At the 1999 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons, for some inexplicable reason, made a trade with the Baltimore Ravens where the Falcons got a second round pick, and in return, the Ravens got a first round pick. The trade turned out to be a disaster of epic proportions. This is the story behind why the Falcons made the trade, and why it was so bad
NOTE: Because the NFL does not understand how fair use works, one part of the video had to be removed around the 7:45 mark, which just talked about Kelly's drop

Trading a 1st round pick for a 2nd round pick doesn't even make common sense. Let alone they did this for a BLOCKING TE.

Jamal Lewis was really something. People forget. Even us that watched him. Not taking anything away from Lewis, this is more of a testament to Tennessee’s depth in the 1990’s. It seemed you could just plug in whoever the next guy at running back. And he was going to tear it up. A lot of positions. But RB and WR especially.

Trading a future 1st rounder for a blocking tight end. The Falcons needed those stats nerds 22 years ago badly I could see this making sense if a QB or a DK Metcalf level WR free fall into round 2. But a blocking tight end? Yikes.
@paulgaither
@paulgaither 3 года назад
Trading a first round pick? Stat nerds agree. However, you want to do it to aquire multiple later round and future picks. Football is a "weak link" sport, and having multiple mid level players is much better than one star surrounded by garbage.
@hornetguy9063
@hornetguy9063 3 года назад
Paul Gaither yeah there’s definitely good reason to trade first round picks. The Patriots had tons of success filling their rosters out with middle of the draft guys for a long time. Most teams with sustained success do likewise. I’m more referencing that blocking TEs are basically never a resource worth a 1st rounder on. They just won’t impact winning enough
@paulgaither

Paul Gaither Cleveland using the get out of jail free card by the colts taking on their awful pick of TRich at #3 by reaching on Manzell. You’re assuming a ton of risk by putting your draft capital on one guy. It could work out great, it could be a bust. The only position that’s really worth reaching on is QB
@paulgaither
@paulgaither 3 года назад
@@hornetguy9063 - Well... it first depends on how you define "reach". Draft projections are just that - what people THINK a player might be worth and where they might land, which is subjective and irrelevant once a team actually picks them. Also, it is less about position to reach for so much as role on the team. A playmaker at TE like Shannon Sharpe, Rob Gronkowski, and the 49ers George Kittle have been fantastic selections I would be happy giving up a future first round pick in exchange for having had them as rookies on my team. However, as was said, the problem is that a run blocking TE is not nearly as valuable as Dan Reeves tried to imply on TV when asked wtf he was thinking by Chris Berman.
@nasetvideos
@nasetvideos 3 года назад
Wow...that most certainly is one where you ask, "wait, what did I just hear...what did they just do?" That is definitely one of the worst ideas from a general manager I've every heard and truly boggles the mind as to the rationale for doing it.

Chris Berman mentioned how Dan Reeves seemed to take a page out of the Bobby Beathard playbook by trading a future first round pick for a current second round pick. I mentioned in the Willie McGinest video that the Chargers did that in 1993 when Beathard was their GM. Beathard and the Chargers did the same thing with Washington in 1991, allowing the defending champions TFKAR to draft Heisman Trophy Winner Desmond Howard. Of course Beathard was Washington’s GM during the 1980s. As the unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian I’ll point out that you made two videos about the time when Washington traded its first round pick in 1987 to San Francisco for swapping second round picks in 1986.

I presume he was a very good blocking tight end, to stick around as long as he did with such low production as a receiver. This is a great counterpoint to this video saying don't give up first round picks for second rounders. The sequence of events isn't the same, but the Packers at the time made a huge gamble acquiring a struggling second round QB for the price of future first round pick. It was disastrous for Atlanta on both ends, losing a franchise QB in Favre, in turn drafting a bust RB with Smith.

I agree that Kelly was drafted too high. You can find what he offered from the 4th round to the end of the draft. That being said, if Jamal Anderson is healthy in 1999, the Falcons don't fall nearly so far. They went 5-11 and he played 2 games. If he plays the full year, let's say they even win 4 more. This isn't beyond the realm of possibility. Then you have a 9-7 record and a much lower pick. If you NEED to deal for a 2, try to package a couple of lower rounders and maybe a 3 from the next year. Some of what was taken in round 2, after the Kelly pick...... Jim Kleinsasser TE-FB, a better receiver with more versatility. Kevin Faulk, maybe the best 3rd down back in Patriots history. Russell Davis, a solid DT. Peerless Price....much like Alvin Harper in Dallas, he fit quite well as a downfield threat IF he had a strong number 1 WR to pair with. He fits as a replacement for Tony Martin and you mix and match from there or work to acquire a big guy to run with him. If you want an athletic OL....Randy Thomas was also at the end of that round.

This whole video is misleading. Falcons made it to the Super Bowl because of RB Jamal Anderson, who was the best RB at the time, along with Terrell Davis. This was a time when blocking FB was still a thing. Reeves wanted a blocking FB or TE to help Jamal and Kelly was the guy. It is not Reeves or the Falcons' fault that Jamal got hurt in the season after the Super Bowl and you can argue that getting Jamal blocking help was the right thing to do, as he was getting hit too much and got hurt. Kelly played great for the Falcons and Bengals and Kelly helped Rudi Johnson get three straight 1500 yard seasons. Kelly ended up being an elite TE in his career and was on par with Lorenzo Neal for his blocking.

Jamal Anderson and that defense! Remember they played the NFC West (Rams, 49ers, Panthers, Saints) and AFC East (Pats, Colts, Bills, Jets, Dolphins) it was a tough schedule at that time (SF, Buf, Mia, Jets were playoff teams in 98) Rams, Panthers and Patriots were also competitive that season. That D was stacked! Archambeau, Dronett, Smith up front, Cornelius Bennett, Jessie Tuggle and Keith Brooking were the linebackers and they had Ray Buchanan and Eugene Robinson in the secondary. Tony Martin took the focus off of Terence Mathis at receiver, Tim Dwight returning kicks, Morten Andersen was in his prime. This was also the year 44 year old Steve DeBerg backed up Crystal Chandelier (Chris Chandler), and they beat the Jets! it all came together for the Falcons that year, and fell apart too soon. It was fun to watch while it lasted.

@@diaz5292 I will say this... It was a bit too convenient for Brady to have won the SB again this year. They were 7--5 and losing to Atlanta during the season when the SON of the referee who called the 'Tuck" game came in, picked the ball up and moved it one full yard giving Tampa a first down vs Atlanta (they were trailing). That first down led to a touchdown and Tampa won... going 8-5 then they ran the table the rest of the way. I found that highly suspicious considering the NFL was hurting bad with ratings at the time (thanks to Woke-crap)... and they needed their "GOAT" aka their Michael Jordan or Wayne Gretzsky... so to speak... to come in and be the face of the league again. SB Should have been KC vs N.O. or at least KC vs GB. Some of us had this hunch the NFL was going to fix things so Brady could be there yet again. I think it's becoming more obvious as time goes on that it's all turned into "Entertainment" and not a sport anymore. Influenced heavily now by the "Corporate Footprint" of certain companies. Btw... research that game vs the Falcons and watch the video about it. Interesting stuff went on in that game even after the "free yard" play. Several other games had "help" by the refs to get the Buccs wins. Even when they blew Atlanta out in the 2nd match up later on.. some very odd and questionable calls in that game too
