Significant questions discussed amongst the fandom: 1) Can it get any worse? 2) What is this? When is this? Where is this? Why is this? 3) Should I just stop watching, or do I want to torture myself some more?
1) Yes it can always get worse. Look at starwars for example. 2) Amazons: Ring of Fanfiction, Nobody knows including Amazon since there is no coherent timeline with people teleporting around the world and the numenorians have a tardis from dr who in the shape of a boat, Amazon thought they could make money on this trash. 3) no
The only thing I learnt from the show was how creepy a smile could be in slow motion that, and nose twitching. My nightmares will forever be haunted by that!
I too had never imagined just how disturbing a close-up of a woman 'enjoying' a horsey-ride could appear. Nor how pant-shittingly terrifying a rabbit-twitch would be on a human (not elven) face.
As someone who quite vividly remembers how absolutely blown away and utterly flabbergasted I have been by Cate Blanchett's Galadriel in the FotR - I was 10 years old at the time - I simply *CANNOT* imagine any kid that age even close to that impression. I remember her voice totally rooting me into the theatre chair; I remember how blown away by her beauty I have been; I remember how ethereal and magical she looked; I remember wishing I could attain even a smidgen of her femininity. Guyladriel, on the other hand? If I were still that kid, I'd be tugging my mother's skirt, asking her who the absolutely awful lady was, and why is she supposed to be my hero. I'd ask her why the lady is so arrogant and if I should act that way? I'd ask if being condescending and demeaning of everyone around me would get me what I need from them?
From having a wide variety of characters, from which according to our individuality we could choose to admire and identify, now there are left only one type of character for each "community" linked by superficial traits as skin color or orientation. In the TV show those closer to me physically are scary people, they don't struggle with being good or to have moral dilemmas, they are sanctimonious; at the same time for being a man apparently, according to the characters in the TV show, my manliness is measured about how much of a non threat and how obedient I am for every important woman in the show that got to be a commander of armies (Galadriel, Miriel, Bronwyn)
Cate Blanchett had the thankless task of portraying one of the most enigmatic characters in western literature, and given her limited screen time she made a fantastic job of it. Clearly she, the writers and the director had understood why Tolkien created Galadriel, had appreciated what effect she'd had on his readers and were determined to re-create that impact for the cinema audience.
@@ReinoldFZ thats what they want, not what i give. kratos is white, voiced by a black, yet his character arc is very relatable, optimus prime and megatron are robots for fuck sake but they are relatable, these fools have no power on me and people like me
she still gives me chills and i still consider her voice as asmr, even in the hobbit her galadriel is on point, powerful yet kind, this bitch aint galadriel
@@richardfurness7556 i mean, that's really the big difference between the movie trilogy and the tv show at just about every level : Peter Jackson had a clear vision for his plot and his characters. Rings of power.... yeah, they had mystery boxes.....
"It is a good thing they ignored lore, we can't know what will happen next" Yeah, could be Halbrand-Sauron invents nuclear power ... or opens a portal and Stalin comes through with the USSR, to wage war on the west. So many possibilities... Ironman and Luke Skywalker could pop into existence to help Guyladriel on her neverending quest to find the manager...
@@maravertin I agree. Anything can happen… if you’re writing or creating an *original* fantasy work. If you’re adapting someone else’s work (Like RoP) you need to follow their rules and boundaries because they were set for a reason.
"The wonderful part of changing things up...one literally has no clue what will happen next." Well, in the case of RoP Season 1 it was pretty much nothing at all for the first seven episodes.
Be fair. After the end of episode 6 and everybody died in the volcanic eruption, we had no idea what could possibly happen in episode 7. I mean, their survival was obviously not on the cards.
@@troffle I mean with that ending scene of galadriel standing in front of the wave of burning air and ashes I genuinely thought she would wake up cuz it was all a bad dream lol
@@m.poppins4843 We could've had "intimacy co-ordinators" and we got Morfydd "smiling only when doing the horse with two backs seeing the Manager" Clark but no, the idea of Tolkien's works going into "English teacher forbids you to use 'but we woke up and it was all just a dream'" NO GODDAMNIT NO FRIGGING NO BETTER THAT EVERY AMAZON OFFICE BURN TO THE GROUND NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese Admiral galadriel of noldor, reportedly wrote in her diary, “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.”
Less than 2 million people watched the whole series. I live in Australia and nobody watched it. Everyone watched the deepfake gandalf take the piss of it though
I love the fact that less than millions watched the garbage, and far more millions of people watched critics demolish it and kick it head first into Mt. Doom.
Can't take an article seriously if they say in the beginning that they had "Dissenting" opinions and then only write positives. (Edit. I wrote this before the ten minute mark where Jonny said the exact same thing)
"...I went into the series with low expectations that it would stick to the book." 😳Uhhh... wut? When I have low expectations of a film, its because I'm afraid it WON'T stick to the book. These people are aliens.
"No one really had an excellent answer for any [questions] raised". Probably because the writers didn't have answers either, just a pile of empty boxes with question marks drawn on them.
Yep. I watched the first two eps, while facepalming every two minutes. I knew it was site when we had Elven children portrayed as idiotic bullies and then Madladeriel taking aim with a punch. Never mind all the warping of Tolkien's works, it was clearly terribly written off the bat. As for the Christmas cracker Rings of Power themselves...what were they thinking?
I watched 6:21 of episode one. Turned it off and fed my curiosity by watching it through people reviewing it online. What an awful horrible show. The propaganda was extremely distasteful even though I expected it, but even if I tune out “the message” it was just an awful show on its own merits. The thing that really got me was episode one when Galadriel says “this place is so evil our torches give off no heat”. Am I supposed to believe that in this universe “evil” makes hot things cold? The show is called rings of power the whole idea of it is that an evil dark lord forges a ring to control all other rings of power. The “dark lord” (dark lords are typically viewed as evil) forges a ring in a volcano with molten lava. How can you forge something if you are evil and evil makes hot go cold? It makes no sense and I can’t get past that silly stupid little remark made for absolutely no reason. As far as I am aware the comment about this place being so evil their torches give off no heat played no part in the entire rest of the story. Why just why?
I watched two episodes back to back but I fell asleep halfway through one and woke up halfway in to the next one and I didn’t bother going back to see what I missed. As it turns out, I didn’t miss anything anyway.
I liked the part where Galadriel survived at pyroclastic cloud at point blank and survived with no injuries *whatsoever*. Up to 1,000 C with molten rock, glass and superheated gas and not a single problem whatsoever. Amazing stuff!
Gary in the Nerdrotic told us all who Sauron was liiiiike 2-3 months maybe even more than that before the show aired, anyway as always, a great video mate. You are amazing.
I got to be moderator in a big forum like six years ago, it is just impossible for a forum to be neutral because the owners risk to loss their access and privileges., the glee and excitement these people talk about something objectively bad is pretty familiar to me. And they are crazy, everybody knew who was Sauron; what nobody knew was that Galadriel was the one that put the man as king of Mordor O..O she took him from the ocean to Mordor and asked everybody to declare him king 🤴 and when she found out who he was she hid the truth.
Speaking about elves, the thing is, to me, in our beloved LotR movies, different elves even looked differently from each other. For example, Galadriel looked like she really was one of the First, I mean someone who’s definitely seen the Light of the Trees. There was something extremely as people said here, “ethereal” and completely, idk how to put it, not earthly. That’s in comparison to elves like Elrond, who looked very “elvish” but not as “high” as Galadriel. That’s the details that they could capture and show us. That was discussed here often but I’m still impressed by it
Amazon purchased rights for a lot of money to make Rings of Power. What did they buy exactly? Not a story, it was really just historical notes. What they purchased was access to the fan base. Period. They bought access to millions of fans eager to watch anything based on Tolkien, which is what is completely baffling about their decision to shit on the fans. If you wanted to go after non-fans, they could have saved $250million and write an original story, but they bought access to the fans then told them this show wasn’t for them. It’s like buying a new Mercedes and taking the wiper fluid and throwing out the rest of the car, the one valuable thing they bought they chucked out. All they had to do was appease the fans and they would have made a fortune, but they assumed the fans would love whatever shit they threw at them so focused on the non-fans, which was a bad idea to say the least.
I believe they purchased a powerful "brand", that they knew would draw millions to watch whatever content they decided to produce. This is why they insist that, before it is "The Rings of Power", it is above else "The Lord of the Rings". So they had the name, they threw in a lot of money, they made it look very pretty... and that is it. They did not care if it was faithful to J.R.R. Tolkien or if the writing was even good. And in the end, all the controversy makes that for an efficient, free publicity. Hence a new video from Johny Law on the topic. ^_^
I tuned into Rings of Power hoping to spend time in the universe that Tolkien created. To my dismay, I wallowed in some clusterfuc*k world that defies explanation. It's not Tolkien, not even close/
the sad thing is i honestly believe there's nobody left at oneringnet that has any problems with the show. Because i honestly believe everyone at that site who'd actually read the books left long ago when the site sold it's soul to Amazon for twitter clout i can only imagine the buyers remorse they must be feeling these days....
They're breaking glass ceilings by smashing the monopoly of good writers over amazing franchises to give the opportunity to talentless hacks with absolutely zero understanding of the effort and patience required to write as Tolkien did. He didn't just sit down to write a series of fantasy novels. The guy studied, worked and prepared to invent a whole new mythology for his people and almost every line mirrors that ambition. These people aren't fit to carry his shoes. They butchered his work in a sad attempt to wring more money out of a well run dry. They are salivating after the massive success of the LotR trilogy to the point where they're willing to attempt to stretch a book of myths into some Frankenstein's monster of a TV series to capitalize on the "Tolkien franchise".
I think Morfidd Clarck took that baton for Cate Blanchett and done some.......unspeakable things with it. That poor Baton will be in therapy for the rest of it's life.
I simply couldn't force myself to watch that. I value the source material and Peter's Jackson trilogy too much to subjugate myself to thes torture. Recently I've come across video with the title "Elves comparison - Peter Jackson vs Amazon" and I think no comments are needed.
"It wasnt too long into the series that significant questions were being discussed amongst the fandom". A good serie is not based on queries. A good serie is based on a clear plot with strong stakes, which creates tension and maintains the viewership attention. And the scenarists does not understand that. They have hidden the real stakes, like Adar plans to be creating the Mordor, or the identity of Halbrand, in order to have plot twist. Ok, we are surprised (or not) when there is the revelation, but the result is that we are bored during the 5 first episodes. Galadriel says there is a danger, but all what we see is a group of orcs having difficulties with a small village of peasants. In the worst case, we assume that some men will die, but even so, there is still no real threat to middle earth. The strong kingdoms of elves and men can easily annihilate the orcs. Like I say, the show runner undermined their own story by hidding the real stakes, which is a huge mistake. Guessing games are nice, but should not replace a good story. The all hobbit story seems to just be there to create some confusion around the identity of Sauron. It adds nothing to the season 1, it would have been better to remove this and concentrate on the 3 other (Galadriel and her revenge quest, Arondir and the south land, and Elrond with the Mithril). So advancing that the season is good because we had issues to predict what will happen is preposterous. Not to say that on the social media people had guessed the identity of Sauron since episod 3.
Nobody tell this person about the "mystery" genre of fiction. A show that makes you ask questions is a good thing it leads to conversation and therefore buzz around the show... Like the conversations surrounding Lost when it first came out Obviously as in the case of RoP the question shouldn't be "wtf was that shit?"
Torn went HARD left about a year before rop came out. Once they started posting PRIDE MONTH ARTICLES ABOUT LOTR my opinion of them changed pretty fast. Because as we all know the devout Catholic Tolkien would LOVE gay articles about his characters.
RoP *was* a Triumph. A 1960's British sportscar designed to leak oil and oveheat, with an elaborate arrangement of tallow candles in place of an electric system and a hundredweight of metal shims to compensate for good old British precision.
I love Rings of Power... didn't watch a minute of it, but gave me sheer endless content of RU-vidrs picking it apart while going mad to various degrees... absolutely loved it!
I did not even care enough about the show to figure out who Sauron was I thought at least going in that they wouldn’t have introduced him and it wouldn’t be anyone on screen, but I dropped out after the third episode, so I really didn’t even care enough about the show to continue watching, which is why I didn’t know who Sharon was, but I don’t care it’s dark and I’m sure if I had actually watched it with the intent of trying to figure it out, I would figure it out within five seconds
I’ve learnt that this show really is just for the casual viewer, my dad loved the Jackson films and read some of the books. I thought he’d have a similar opinion to myself about RoP but he actually liked it so it really is just for casuals and not for lovers of Tolkien lore
I know nothing of Tolkien outside of what's presented in the Lego games. I'm as casual as they come, and I think ROP is garbage because the characters and events make *no damn sense.* This show strikes me as being more for people that purely like the visuals and/or the _idea_ of fantasy.
I'm a book and film watcher and i loved the series because it was a different spin, I watched it as if it were a separate entity. Galadriel was angry woman, I'm hoping the damage control results in her becoming calm, zen and celestrial. The dynamic between the characters is amazing, the potential....though I'm looking at it through alternate universe googles when it comes to the 'love' angle.
I LOVE YOUR HOODIE And also how this show gonna claim deviating from canon was justified when it's STILL PAINFULLY PREDICTABLE. SO PREDICTABLE, that everyone knew who Sauron was THE moment he appeared on screen. IN THE TRAILER.
I always pictured France as having grape vines and musketeers everywhere. With the Eiffel tower as their headquarters. We don't learn about other countries in America
I'm French and don't understand the flushing toilets joke ...? I have heard we're dirty, rude, promiscuous and baguette, never heard someone complain about our toilets.
the thing is i've got plenty of facts and examples to explain why the show sucks but i'am 100% sure that these people can only say smth like "ooh it's good because it's really good"
Fan from Iran Jonny. Looking forward to see more content from you. And perhaps playing some music like what you did and the end of the Avatar video. I genuinely enjoyed it.
Is that one person saying that they went into it expecting and HOPING that it didn't stick to the book? And they were "thrilled" because in the end it didn't stick to the book?
Spineless, but each of them got paid for their "widely independent views". That were all positive. Now here's our ad for Rings of Power on your website where you read our review of the show.
I’m so upset now on hearing T.O.R.N. Has fallen to the Dark Lord 😞. They were the ones 20odd years ago keeping Peter Jackson more or less on track. I’m familiar with free dragon. I would have thought they’d be leading the charge against this of front to Tolkien & logic 😣
Can this critique from the TOR could be called intellectual prostitution without being an insult. I think that TOR has been the only fan group that praised Rop. In spite of ROP killing the lore and Tolkien works. Beyond the point of breaking of the Lore and canon that can be disliked by most fans. As it was a total reinterpretation to make middle earth into nothing as Professor Tolkien wrote about. The series failed even if We condescended and considered it generic fantasy it was still bad. It was Dull, dumb and poorly made.
I can not even imagine re-watching ROP - even just the three episodes I did watch. it's like if they keep saying it was great that somehow it becomes that way? Maybe....hmmmm Oh and 3-1 eh......LOL...not so much buddy boy....yeah I'm talking to you sir Jonny Law !!!
My honest opinion is that I like the cut of your jib. After your Wendy and the Adventures of Wendy review I watched this and promptly subscribed. Your witty humour cracks me up, out of the blue, so I'm taken by surprise. You are not the first content creator I have discovered thanks to the atrocities such corporations as Disney and Amazong have produced. Thank you for making quality content! I look forward to seeing more and browsing your other videos.
I mean, the show was barely coherent for crying out a loud. All opinions are not worth the same. For instance, I'd respect & would like to hear Thomas Shippey's take on all of this.
Rings of Power feels like finding dog poop on your shoe after you tracked in your house. Except a dog would never call you racist for disliking its poop.
Their original contract was good reviews for early access but then they sold out to Amazon. I am sure at the time Amazon thought it was a good deal. lol
The writers and producers are utterly deluded. This show is firstly a truly epically poor adaptation and secondly, on almost every single level, a terrible travesty of a show.
Glad your LotR's takes are better then your soccer predictions. 0-0 tie, that's actually a huge W for the US, and a big ol L for England. Even in the US they kept saying it'd be 3-0, 3-1. This is w/the US's 3rd and 4th tier athletes, our best get paid in the NFL, NBA and MLB, and even NHL. The world better hope that holds form for the foreseeable future b/c if even our 3rd tier move to soccer the world is going to have trouble on their hands every 4 years.
It seems quite obvious that the writer of the article is lacking some essential skills in critical self-reflection. In German there exists the expression Armutszeugnis (evidence of incapacity). I think such a description is a more appropriate one. Because it also means the situation is somewhat sad and possibly hopeless.
I actually think Morfydd Clark is getting too much blame for her performance. The fact that she acts the same way in every scene is rather a testament of how awful the director is to not, well, *direct* her differently. The director must have no sense of the greater picture at all, if these scenes seemed acceptable. It's like the laughably bad dialogue in the Star Wars prequels, it's not the actors' fault that all their lines were seemingly written by a 13-year old who thinks he's being deep.
I can't give a honest opinion on season 1 since I only watched the first episode. After one spoonful of sh1t, nobody has to finish their serve and clean the plate with a piece of bread.
I feel sorry for Tolkein fans who actually watch the show, nothing is right at all even before the level of the storyline itself. Everything is designed to deliver the producers point of view even at the cost of tearing Tolkein's heart apart from his chest, while his cropse is picking out of the grave (that is how bad the show actually violates Tolkein's work and I am not the only one to thing like that). The elves are completely misunderstood, depicted one moment as medival LARPs and as netural born supermodels who fly in the air and never sweat the next. In the beginning of the show for example the battle against the Troll should have being much more realistic and hard for the elves, even with Galadriel posing for a women's beauty product while killing a beast with little to know effort. By the way, for the intellegent of you, did Galadriel slay this Troll because she is supposed to be a SKILLED elven Warrior or because she isn't a male? Also , the trees of Valinor were destroyed by a dark being, who was it? A)an unknown fire spirit B)Sauron in a fire spirit form C) Saruman D) A giant demonic spider which Shelob is a decandant from E) Morgoth F) the last two options
