THE MOST UNDERRATED JOKER

The most underrated and overlooked Joker ever put to screen.
While he's no Mark Hamill ... he's a far cry from Brent Spiner.
The Joker from Under The Red Hood , A Death In The Family , and several LEGO Batman movies voiced by veteran voice actor John DiMaggio deserves his roses and by god, we're gonna give it to him!

I think John DiMaggio does the "Killing Joke" better than Mark Hamill because of how cold and scary it sounds when he tells it.
@vanndymaywho1910
@vanndymaywho1910 7 месяцев назад
He also sounds excited to an extent when retelling the joke, compared that with the gruesome images of Barbara having been shot by the Joker flash on screen as Jason recalls when he first heard that asylum joke having read it in Batman’s notes word for word… it’s just an unsettling moment, and the most notable reaction Joker gets from it (aside from Jason killing him) is a waitress going “meh” after hearing it. Leaving Joker disappointed… also him smiling his trademark grin without the white skin and red lips is a whole another level of unsettling.

I always liked how everyone acted around this Joker. You can really tell time has passed in this version of Gotham and that everyone knows that the Joker is a big deal and no good. Black Mask breaks Joker out of prison not just cause he's desperate but also because Joker's reputation means something. Barely anyone is brave enough to confront him and those that do like Batman are extremely cautious. Joker is Gotham's apex predator in this

While I love Mark Hamill as Joker I gotta admit my two personal favorites are John DiMaggio and Kevin Michael Richardson, both criminally underrated Jokers. When ever I read the comics I hear John DiMaggio’s voice every time and also I’d love to see a live action interpretation of the Kevin Michael Richardson one since it would be creepy and unlike any interpretation we’ve ever seen.

This was the first Joker I saw that made me think "this looks like a guy who may actually stand a chance against Batman in a hand to hand fight." He just didn't look as emaciated as he usually does. Those broad shoulders, thick neck, and yeah, that raspy voice all added to this dangerous looking Joker. It shows that he doesn't only need psychological tactics to get his way. He has the ability to use force if he needs to.

John DiMaggio's voice coming out of that powerful physique makes this Joker pretty damn scary. Most incarnations are more brain than brawn but this one is both. You know what I dislike most about the Joker is that the character is indirectly responsible for the arch-nemeisis obsession. As much as I like the Joker, it does annoy me when fans get obsessed over a superhero having an arch-nemeisis that they just exspect will always show up in almost every story involving the superhero. For example, people who complain that the Shredder doesn't play a role in some of the TMNT stories.

The trope you’re looking for is “Joker Immunity”. Basically that’s where the villain is proven to be so popular that they would often make reappearances in story, even when they are supposedly killed off in story. Doctor Doom is practically a master of said trope, to the point where he actually spun off a different but related trope in the form of “Actually A Doombot”

The one from Under The Red Hood is very much The Psychotic hilarious maniac while the one from the show is the very zany and very acrobatic clown. One of the main reasons is cause 2004-2008's The Batman was the first Batman cartoon I ever watched when I was a kid, think it might've been my first real introduction to batman in general actually. Even now I still watch an episode from time to time, its underappreciated to be honest. i always loved that in DiMaggio's appearances as joker, that his joker seemed to act out of sheer boredom. killing just for killing isnt the fun part to him. its leaving a mark. he likes to see others around him destroyed by his actions. its why in death in the family he is so excited whenever he sees robin. because he understands the damage he dealt to robin and sees how far he has fallen entirely because of jokers actions. its why he attempts to kill jason in the first place; to see batman hurt. i always liked the scene where he kills masks guards. he enters the scene i feel with a genuine sense of boredom. and by the end he is exhilarated by his total dominion over mask, and that he has caused him problems for literally no reason. he enjoys doing things intentionally irredeemable and things that dont have a justification. even in the scene where he beats jason to death, he seems bored. sure hes reveling in robins pain. but it isnt enough for him. he wants to get to the punchline. "tell bats i said hello" is the perfect summary of this version of the joker. he is my favourite by far.

I think the main issue is that for the longest time, John DiMaggio wasn't listed in most people "favorite Jokers" top 3s/top5s because he had only played him in *"Under the Red Hood"* , in which he was arguably the tertiary antagonist after Red Hood & Black Mask (and I guess Ra's al Ghul was also important, voiced by the fantastic Jason Isaacs, who would make a fabulus live action Ra's... in my mind he's probably the only one who could top Alexander Siddig's portrayal of the Demon's Head in *Gotham* ) And sadly, despite being awesome, the interactive movie *"Death in the Family"* suffered from a very, very confusing promotional campaign, in which many people got suckered into buying the digital version of the film, which was just a shorter retelling of UTRH with a couple bonus scenes (Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent having a chat in a diner at the end was nice, but hardly worth the money they asked for it) And even to this day, there are still Batman fans who never realized that the physical version of that film is completely different and full of amazing new scenes. ... and you just taught me that John also voiced Joker is a couple Lego movies (I'm not a massive fan of those so I didn't know). In short, => _First issue: he hasn't played Joker enough_ The fact that he was pretty much the first "major" movie Joker after *"The Dark Knight"* (2008), just 2 years after Heath Ledger blew everyone's mind with his performance as the Joker, also didn't play in John's favor. I feel like most people just wanted more Ledger, or more Mark Hamill (the game *Arkham Asylum* came out just one year after TKD, and Joker there was very well received... but Mark is the most famous animated Joker, from *Batman:TAS* to *Justice League: Action* ) in short => _Second issue: had to compete with Ledger & Hamill /!\ pre-posting trigger warning edit: from here I don't talk about the Joker much, so you can stop reading, unless you want to read my rant about Black Mask /!\ And then there's my selfish take on UTRH, when the movie was announced I was ecstatic because my man Roman Sionis, the Black Mask, that I fell in love with thanks to Matsuda's *The Batman* (voiced by James Remar) , and who was played by John DiMaggio himself in *Batman: The Brave and the Bold* , is absolutely hilarious in *Under the Hood* (funny how the movie was such a success that in future reprinting, the name of the comic book arc would be changed to Under the Red Hood instead of simply "Under the Hood" , but hey it does ring a bit better IMHO) and even if I realize that most people enjoy Wade Williams' role as Black Mask in that movie, and I enjoy it myself, his characterization is very different from the one in the comic book arc. So even if I loved that movie, I kinda resented the extra scenes that Joker got compared to the comic book version of that story, since I felt like the extra Joker scenes took away from Black Mask's own arc... I really wanted to see him interact with Mr Freeze, Deathstroke, and even go toe-to-toe with Red Hood himself. Ironic how I had to wait for friggin' *Batwoman* season 2 to finally get a proper adaptation of _my_ Roman Sionis (played by Peter outerbridge) who is the Big Bad of the second season of that crappy show. I mean, a crappy show/season can still have some great characters & episodes here and there, and for me, that second season of *Batwoman* had some quality versions of Black Mask, Victor Zsasz, Cluemaster, and to a lesser degree, Hush (only in one episode, but he was still way better than how he was in season 1 pre-facial surgery). On the good guys side, we got out first live action Stephanie Brown, who was really good, much better than the mediocre one from *Gotham Knight* (the CW show, not the video game) and a badass cameo from John Diggle, who helps Luke Fox/Batwing take on his old comic book nemesis Russell "Menace" Tavaroff, and give him some sound advice. Wow, I really went on a wild tangent here, sorry about that (if anyone managed to read all that mess ^^') Keep up the good work, Vee!

I feel like Mark Hamill is better as the silly yet serious villain that you could see return day after day but for a sadistic psycho who cracks jokes while cracking necks, John really is the best! The darkest moments in the comics for me have his voice in my mind!

His speech to Jason Todd while Todd had a gun on him was perfect. He seemed proud of what Todd became.

We might get more John DiMaggio now since Mark Hamill is retiring his Joker (he wants to do the role with Kevin Conroy only).

100% agree! I adored this version of the Joker for standing out amongst the others and trying something new. His voice and characterisation was perfect for the story being told; dark and menacing whilst still having that unhinged Joker energy. Wish we had seen more of John DiMaggio's Joker.

Under the Red Hood, joker does not get enough love, unpopular opinion I think his version of the joker is my favorite. I'm so glad you did a video on him.

"What a Joker." Very good video and I totally share the sentiment of John DiMaggio's joker being underrated👍 No kidding my top 3 Jokers are: 1. Mark Hamill 2. John DiMaggio (Under the Red Hood) 3. Kevin Michael Richardson (The Batman, 2004 animated series) And the honorable mention goes to Troy Baker because he sounds too much like Hamill's Joker. Also the designs of the Joker in UTRH is awesome. A great work all around with the character.

A personal favorite Joker VA of mine is Anthony Ingruber. He played John/Joker in Telltales Batman. He definitely pulls inspiration from Mark Hamill, but adds his own flavor to it.
