I was flying a USAF KC-135, on approach to landing, when there was an airborne explosion and the air traffic controller announced “(call sign) Lost Radar Contact.” Those words burned a hole in my soul. They still do even now, years later. I lost friends that day. My plane and the one that exploded were the only ones in the local area at the time. We landed, turned in our post-flight paperwork, and at one of the debrief/turn in offices I was met by a person who had two crew rosters in her hands. She looked at me then said, “Now I know who it was.” For me, hearing those words was just chilling. If you want to read the details, look up Loring AFB KC-135 crash October 1989. The cause of the explosion was a badly worn fuel pump, which overheated and ignited the fuel vapors in the main fuel tank. They crew had no way to know, and had no chance.

During September 11, A lady fell from a higher floor and survived because her legs and lower body pulverized enough to survive the fall. A first responder placed a decease ticket on her. She mumbled I'm alive and call my daughter, but the first responder lied and said shed be fine, but he knew she was gone.
According to a news article cited by Wikipedia, four passengers from the Kazakhstan plane and 2 passengers from the Saudi Airways 747 survived the initial crash, but all died shortly afterwards. The Kazakhstan plane crash-landed, while the Saudi jet entered a nearly-supersonic dive, breaking up from the force of the descent. I could understand there being initial survivors from the Kazakhstan jet, but I find it a miracle that anyone could even survive the initial nosedive of any plane from that high up. It would be more interesting though, if they had indeed survived and recovered.
They would have had to have been in the tail end of the plane. Where a good portion of the force would have been taken up by the nose and midsection of the plane. This is for the Saudi plane, though I don't think even if there was a first responder there right on the ground and jumped in, anyone could have survived.
Having just watched a video where the air traffic controller making a mistake was the biggest factor in a collision on a runway, it's good to see that wasn't a problem in this one.
at the same time you feel for the guy cause at least for a few days he has this cloud hanging over him of "oh did I just get all of these people killed". As certain as someone can be that they did the right job, there is always that little bit of internal doubt. Glad his name was cleared so quickly
@@patrickleighpresents749 if you’re talking about Tenerife, that wasn’t the controllers fault. ATC told them to standby for takeoff, but the radio jammed. And the crew of the Pan Am tried to communicate over the radio that they were still on the runway, but again, there was radio interference. It didn’t help that it was too foggy to see anything, as well as every single aircraft being way behind schedule, causing crews to grow impatient. Everything about that incident was just so tragically unfortunate, and for you to just throw all the blame on the ATC is utterly shameful. You should look into the actual facts of that incident before throwing dirt on a dead man
I have a reoccurring nightmare of being on an airliner when it nose dives into the ground. Been experiencing this dream for the last 40 years. Here's my question, do I have a moral or ethical obligation NOT to fly commercial being fully cognizant of this reoccurring dream?? The dream always ends where the nose of the plane is just five feet above the ground just before IMPACT. I have this dream about once a week. And why I watch this channel to come to terms with it. Most of the crash is pretty survivable, it's those last few feet that really screw it up. Sorry, terrible gallows humor. I used to have a fear of heights, flying, etc but after nearly dying of a health condition in 2010, I only fear suffering.

Theoretically, that dream could be the eleventh in your life, or some arbitrary number. I have intrusive thoughts. They cause anxiety. I don't believe they're real, and I don't act on them. The harder I try and avoid the things that provoke the thoughts, the worse it gets. You're unlikely to be the factor in a crash, unless you are a pilot, crew, or aircraft maintenance worker, or you intentionally cause it with more than just sitting quietly in economy. Many countries including India, receive fees for landings and takeoffs from their major airports. So India opened the New Delhi airport to any and all international flights without first upgrading the field for increased traffic. Money over safety, you know.
No matter which part of public safety your job entails, if you’re lacking abilities that cause terror at work- it’s time to either get remedial training or switch your profession. I’m not an aircraft controller but my job will affect many people if I do it incorrectly. My advice to someone that doesn’t go to work with full confidence- learn additional skills to gain that confidence🙏
My dad was set to fly on United flight 826 on December 16, 1960 from O'Hare. He fell asleep in the SEATAC airport and missed that connector flight. It crashed over NYC with no survivors.
Even though they were basically at the same altitude in the air i think its crazy that they ended up meeting at the EXACT same time, if the Khasakstan plane was behind even a minute they most likely wouldn't have met each other at the same spot and the Saudi plane would have flown untouched in front of them. The odds just seem insane

While it is a horrible tragedy for so many -- the 349 people on board, and more so for all their loved ones who suffered their loss -- I take some comfort in knowing their end was very quick and without dread. There was an old saying that went, "they never knew what hit them." As I suffer from a chronic illness that makes each day a greater struggle, I almost envy them. They lived until they died. Some will say, "but it shouldn't have happened." All I can is, but it did. And there are worse things in this world than a quick death. Plus, many learned from this horrible event. That's the best we can hope for sometimes. I am also very grateful that both planes went down in rural areas, rather than over a neighborhood or city street.

I live with chronic pain and hear where you're coming from. While I still cherish every day I have, the pain can turn me into someone I don't like very much, a short tempered smart mouthed b*tch who is exactly the opposite of who I was. It might have been more merciful to me, and those closest to me, if my end had been "here one second and gone the next". It didn't happen that way so all WE can do is our best to live and love to the best of our ability. Please do not wish to be gone. The skies above us seem massive, like the vastness of the Pacific Ocean, but when there are aircraft flying around up there in the volumes that they do today, this accident is actually a constant danger on a daily basis. ATC can only do so much to monitor the positions of aircraft in their span of control.
What I find chilling is that those last few seconds of the video of the Saudi B747 we see here IS REAL - not simulation. Somebody on the ground had a VHS camcorder (or commercial rig) at JUST the right time to capture. No other Mid-Air & few other crashes have this. Listen again you can tell that's actual impending crash footage, with the stricken jet engines wailing, tail upside down, last 1000' of altitude. It's a mind blowing scene - 45 deg down angle - and why the Saudi B747 cockpit was 35-40' buried. I say a prayer of thanks each time I fly that ALL those lives whose loss can seem senseless, has paved the way for improved safety, that we are Blessed by years after. Thank Mayday very well done. I remember a small plane crashing into a commercial passenger plane over California. I think they even made a "movie of the week" out of it. But this particular crash doesn't ring in my memory. November 12th, 1996. My daughter was born in January of 96. By November I would've been working a lot of hours. I was likely focusing on what was happening in my immediate vicinity, and not paying much attention to news stories.
They really don't highlight the fact that the altimeters on the Kazakh flight were metric. As opposed to imperial which is the standard. It would have added another layer in the Kazakh crew's confusion navigating in a western style airspace. Repp was just not cut out for that position but really that plane is just too complex for newer crew members.
Unfortunately, deadlines do not mean much in India. That is why the secondary radar wasn't installed on time. If you've ever done business in India you'll know what I mean. They just don't have the same sense of urgency as most places around the globe.
Years ago while a passenger on a commercial airline flying from Mpls to St Louis, I looked out the window to see another airline fly beneath me. It was so close that I could see a passenger in the plane beneath us looking up at us. That was way too close for comfort. I looked around to see that only I and another passenger had seen this. I decided not to say anything since the plane flew beneath us without any damage to our plane. That was the last time I flew anywhere by plane. If I travel any where now it will be by bus.

I understand how you feel, but you should have reported it, if not the moment you landed, then as soon thereafter as possible. Such reports are always taken seriously, both by the airlines and the agencies (FAA, NTSB, etc.) that regulate commercial air travel in the U.S. and elsewhere. They can (and often do) lead to changes in flight patterns and other routine aviation protocol that help to prevent future mishaps, and thus save lives. I have nothing against buses, but statistically, flying is much safer than any form of ground transport, public or private. All the more reason to be vigilant, and to demand improvements for the benefit of passengers, regardless of which mode of travel they prefer, or the outfit on which they rely.
I mean this was the rule written in blood that sped up TCAS rollout, though confusion between TCAS and ATC instructions did cause the Überlingen episode six years later

I really don't understand the global standard of only 1,000 feet vertical separation. I had another Airbus fly under my plane at a 90 degree angle to us, I could see the captain and copilot plain as day. It freaked me out. Why not ensure vertical and horizontal separation? It's a bit extra work for the controllers.

Im always amazed more planes don't collide as the amount of air traffic is insane. I personally never step foot on a plane. My flying phobia is crazy to a lot of people but to me it makes complete sense 😂
I was outdoors one dark night on Guam at Andersen Air Force Base where I lived with my career dad and family. Suddenly the entire half of the sky, a half dome over Earth of fire and red orange black rolling chaos. Two B-52's had crashed shortly after take off. They had been loaded for a mission request. I honestly thought that the Communists had come to aide with Viet Cong since they only used SAM's. It was just one of the many experiences as a Military Family. I was 14 at the time. 1968.
I watch these all the time. Would I still go on an airliner? Yes. Am I afraid of planes as a result of watching this? No. Because every single time a crash happens, the people who make these planes try their damnedest to make them safer anyway they can, so they can prevent another accident from happening.
This is why I am scared of flying on a plane even though I have flied on them a few times. You never know if you’re going to make it to your destination. Low fuel, engine failure, pilot error, so many things could go wrong.
Like, all this wide open sky, and these two planes wind up sharing the exact same coordinates and altitude as they collide. I understand things like flight ceilings and such, but like, what are the odds???
I always hear this type of music when I'm on hold waiting for a Verizon phone representative or representative of Com Ed Electric and being put on hold for almost 2 hours.
It seems illogical to me to have a plane descending on approach to hold altitude ABOVE an airplane ascending on departure. These aircraft were approaching one another in both azimuth and altitude, an accident just waiting to happen.
It's mentioned in the video that at the time, the New Delhi basically used just one air corridor for commercial traffic, with the other 3 being used for military traffic. It makes sense to me that the approaching flight, which is descending from a higher altitude, would be kept at the higher altitude, and the ascending flight would be held at a lower altitude until they pass the other plane.
It would have been more merciful for all the passengers to have been killed instantly on impact rather than live through the horrifying spiral to the ground.
The reenactment of this is so real its kinda horrifying. I don't know how they managed to hire actors who'd willingly sign up for that gig full well knowing the plane they'd be flying in would slam into the canyon wall and disintegrate at impact. The extremes they go to to film a reenactment is quite compelling. Maybe they sign up actors who are all on a suicide mission and simply want to go out in a blaze of glory.

When you board a plane, train, bus, or car, you are placing your life in the hands of humans. Humans make mistakes. In only one of these forms of travel, can one avoid an .accident by someone else's failure. That's the car. Planes? Aside from the dozens of builders of the plane, probably 20 people, all must do their jobs correctly. Bus and car get it down to one. Trains, I don't know how many people need to do their jobs correctly to have safe passage, probably a dozen or so. Close call in SLC, 737 headed North to Portland, another 737 headed south breezed by our plane about 200 ft away, i saw both pilot and co-pilot of other plane heads whip toward our plane as they shot by...i don't fly unless I simply have no other option.
@@DPBGMODELRAILROAD I realize this is true, but you can avoid some collisions by driving defensively, plus, you have a much higher survival rate than in a plane crash, one can encounter injury just by walking, but its less likely.

I can tell you that although my chance of dying in a car crash is way higher, I would absolutely still rather die in a car crash than in a plane crash. Going down or crashing from 30,000ft at 500mph- just nope. I understand why people don’t set foot on planes but get in cars.
Every single person who's died in a crash would have told me " Relax there's nothing to worry about don't be silly it's so safe" But of course their all DEAD.
