I personally would have taken it back to the store on the first day when it wouldn't start and gotten my money back. $500 is way too much money to lose on junk equipment straight from the factory. Is there a reason you didn't return it that first day?

The primer on my Tazz walk behind (Chinese) requires a 2 second wait between pushes. This is called for in the manual. The directions are to give 3 pushes when cold and no priming when warm. It starts first pull every time. I've been using it for 3 years now.

A lot of times the plugs are not properly gapped at the factory. I typically check the plug gap on any equipment that is different to start.

Check to make sure Carb is not loose. Had a tiller do this, the plastic manifold between the carb and head was cracked. The engine ran lean, which caused it to overheat. My guess is a loose carb. The same thing happened to my Predator post-hole digger. Tightened the carb and ran like a champ. Great info. I have the Dirty Hand Tools version of this with a Kohler 6.5 Runs like a champ. Good for ditches.

I had a Toro brand of the same design. Mine survived 7 years of abuse. It was a beast, always cranked. It had a Tecumseh motor from what I remember. I now have a Stihl Kombi 130 or 135 w string trimmer that is also a beast. I finally changed the air filter on it after 8 years. It ALWAYS cranks and runs better and longer than I do. Stabil and marine gas gets it done.

I got the "Tazz" (model 40095) version from Amazon and it seems to differ from yours in that it has a separate kill switch for the engine while the bail on the handle controls the trimmer head clutch; a far more useful control setup. Mine runs wells and has plenty of power for dealing with tall grasses and vines under 1/4", but the main downside compared to the DR Premier 26 field and brush mower it is temporarily replacing (while the latter is in the shop getting a new transaxle under warranty...) is that trying to mow down woody stems shreds the trimmer strings in short order, despite that I am using the thickest strings it can handle (0.155"). Consequently, it really isn't a substitute for a brush mower. That said, it also cost about 1/5th as much as the DR, so there's that.

Mine starts and runs just fine.The only problem I had was when I hit a tv cable and it shredded my drive belt. I tried to find out the belt size and I ended up measuring it myself. If you are interested it is- 2"x37".

I bought a DR trimmer years ago. Sent it back to them within a week. Lucky for me they paid the shipping on the returns back then. I wanted it to trim a fence line and around my pond. In my opinion they are useless. Handheld trimmer is faster and easier. If only someone would make one with an offset head. Then they might be useful.

Howdy Brock! Yeah I'm having an issue with my one year old tiller... replaced the fuel, will run if I spray starter fluid constantly... but as soon as I stop with the starter fluid it dies. I thought the float was maybe sticking, but getting good fuel flow from the tank. Ugh... I really don't want to pull the carb off but I'm thinking that is next. Totally understand the frustration! Thanks for sharing 🤠

I'd suggest you go thru just basic diagnostics to pin down your specific problem. Really not much effort to pull and dissemble the carb and inspect. Usually just a piece of dirt or an adjustment/repair is all thats needed. 'Fuel" related issues seem to be most common now-a-days. Also make sure the choke setting is correct. Good Luck !! I would bet a chunk of money on it being the carburetor. Different brand but had similar issue with one I used to own and sold. I drained the fuel like you did, as well as took the bowl off the carburetor and drained it. Solved the problem long enough for me to sell it. For an almost sure fix, I would order a new carb and switch them out. I would imagine the carb is very inexpensive. Have had to do this on pressure washers in the past. Easier to replace the carb than fool around too long trying to clean it.

Sometimes a new piece of equipment has a bit of factory "dirt" that can get into the carb.. I have a new Champion engine that has an issue. I found a very tiny thin black disk in the bowl of the gas cut off valve. I have yet to look to see if another one got into the carb., causing the issues; but in the meantime I contacted Champion and they sent every part needed to replace every part that could be the issue :-) ...if not another bit of factory debris. I have two pieces of Champion equipment. Good company to deal with, especially when they know you are taking good care of your machines.

It's an air/fuel mixture problem. 1. Look down its throat hole and make sure the choke butterfly is fully opening when the choke lever stops moving (I don't think it's that because that wouldn't explain the hard starting but something to rule out) 2. While it's running close the choke a little at a time and if it runs smoother then you have a fuel restriction, if it runs worse or dies then you are getting to much fuel. 3. While it's running full speed put your hand over its throat hole and completely suffocate it till it dies, you want all the engine vacuum to be contained in the carb. Start it back up, (it'll black smoke for a second or two no big deal) this will hopefully dislodge any trash that might be clogging an orifice inside the carb, it might take two or three times of this. Anything further than this the carb will have to come apart to look everything over. 4. And this is the most important one of all...Stop letting your wife make decisions!! Have a great day

Somtimes the cable stretches to the the safety start bar, or is too long to begin with. If it doesn't start, or starts to die, bypass it by pulling back manually at the carburetor. If that doesn't work, another common problem is poor venting gas cap. If it dies, take off the gas cap, then put it back on. If it runs for a while, then quits, you need a new cap, or check the vent holes on the old one. These are usually factory sealed, and all you can do is soke it, and blow it out. It is less trouble just to get a new one, and soak the old for later.
@danoakes4071
@danoakes4071 Месяц назад
If it has a 650 series Briggs and Stratton, it could also have a damaged or missing intake manifold gasket where the manifold meets the cylinder. I found one of these where it was shipped from the factory without one, and it was drawing in excess air and dirt. It would start hard, requiring 10 or more pushes on the primer bulb. The threads of the bolts were run all the way down, but the manifold was just a little loose, rattling around. It was nearly 20 years old, built in 2006, and after a new coil (which bench checked bad), plug, and carburetor (the float cup attachment body had partially dissolved) , it started first pull. I put a new primer bulb in it too, but it starts without it, and now runs until out of gas, or you get tired. I also tossed the resistor plug, and replaced it with a comparable non-resistor type. Before I had worked on it, nothing had ever needed done to it but annual oil, plug and air filter changes, and lots of pulls on the starter rope. When it quit originally, it had been left out in the weather for two years, which explained the bad coil, and water in the carburetor bowl dissolving the works. It also had a frayed kill wire, which might have caused some problems. However, if that hadn't of happened, I wouldn't have discovered the missing gasket, and the whole thing might have ended up in the trash out of pure frustration with it.

I have a DR Trimmer that looks about like what you have. I do not have to hold the bail closed to start it. I can start the engine and the trimmer head will not turn until I pull the bail closed. If you are holding the bail closed while you are trying to start the trimmer, it will make it a LOT harder to start. My DR instructions say at the beginning to NOT hold the bail closed while starting. I also had one of the Husquevarna trimmers years ago and it was the same way. It is easy to get into the habit of holding the bail closed while starting if you use a push mower a lot...

He has multiple videos cleaning carbs. That’s why it won’t start without spaying down the throat of the carb to get it warmed up. This was caused by them storing it outside. Most weed-eaters are a pain. We use them year round here in south Florida. Quality fuel and the cleaning of filters and carb is the best way to keep them running. Often many people just don't know how to do common sense diagnostics to find the real problem and then repair it. Several pieces of my equipment are 3-10 years old. I do maintenance often, and try to stay ahead of repairs rather than having to fix at time of failure.

I don't have an application for that type of machine, but I do buy push lawnmowers. The only thing I look for in a mower is horsepower and that it's a Briggs and Stratton. I abuse the heck out of my mowers, cutting brush and heavy weeds. When the mower is completely shot and not useable, I get a new one. But every mower that I wear out, if it has a Briggs and Stratton motor, the motor still runs well. I buy a new one if the wheels fall off, the discharge parts break, the cables fail, or the handle gets damaged. My typical mower last for around two years. I push it under my breezeway for the winter, just making sure I run out all of the gas. In the spring, I put gas in it, and it starts with two or three pulls. I'm too old to have the time or patience to sit there and pull and pull to get a motor started. I think you're right in thinking your machine is a piece of junk. We win some and we lose some. The key is making sure we learn from the experience. Keep on learning, Brock, and keep on sharing!

I find old mowers and revive them to good working condition, as my hobby. Just taking care of them and they'll run for many years. Most engines are good if you change the oil, filters and use good clean fuel. When you run'em hard , yeaaa sooner or later you've worn them out to being a used parts machine. I get it, some people just don't like doing maintenance on small engines.

You should have taken it back and got another. Something in that one is defective. I have the same machine and had it for a year. I haven't used it since last until a day ago. Started right up. I was able to cut nearly three fect tall thick grass and weeds with it shutting off.

You may want to try some Sta-bil Fast Fix in your fuel. The surge could be caused by a dirty/gummy carb. The Fast Fix may help if it isn't in to bad of shape.

I didn’t see all 202 comments that are posted. I might recommend Lucas fuel treatment. I’ve had good luck with cleaning, gunk out of carburetor and carbon from engine.

maybe you can ask @StevesSmallEngineSaloon. my laymen opinion is that it sounds like your lines or your carburetor is gummed up. something is probably running too rich and flooding the engine. my (ryobi) pressure washer does the same thing, and i have to run it at half-throttle or else it will sit there and surge up and down and eventually turn off.

I bought one of those from HD and it did a good job for about three weeks, then the belt pulley on the drive spindle broke loose and would just spin on the shaft. Got my money back.

Try some sea foam. Pour a little in tank and run it , fixed mine that sat for a year.

It is kind of ironic that your yellow colored log splitter and generator are not lemons and this black thing........ The weed eater must have a restriction on the fuel or worse problems.

I bought a D R brand at the beginning of this summer. It's been sitting in our metal building more than it's been out of it. IF you can get it started it won't stay started. The BIGGEST waste of money I've ever spent. Never again.

I bought the cheapest DR trimmer mower they make and it works flawlessly for me. Only regret is not buying a better model with a clutch to disengage the cutting head. Mine just sings full-blast as long as the engine is running, which is kind of annoying when moving it around places you don't need to cut anything.

I find my stuff sits outside and the surface of the flywheel rusts. So it won’t create sparks. Remove the cover, and sand the flywheel magneto contact. Not always, but a good thing to check.

ETHANOL treatment by Lucas, green fluid, better than startron. No more ethanol problems. Too bad you’re not in central Florida, we’d have it running in 2 hrs.

My guess would be the carburetor has junk in it, and the jets are getting clogged! Probably from getting left outside at the store.

you should of went with dr power walk behind trimmers i used them for 15 years as a kid on my grandfather farm or any of the walk behind trimmers with honda motors on them its a shame Husqvarna don't make walk behind trimmers and lawn mowers any more hit up your local small lawn mower repair shops to see if you can find a dr or a craftsman walk behind trimmer or a toro time master make a good one so does yard max from homdepot your walk behind trimmer sounds like it has a carbortator issues or you need to adjust your carburetor

buy a big brush cutter SRM 520es echo is much faster than that. if you do buy this always try to walk forward keeping it eating grass. going back and forward and side to side is all wasting time. Same with any grass cutting equipment, always be cutting new grass not going back over stuff you have already cut.

I have a Cub Cadet wheeled string trimmer that sits out and usually never takes over 2 to 3 pulls at the worst if I run it out of fuel and try to restart it, But after that 1 pull and it’s running. The Cub is offset to the left for close trimming and will not bog down after destroying cable tv coaxial cable and a air hose because they will wrap around the spindle within a nanosecond and one of the only instances of actually killing the engine other than releasing the handle. Really the only things that the Cub Cadet will not cut are smaller woody stalks due to the trimmer strings breaking which is totally understandable. My only wish is that my mower would be self propelled like some of the upper end DR string trimmers are and be able to swap out the string for the brush cutting saw blade. My Cub Cadet was my first experience with the wheeled string trimmers, So this was a learning experience for me. So sorry to hear about your terrible experience with your trimmer because I would be very angry like you were. My only real concern with my trimmer was the Chinese engine that looks like a knockoff Kohler engine to me, But So Far,So Good.

The engine speed is too low. You need to adjust the throttle cable at the engine by loosening the cable clamp and pulling the cable out as far as possible before tightening the clamp back. It should sound just like your mower's engine when it's at full speed. In other words the throttle is not opening up all the way.

DR trimmer/mower are pretty expensive and made- in - American. I prefer to spending $1 thousands dollars for DR trimmer mower high wheels with a Beaver Blades chainsaw attachment and bigger engine of 8 horsepower 4 cycle without adding oil gas together in the mower and using a battery key started without damaging my shoulder and arm.

Does it have an oil level sensor? It might not be that sophisticated, but even with full oil, those sensors are known to be faulty or of the box. But you have spark...hmmm I vote crappy carburetors...plastic parts, non adjustable, and the factory may have done a 2 minute run in at the factory, boxed it up in China, shipped it, it sat, and sat, and sat. Home Depot takes receipt, doesn't run it, a couple of nontrained floor associates put bolt A in Hole 1...and there it sits. It's new, right? Not necessarily.
