous of 4c because I cannot do a thick high-puff. I also cannot wear twists for more than one day or it becomes really fuzzy. However, I do what works for my natural hair because I cannot trade it in for 4c, and I will not trade it in for anything unnatural. I spend a lot of time trying to talk friends into embracing what’s coming out if their scalps. It’s very difficult. Most people are set in their opinions and don’t want to hear anything. I call my hair coily hair, as that's what I see.. A strand of bone straight hair, i say it looks straight, when I see my hair, it grows out forming circles on top of itself like the keychain coils, which stretches out into curls, waves, straight with heat, or afro when fluffed/ combed out. Simply coils. It is beautiful, and especially plush and soft, with a pleasant sheen when well moisturized/ hydrated -- the ultimate dilemma-, pleasurable to touch. It is a learning curve to understand how to nurture and care for my hair just like a plant . I agree on a personal level, but I think it’s a little more nuanced. Blackness has been weaponized against us so much. By society making fun or looking down on things like hair in many ways it justifies unfair treatment in the eyes of many. Just look at the media coverage on something horrible that happens. It’s always more tragic when the person is “beautiful”. If blackness is ugly, they don’t have to work as hard to fix the unfair treatment of us… But yes. I don’t accept it either. Just words to me when it comes in this form. It’s not that serious on the surface…but when we dig a little deeper…

If you've NEVER had to manage it yourself and only know it straight (albiet damaged, broken off, heat and chemical damaged, BUT straight) the anxiety of handling 4c hair is real. And we have been taught to hate it. By society but mostly from our close circles (grandma, moms, best friends, relatives etc) telling us our natural hair is hard to deal with and natural hair is "nappy," and doesn't look well "groomed." It takes understanding 4c hair and learning styling and natural hair care to be ABLE to appreciate it. Your videos do that. Don't give up on (previously ignorant) peeps like me. That woman was bitterly crying out for help...but she was still 👀 you!! 🤗😇😁😘💕

Following now! I love your positive message. Thank you for representing us 4c’s! I’m 48 and I am just learning to love my hair. I got to this place in life because of women like you. Not only did I learn to accept my hair, I learned to love all that makes me Black. I feel like a part of me equated my hair hatred to self hatred. Unless I was relaxed or jerry curled back in the day, I felt ugly. Thanks for your assistance in bringing out the real me!

I went natural back in 2006 and at the time I knew no one whose hair looked like mine. I love seeing more channels popping up with hair like mine. It's weird that the things some people hate about "4c" hair are the properties that make it so unique and versatile. I love my hair, and I wouldn't want to change it in any way. Concerning the anime avatars: I think people just use them for the sake of anonymity. I've been a fan of anime and manga all my life, and none of the characters look like me. They don't really look like any real human. I'm sure there are some out there that are obsessed with that look, but it's more of a psychological issue than anything else.

Oh so you’re a REAL OG in the natural hair space. I love it!! Great insight on the anime thing. I think the character are cute. I only know one individual growing up who was obsessed to the point of hating themselves for not looking like the characters they loved. It’s definitely a case by case basis.

When I moved to Australia to study in Year 8, I was around a lot of white kids, my best friend was white and all my teachers were white, there was only a small population of kids from my home country that went to the same school and I used to compare my hair texture to not only the white kids, but also my friends from where I'm from, because a lot of the girls would relax (chemically straighten) because it was more manageable. And there was this one girl, who's white, she would always be intrigued by my hair, and touch it without asking. When I would wear my hair in a bun, she'd squeeze it and say "it's so cute". And I was too nice to tell her to stop, but it would make me feel insecure about my hair. But I also got to meet other Australians, The Torress Straight Islanders and they had similar jair textures, some were more 4c, other 3b or so but I felt connected to them because we were in the same boat practically. So when I start to feel down about my hair, i always remind myself that I'm proud to have that is so diverse and complex and unique

….Sorry you’re going through this. Maybe try to communicate to these people what you don’t want them to do/say. It’s takes courage to stand up for what you want if you fear it will ruffle some feathers, but in a way it’s an act of kindness to both parties. You will feel better over time and you give them the opportunity to acknowledge that something they are doing is hurting you. They may not have realized it and will stop. I hope this helps. ❤️

I agree with you, representation really matters. I have low-to-medium density, fine 4A hair and I am hard-pressed to find influencers with 4A and particularly, low density hair. In fact, finding 4A hair videos is a challenge as many of the video results from my searches are really influencers with 3C/4A hair. I only have Naptural85, Naturalreign, Isimeme and Hazel Godesss in the 4A hair category who I follow and our hair densities differ so although curl definition may be similar I can never replicate their wash and go, braid out or twist out results in terms of volume and that is something I had to grow to accept. I refer to 4A hair as the frequently overlooked Type 4 hair as Type 4 hair conversations typically focus on 4B/4C hair.
@LaToyaEbonyHair
@LaToyaEbonyHair 3 года назад
Have you ever thought about creating your own content online? I think naturals with 4a low density are probably making content, but just aren’t as visible. Being 100 percent honest, people with high density tend to be more popular in social media. People are interesting…we SAY we want more representation, but only support the same kinds of people. It apparent in the views and likes on these platforms. It’s frustrating. I think maybe think about creating your own space on the internet…also check our forums. I saw so many different kinds of people. Way more diversity!
@miniminott48

@@LaToyaEbonyHair You are correct. People love to see high density hair. I don't have the inclination to create content on social media and I have accepted my hair. You, Jenn J, NappyFu, etc. have promoted hair acceptance and have winning personalities. That is why I feel privileged to be subscribed to your channels. Also, I love shrinkage because it gives my hair the appearance of volume. I tend to stay clear of stretched styles so wash and go is my go-to style.

I support people who try to persuade others to embrace their natural hair in a respectful way and respect the choice of those who don't want to. A lot of it is about corrective reinforcement. It wouldn't be necessary to elevate natural hair so much if everything was already neutral. As long as that Tiktok sound "but I don't wanna be black, I wanna be white" is being used in serious ways, we will need to raise our voices above it. In all aspects, but especially when it comes to hair. I want our future generations to be black af and proud of it because we are beautiful.

Girl! Where are the lies??? The unrecognized self-hate is really sad, and I mean that sincerely. I was so nervous to go officially natural last year, but I am THRILLED that I did. I don't meet many other naturals, but I'm hoping to break barriers with my 2, 4b and 4c, daughters. If you like texturizers, wigs and weaves, fine, BUT....we have to be honest with ourselves regarding the true reasons we don't wear our 4c hair proudly and unapologetically. You are just so beautiful, from the inside out, and I appreciate you representing us 4c ladies so well.

To be honest growing up in the Caribbean 4c hair when short knotty we called picky hair. Or bad hair. So we grow up thinking when your hair is 3b it is nice/good hair. Thank God now we learn how to take better care of our 4c hair. And alot of us are loving our hair more. Atleast me. Our hair are special we can do so much styles with our hair which is amazing. Alot of people are trying for their hair to come like ours. It is just a bad mindset and we need to get out of it. I love to see long 4c hair and the nicest challenge if you can get it to a length that you desire. Watching the movie good hair inspired me to go natural and STOP relaxing my hair. Also watching RU-vid videos also is a great help.

My view on negative opinions is this: they don’t pay for my maintenance so they don’t count either way! If you love your hair, love it! This is all a learning process and a journey. Wear your fros, twist outs, braid outs, wigs, weaves, locs, whatever makes you happy. Family used to comment on my hair until I got my first press in 5 1/2 years and it’s nearly bra strap after the trim. 4c is versatile! Maybe now that I’ve gotten my hair properly attended to, maybe it’ll react better to braid outs and twist outs!

We label ourselves as a bit offbeat and quirky, but we love it. Sure, not all are like that, but a large portion are - and are proud of it. But you’re right, liking anime and being rude don’t correlate. I’m sharing a consistency I’ve noticed for years and thousands of comments on my channel. It triggered you, so I get why you responded that way, but it was framed as an observation, not an end all be all.
