What amuses me about ALF is that it almost feels like it was designed as the Master System's alternative to Takeshi's Challenge, even though the odds of an American programmer in the 1980's going out of his way to procure a Famicom and suffer through that game, language barrier and all, have got to be beyond astronomical.

I had the Smurfs it wasn't so bad back in the day. By then many games performed like that as the console was really old and developers were trying to make it keep up with the times
ALF is just barfy all around. There's a book about halfway through that completely restarts your game if you dare to read it. Plus they didn't even bother to give the game a professional font, making it look like some MS-DOS shareware cast-off! I'm glad Snail Maze escaped this list. It ain't much, but it's at least free!
Haha, Snail Maze will always be special to me because of the nostalgia that comes with it. I love the happy little tune it plays too and you're right... it's a free game so I can't really complain too much about it! At least the Master System version of BTTF 2 actually was based on the movie other than what we got on the NES. The closest we gotten of the Super famicom BTTF2 game.
What about that rather wretches port of Strider? It completely does away with the brisk nature of the arcade original and had a big chunk of content missing.
Great list! As bad as (I hear) ALF is, I still would like to attempt to beat it some day. I'd say Alex Kidd: High-Tech World deserves at least an "honorable mention". You should consider including it in you "MORE Worst SMS Games" video.
My dad liked Alf (the TV show) for some reason and we ended up having a stuffed Alf. The game would indeed be quite the achievement to beat. Oh, good call with Alex Kidd: High Tech World. I forget about that game... for good reason. Perhaps I'll make another list sometime about crappy SMS games but the majority of the library is just so good! ; )
Yes! Alex Kidd in Hi-Tech World is my suggestion for one of the worst - and definitely the worst one in my collection. The only other game I can suggest is Battle Out Run. I had hoped it would be something like Roadblasters, but since it involves just ramming the other cars, I find it incredibly boring and frustrating. Also, I like Marksman Shooting / Trap Shooting, haha! It’s repetitive for sure, but a nice game to have if you can still use the light phaser with a CRT tv.
Great video buddy. Yep they were some stinkers all right 😂 I do think Alf is a great collector's piece. Particularly here in the UK because it's so obscure. It looks great on my shelves anyway 😊
It's fun to critically look at some SMS games. While we love the console, not every game was perfect. I'm glad you have Alf, who wouldn't want to own such a historic piece of SMS memorabilia. Some day when I come to the UK I'm going to hit you up and we can play SMS.
My Hero has gotta be up there with some of the worst games on the platform. Alex Kidd in High Tech World is pretty bad too (but I managed to actually beat it)
My Hero was super close to being on this list. It's ridiculously hard and unfair. I will say the boss fight setting of the sunset beach is quite beautiful, but yes My Hero is a huge load of crap.
I totaly disagree about The Smurfs, the game is really good with different types of gameplay, the sled level is very fun, graphically it's very pleasant for a Master System and the difficulty is well balanced, not too hard like the Megadrive version, not too easy like Tazmania on Master System. Not the best Master System game, but not one of the worst and for sure the best version of The Smurfs.

In fairness, I have never played any of these games when i owned my master system in the 80s.However my mate lent me nightmare badketball and it really sucked.
Count yourself lucky if you haven't played these! Basketball Nightmare was good for one thing and that was the cutscenes of the dunking. Everything else about that game is pretty poor. Great suggestion and thanks for watching!
F16 Fighting Falcon has bland graphics because it actually uses the Master System’s secondary graphics mode for running SG-1000 games. SG-1000 games can actually be played on the Master System, though this is physically impossible without either a flashcart or a Master System cartridge containing a conversion of an SG-1000 or MSX game ROM (such as the Mario bootleg “Super Boy” and its sequels). As such, it’s the only Master System game that doesn’t work on the Genesis using the power base adapter, as the Genesis lacks the secondary graphics mode.
The Master System has a close kinship with previous game consoles like the MSX, ColecoVision, and SG-1000. Someone is working on ports of ColecoVision games to the Master System, but those games won't work on a Genesis (or Genesis emulators) because the tech's no longer there.
That's some serious knowledge you're dropping on us! I think that's pretty cool that the SMS could play the SG-1000 games although via flashcart or cartridge. You sure do know your SMS stuff, thanks for sharing and watching!

Have to disagree on the Smurfs, its actually a pretty decent game on every platform it got released on. Great music too. There are worse game than this on the platform.

Well, I will say that I know F-16 Fighting Falcon has aged very poorly, but man, I had a lot of fun with it as a kid. It was one of the first SMS games I ever played, and was most definitely the first flight sim game I played, forming the foundation of my off-and-on obsession with these types of games. I liked the two-controller control scheme and the first person HUD + cockpit view, and the dull grid terrain didn't bother me much, because I'd just made the jump from Atari at the time. I eventually moved on to other, better SMS games, but I still had fun with it for a while, and it's kind of beloved to me despite its flaws. Side note - Probably my all-time favorite flight sim is F-15 Strike Eagle 2 on the Sega Genesis. I'm pretty sure it's better received than Fighting Falcon was by a long shot, but it still has some flaws (janky frame rate, ear-bleeding incoming missile alert sound, useless friendly aircraft, random undetected "ghost missiles" launched by nobody in particular). Nonetheless, I still play this game even now, and I can't say that I would have ever been interested in it if it weren't for Fighting Falcon.
Hey this is all opinion based! If you love F-16 Fighting Falcon, more power to you! I love hearing different opinions and experiences on games. I had a Chuck Yager Flight Simulator on the computer from when I was a kid, and I loved it but I'm sure it's aged poorly. You make a lot of great points on F-16 Fighting Falcon. I certainly don't blame anyone for thinking F-16 Fighting Falcon is crap, because I can confirm that it hasn't aged well at all, and it's just one of those games that is best left to nostalgia. It's kind of like ET in that regard. There was that time where it was almost a meme that "ET is the worst game ever", and I thought it was kinda funny, because I had that game on the Atari, as did everyone else I knew back then with an Atari, and not only did I not feel that way about it, but nobody else I knew did either. It was just another Atari game, and sometimes you threw it on and played through it. But that doesn't mean I have any desire to revisit the game. Once again, best left to nostalgia. Of course, ET has gone through a bit of a more positive perspective more recently, probably because of the lore surrounding it. I don't expect the same to happen to F-16 Fighting Falcon! I definitely recommend checking out F-15 Strike Eagle 2 if you can find it (or emulate it). It does have those flaws I mentioned, but I don't think they're gonna be a dealbreaker. The missions are very simple - here's your primary target, and your secondary target, now go blow them up. And then you're sent off on these rather huge maps to go complete your mission. Much like F-16 Fighting Falcon, there's no attempt at a "story" at all, and for me, this is a big positive when it comes to flight sims. It's also another one with the first person HUD + cockpit view, and while I strongly recommend sticking to this view when engaging with targets, you can freely change the camera view at any time, including a view of the pilot, which I feel like they just threw in there for the hell of it.

Hang on a second, some of these games like Running Battle and Smurfs are really good. Back to the Future 2 plays better on Amiga by default but some of these choices are just weird. 😆
Someone said that Running Battle isn't too bad once you get used to the controls. I've seen a lot of people defending The Smurfs and I love to see it! It makes me want to give it another shot. But Back to the Future 2.... I've heard some really bad things about on the SMS haha.

Flintstones is the worst SMS game IMO, closely followed by BTTF2. Alf is bad but it's still playable. I'm torn on Ace of Aces, first play I thought it was terrible, the more I played it the better I got until I could manage to do most of the missions but could never finish them as I couldn't figure out how to land :D! Always swore I'd return to it one day and beat it... Running Battle isn't too bad when you get used to it but it is a corny as hell game!

Ugh, bad hit detection is the worst!!! Nothing quite as disappointing as a beloved movie with a crappy game 😕 I was gonna say that the Smurfs game looked ok... but screen tearing and slipping through the ground at the edges would do it. Yuck! F-16 looks like a pretty impressive feat... but that doesn't mean it's fun. Yeah, still interesting to see what they were able to make happen on the SMS. Alf! Haha, at least it's not as bad as the ET game on the Commodore ;) (that was the best silver lining I could come up with) Excellent ep! Well put together as always!
Unfortunately, most movie games tend to stink : ( Which is really too bad. That smurfs game could be a lot of fun, but if you notice the last clip I use for it you will see why it stinks, the smurf jumps and he is like a full inch onto a platform and just falls through. Lowkey, the ET game is just misunderstood!! I love the history behind the ET game and it's a brilliant game... (kinda) if you realize how the programmer meant for it to be played. @@collector8631 I hadn't heard of that one, but I watch a long-play and it looks really cool actually... unrelentingly difficult, but cool. Varied levels, interesting platforming mechanics. The main problem was just the lack of peripheral vision making enemies come out of nowhere. I like the level design though. The balloons the clowns release so you can use them for vertical ascent was an especially fun mechanic. Very cool game. I don't know hardly any game gear games.
great video haven't played a single one of these but it brings me back to the days of renting a snes game from blockbuster and it sucking ass for the whole weekend and just being mad. Home alone 2 was one of them

This is a really hard video to put out there without playing every single sms games it’s hard to put a list out there unless you have played everyone. Ace of ace and F16 definitely the worst games out there and should be 1 & 2. Running battle isn’t that bad once you played it a few times. I think jungle book and flintstones are bad.
That's true but I bet there are only a handful of people that have beaten every single SMS game! It's weird how the flight simulators really bombed on the SMS. @@TigerChainsawVideoGames My opinion of old flight simulators was they were at best a novelty, but they weren't actually fun. There was some satisfaction of learning how they worked and completing a mission, but it felt more like work than a game. And of all games from the 80's, they have aged the worst by far. The weird, abstract graphics that don't really look like, well, anything adds to the pain. I still have an F-18 simulator for the Atari 7800, but unlike back in the 80's, I can't finish a single mission now. And I marvel at the patience I must have had back then to figure out how that nightmare or a simulator even worked.

I considered getting Ace of Aces for the 7800 because I thought a flight simulator would be cool. But the screenshots on the box had me wondering what I was even looking at. The 7800 was already a crushing disappointment, so I'm glad I didn't double down the misery with that game.
No way Alf is the worst. I mean it's ALF 1st of all. The fact that it's ALF alone gets it points. I know you're younger but back in the day ALF was like Bart Simpson. He was everywhere and you loved him. Pick that crap flight simulator or Pit Fighter. ALF has substance. You need the sausage from the fridge to get passed a certain spot. That right there puts it above Ace Of Aces. I gotta sell you on this lol
I'll say I've never seen the show ALF but my dad did enjoy it. We had a stuffed ALF doll.... still do maybe? Pit Fighter is atrocious and those flight sims aren't far off. I do enjoy lots of sausage so perhaps I'll give it ago. I'd rather see you live stream beat ALF though.... maybe you do that and convince me haha
I agree with everything except Running Battle. Not a classic by any means, but it's definitely not that bad once you get into it. It's good for a quick 15 min run or so.
Graphical the time the game came out it should of looked better. I played in the late 2000s it was given too me when I was cleaning out an old video store. Got me SNES, GENESIS, NES and Master system. Running battle totally broken you can spam loop the jump kick its drags you n the enemy too the end of the stage lol
If you'd ask me when it was 2022, a stinker for the Master System (heck, the Game Gear for that matter) is Sonic 2. The reason why I'd say it was bad and deserved a spot on this list is its painfully bad difficulty, and the only redeeming quality for that game is Green Hills Zone...AND THAT'S ALL I'D SAY THAT WAS GOOD! Now that it's 2023, I say that its an average game.
