In the 4th quarter of a 1988 NFL game between the Green Bay Packers and Washington Redskins, with 10 seconds left, Packers kicker Max Zendejas shanked a chip shot field goal so badly that not only did he cost his team the game, but he was cut immediately afterwards. This is the story behind what might be the worst kick in the over 100-year history of the Packers franchise

Zendejas was my Dad’s friend. People don’t understand the extremely harsh winds that these kickers are having to kick against. My dad was the punter and explained that to me. He’s number 17, the player holding the ball for Zendejas. He punted for 9 seasons. ☺️ I do love watching this though just for the footage I can see of my dad.

Del Greco missed about one in three field goals he attempted as a Packer. He hit at an almost 80 percent clip the rest of his career. I remember it wasn't a terribly big disappointment when the Packers let him go. Credit to him for figuring out what he needed to do to be better, although he did it elsewhere. Also, if I recall correctly, he was a pretty good golfer, so maybe playing in Phoenix and Houston where you can golf year-round helped in him in some weird way.

First time I ever saw this FG attempt. All I know about this was at the time, super-popular Chicago morning drive disc jockey Jonathon Brandmeier (WLUP-FM 97.9) mercilessly mocked Max Zendejas on the air for quite some time. If I remember correctly, it ended with Zendejas taking the ribbing in stride and getting to chat with Brandmeier on the air.

This kick was awful, but I can say some good things about it: 1. At least the sequence of plays leading up to the field goal was sound. 2. At least the kicker was in the right mindset to kick a field goal. 3. At least there were 11 men who understood what they were supposed to do. That is to say in 1999, in a game between the eagles and bucs, a field goal took place that did not fit those criteria. Official Jaguar Gator 9 has made a video about the play.

Great video! May I suggest another one: the meteoric crash & burn of Ian Howfield, who was cut by the Houston Oilers the day after missing a 33-yard pitch-&-putt FG attempt that would have beaten Waahington on Nov 2, 1991. Washington was undefeated at the time & did everything but giftwrap the game. Howfield's 33-yard attempt would have given the Oilers the victory with 1 second left in regulation. Washingon won in OT 16-13. Despite making practice squads in both Philly & Tampa, he never played another down in the NFL. Howfield was the son of former English soccer star & NFL placekicker Bobby Howfield (Broncos & Jets).

Worth mentioning since it is about the 1988 Packers. The 1988 Packers were involved in a week 15 game against the Minnesota Vikings that changed NFL history. The 2-12 Packers upset the 10-4 Vikings. The Packers win cost them the no. 1 pick which the Cowboys got and used to get Troy Aikman, the Vikings loss cost them the no. 1 seed (which went instead to the Bears allowing them to host what became known as the Fog Bowl)

You could hear on the radio broadcast Washington’s assistants taunting their former kicker. I believe CBS’s NFL Today played their broadcast the next week. You mention that Max was drafted by the Cowboys. His brother Luis would sign with Dallas in 1989, and play a key role in the “Bounty Bowl” between the Cowboys and Eagles that year.
@levikatriel

Speaking of a bounty bowl (Unofficial JG9 historian), in 1988, the bengals coach payed 5 dollars to his receivers when they made blocks that knock players off balance. There was some controversy about if that was part of what was outlawed in bounty bowl. Official Jaguar Gator 9 has made a video about that strategy.

“From the Packers’ perspective, it’s hard to do a whole lot worse than this.” Funny thing is, they DID do worse than this. After cutting Zendejas, the Packers went through Dale Dawson, Dean Dorsey, and Curtis Burrow (while getting shut out three times in a five-game stretch, including twice back-to-back). Each was worse than the last. Fun trivia: The Packers’ 1988 season finale was Curtis Burrow’s only NFL appearance (0/1 FG, 2/4 XP). He was also the last Packer to wear #5 in a regular season game.

However, the Packers would make a move in the 1989 draft that started what is now a 32 years and counting run of complete stability in taking Chris Jacke. He would be followed by Ryan Longwell who would be followed by Mason Crosby, arguably the 3 greatest kickers in Packers history.
@markgraham2312
@markgraham2312 Год назад
I don't agree with any of these four criteria. 1) The kick must miss the net. A 25-yard field goal that misses, but hits the net, costs the game when down by less than 3, and gets the kicker fired is not as bad as a 40-yard field goal that misses the next. We are talking about a bad kick. That's the only criterion. A kick that doesn't get off the ground and hits the center in his cleats is a bad, bad kick. 2) It must have no chance of being good, That's 0%. Not 1%, or 0.5%, or 0.00000003%. It must be 0%. Well, that kick by Zendajas was pretty bad. But it hit the net. Also, it wasn't a shank, it was a hook. As Steve Young has said: "You can miss the kick, but you can't miss the net."

After this, the Packers tried Dean Dorsey, Dale Dawson, and Curtis Burrow at K for the rest of 1988. Incredibly enough, Zendejas was probably the best kicker of these 4. Curtis Burrow, whose NFL career consisted of the final game of the 1988 season, also has the distinction of being the last Packer to wear #5--for some reason, Paul Hornung's number has never been officially retired and was put back into circulation in the late '80s for a few players, none of whom were with the team for long.

I remember watching that game when I was 12 years old. I couldn't believe he hooked that kick and I was glad he was cut. But to be fair, the guys who replaced him that season (Dale Dawson, Dean Dorsey, Curtis Barrow) also sucked. That's why they drafted Chris Jacke the next year. They have had remarkable consistency with the kicking game ever since because they have used only four (and Dave Rayner was there for only one season in 2006 but he had a great year). It's been Chris Jacke, Ryan Longwell and Mason Crosby.

Worst kick in Packers history? Maybe, can't think of another one. Worst kick in NFL history? No, but mostly because I disagree with your criteria. I don't think one kick will ever cost a kicker their job, as with this guy wasn't hitting everything before this kick. Also, I think someone who never misses, missing a kick on a big stage is worse. The 2 worst I can think of is Gary Anderson missing the kick against the Falcons that could have sent Minnesota to Superbowl XXXII and Mike Vanderjagt's miss in the 2006 Divisional Playoffs against Pittsburgh. Those guys rarely missed, so them missing in those spots felt worse. The Superbowl XXV kick that could have helped Buffalo win a title is probably 3rd, but that was a long kick, just extremely heartbreaking, maybe moreso in hindsight.

Even I can make that... when I said that under 40 I was right but I was a kicker when I played football and excelled at soccer. It sucked to watch my Redskins as a 12 year old with such a crappy kicker when I myself could kick better than Zendajas at age 12. I remember this entire drama, although this is my first time seeing it because this game was only available on the radio where I lived and I choose to listen to it. There was some real anger between Redskins fans and Zendajas, not Just max but his entire family... they had like 10 sons who were all kickers. Tony Zendajas was the only NFL caliber of these kickers and he played for the Rams I believe. We even hated him. I have never seen this much hate over a kicker. but we hated their family. I assume the players hated him too, so much one player was on the ground kicking and laughing after the miss. I had not seen that before. so thanks for covering this. I do remember this game vividly, even the radio announcers were talking about the feud between the Redskins and the entire Zendajas family. For him to lose his job after failing to beat the Redskins he must have been disowned by his family... so that explains the Redskin player kicking and laughing on the ground... this was a big feud and likely the only bright spot for the Redskins that year as it was the only losing season in the first Joe Gibbs era.
