16:41 Ian wasn't actually right in this clip. RPG-7 has an arming distance of 5 meters. Meaning, even with a safety cap removed it will become a live explosive only after travelling 5 meters after the initial launch. Safety cap is there more so that you don't damage the primer prematurely.

Some rpgs can be set off because they don’t have an arm distance though
@burningsinner1132
@burningsinner1132 Год назад
Wrong. The 5 meters is the distance where rocket engine engages and fins pop up. Primer activates, but its 98% fizzle unless the grenade travels 25 meters (It's actually speed based, so add ± 1 meter for weather conditions, initial powder motor condition and build precision). There are also two classes of grenades with VERY different weight. The oldies are 2-2.6kg and use one type of powder charge. The latter versions (Different tandem/thermobaric configurations) utilize heavier charge since they weight 4.5kg. Shooting the grenade with the wrong charge will most likely result in malfunction. For heavy grenade with light charge, you typically see the first head in the tandem going off, but primary charge fizzles. Thermobarics can go off, but minimal range increases (Rocket engine needs to build speed sufficient to trigger the fuse). If it fails, the head typically splashes and the liquid explosives spill. SHIT IS TOXIC, DON'T BREATHE IT IN. Ignite it from safe distance, let it burn. For light grenade with heavy charge, you typically see delayed detonation. Warhead get squished and detonates in suboptimal configuration, resulting in HEAT warhead acting more like HE one. In Ukraine war, light grenades sometimes seen with either extinguishers (Filled with extra thermite) or extra grenades (Be it hand grenades, underbarrel grenades or even submunitions from cluster shells) taped on to compensate for disrepancies and to make the scope useful again for precise shots.

23:07 It was later found out that it was the ammunition he was using that was the problem. In the video specifically, he noted that his shots were going off target than expected, not knowing he was using ammunition that was too powerful for his rifle. I guess the proper safety lesson from that incident would be to STOP what you're doing if an expected result does not happen, and try to find what is going wrong.

Yeah SLAP rounds are no joke, shooting a SLAP round is basically like rolling the dice when you shoot it from your .50bmg rifle, you pray it shoots forward and not backwards, although it would have helped if he used a semi-auto though especially when shooting those extra spicy .50bmg rounds, those things create too much pressure for a breech loading single shot rifle like the RN-50, like Brandon said when you have a semi-auto action with buffer tubes and springs it can help mitigate the force and pressure from the round so that at least it doesn't completely shoots your brain out

I ran across this in the weirdest way this week. Cataclysm is a roguelike tile video game, a lot like Dwarf Fortress - It has guns. A Remington .223 wouldn't accept my Nato 5.56 "AR-15 Bullet" - I was like "Huh, why? It's in a STANAG-mag." On further inspection: Haha, no. .223 is a weaker round. _My Cataclysm character knew it was a bad idea when I didn't!_ Still, in a few updates, I hope you can load overpowered ammo, and the game dicerolls the expected consequences :D
@bruhbruh1606
@bruhbruh1606 2 года назад
@@JoshSweetvale also ontop of that, 5.56 cartridge is just a smidge longer than .223. I'm talkin theyre so close you'd have to put em together and look hard to see the difference in length, but it's enough so that you cant properly load 5.56 in a gun chambered in .223, but you can load & shoot .223 out of a gun chambered for 5.56

If I remember correctly from that video, it wasn't that the ammo was too powerful for the rifle, it's that the ammo was overloaded and had been tampered with before he received it. Average .50BMG is 55,000 PSI and the round he fired was found to have produced at least 85,000 PSI. The round shouldn't have been shot from any rifle, not specifically the RN-50.

If you watch the slow-mo at 21:30 again, you'll notice fire coming out not just the side but also the bottom of the magazine. That was a round with either too much or the wrong type of gunpowder in the cartridge. The reason I believe this, is Kentucky Ballistics joined up with the SloMo Guys to do a video essentially replicating his accident with other weapons that were _purposely_ overloaded with gunpowder, and when the gun went bang in the slow motion footage they got it shows the exact same type of flames shooting out the side of the gun and then the bottom of the magazine as the explosion takes the path of least resistance (and with gun magazines being plastic that's a weak spot). This gun malfunction looked pretty much _identical_ to their blowing up guns in slow motion weapon.
@WJS774
@WJS774 Год назад
The blast going out the mag well doesn't really tell you anything about what caused the explosion, since that will happen regardless. Bad ammo would be my guess there too though, since the other way you get failures like that is bore obstructions, and if the round before had been a squib it wouldn't have cycled the action.

The guy from Kentucky Ballistics with the exploding rifle only made two mistakes that I can tell. One is shooting a SLAP round in a gun with a muzzle brake. A SLAP round is a smaller diameter armor piercing bullet inside a sabot (plastic sleeve) that fits the rifling, allowing you to fire a bullet of lighter weight than normal at a much higher velocity for better penetration. (Winchester did the same thing decades ago with the Accelerator rounds firing a .22 bullet in a .30 sabot from .30-30, .308 and .30-06). You aren't supposed to use them with a muzzle brake because the holes in the brake could separate the sabot from the bullet and potentially leave a barrel blockage. His second mistake is using reloads made by someone else. That is putting your health and safety in the hands of someone who might have been watching TV, arguing with his wife, or just ignoring published limits while assembling what is essentially a tiny pipe bomb. When reloading ammunition, the loader is the only quality control. People can get badly hurt if that person isn't concentrating.

When it comes to Scott's .50 cal explosion the only real lesson to take away is be careful when buying old ammo off the internet, especially when it's something as powerful as .50 bmg. The ammo scott was shooting was called SLAP rounds and it's something that was tested by the marines in the 70s. While Scott was under the impression that it was legit military surplus ammo in reality there's really no telling what condition that ammo was stored it, whos hands that ammo had passed between, or rather it had been tampered with or reloaded. Messing with ammo like that is something that alot of people in the gun community could probably be more careful about.

With him, and it had a red dot sight on a Weaver mount (this is important). Kids have shown up for the next session starting in 20 minutes or so and we were waiting for a few more. I fire my buddy's pistol and a round ejects, hit the mount, and the brass gets stuck on my lip. Cannot say any of the words coming to my mind, nor do I want to scare the children by reacting to the searing pain on my lip. I set the weapon down carefully, I spit the brass out, and play it off. The kids bought that I was not hurt, and everything is fine. In reality, it looked as though I had been stung in the lip by a wasp for about an hour. Fun fact: at that same range I WAS stung by either a hornet or wasp while giving instructions for an archery class, less successful in playing off the injury. Loud yell, loss of dexterity.

Kentucky Ballistics was using an extremely safe rifle but the ammo was suspect. That kind of ammo (.50 BMG SLAP(Sabot Light Armor Penetrating)) is not "illegal" but no one outside of military ammo manufacturers makes it. It's very scarce on the surplus market. It's designed for .50 BMG machineguns and anti-material rifles to take out lightly armored vehicles like trucks and APC's. It's a .30 caliber bullet made of tungsten, an extremely hard metal, in a plastic sleeve called a "sabot" (french for shoe). The round is loaded like a regular .50 BMG, but with a bullet a fraction of the weight, so it goes VERY FAST and cuts through a lightly armored APC like a hot knife through butter. Mark Serbu and a RU-vidr names Royal Nonesuch designed the rifle. Serbu has been making .50 BMG rifles for decades and he's a well accomplished engineer and manufacture. He literally had to load a .50 BMG cartridge with c-4 explosives to replicate what happened with Kentucky Ballistics. They think it was a combo of things. An overcharged round and maybe some debris in the bore from the bootleg sabot round, which acted like a bore obstruction, which will blow up a gun.

That’s a main reason I never go to a shooting range, I don’t trust anyone that I don’t know to be around me with a loaded firearm.

have never shot a bolt actionn higher than .22, but semi auto I fired 5.56. both times as part of uk army cadets. as a kid, I knew what a lot of the people in these clips seem to have forgotten, that while guns can be fun and safe when used correctly (following all the range rules), if you ignore or forget those rules and do something wrong then you are essentially holding a hand grenade 2" from your nose... interesting story as a side note, my grandad was a yorkshire ranger in his younger years (as well as a volunteer member of yorkshire cave and mountain rescue), he refused to play paintball with us when I was 17. at the end of the day, while we were packing stuff away, I asked him why he didnt wanna join in. he looked me dead in the eyes and said "I dont point a gun at anything I am not planning to eat afterwards". I got my respect for firearms and their safe use from that man. sorry for the rambling, I hope I didnt bore anyone. rest in piece grandad

The incident with Polish soldier could be a rare example of a true "accidental discharge" (gun fires without the user's intention, NOT due to negligence) instead of a "negligent discharge" (user negligence causes the gun to fire, e.g. finger in the trigger guard). The basic AK pattern rifle has a free-floating firing pin so it's free to move back and forth in the bolt, unlike an AR-15 which has a spring that keeps the firing pin rearward until struck by the hammer. So when pulling and letting the bolt go on an AK, the bolt slams forward and inertia causes the firing pin to continue forward. Combine that with out of spec ammunition/primer and you got yourself an AD. It's a very rare occurrence, but notable examples are from old military surplus M1 Garands, SKS, and M1911s because (at least at the time when those guns were used) the primers were hard and wouldn't ignite easily while commercial ammo primers are softer, hence easier to ignite.

14:20 RPG is the Russian acronym. Ручной Противотанковый Гранатомёт/Ruchnoy Protivotankovy Granatomyot Is the full name of the weapon. In English it's handheld anti-tank grenade launcher. Sense ain't nobady got time for that RPG works fine for everyone.

Sorry just found your video. Growing up the first thing I was taught was muzzle control and safety. Learned all that from a young age. Some of this crap is hard to watch and makes you just scratch your head.

I had an interesting experience with hot brass. I was shooting a Kel-Tek rdb (rear-ejecting downward ejecting bullpup rifle) I was wearing a T shirt with a right front pocket. Guess where the hot brass went... My wife wanted to try it. She was wearing a light V-neck blouse. No. Just No. AFTER she changed her blouse, sure....

They really ought to teach gun safety in schools like they used to. You'll always have _some_ idiots, but a lot of these kinds of incidents would have been avoided if they had been taught the safety rules.

I deal with alot of what I would prefer to call Ignorant people at the range many people have purchased their first gun over the last 2 years and I make it point to try and educate them when they make mistakes if they refuse to listen (I've had a couple of them) then I be a jerk about it and go to the range owner I got flagged by 3 People’s muzzles one day and that was it told the range owner and I went home.

To b honest the pain of hot brass is about the same as a really hard pinch anyone with a little self discipline and respect for the dangers of weapon handling can easily endure it long enough to be safe which is why this kind of thing usually only happens when the person is inexperienced and improperly trained as any decent instructor will have warned you about this and hammered the correct reaction into you as a 16 year veteran I honestly can't remember how many times a spent casing bounced of a tree or wall into my face or down my shirt after a few it just becomes a minor irritation.

Russians actually don’t speak English. They speak Russian. There is no such thing as a rocket propelled grenade. RPG stands for something in Russian that means something like shoulder fired anti tank rocket launcher.

There's a lot of dumb people. But a lot more people are killed by cars that guns, and a lot more people defend themselves with guns than are killed by them. A LOT more. There's a reason, in point of fact there are multiple reasons, that it is not a privilege, but a right. A natural right, guarded by, but not granted by the 2nd amendment.
