I have one of these. Accidentally go to close to my well and the strings hit one of the PVC pipes and cut it clean in half. Water started spewing everywhere. I could not believe it. Thankfully a neighbor had a piece that he fixed it with for me. I love this mower. I could not maintain my property without it. I call it The Beast.

@@GoosePondHideoutWithRob no. It was not fun at all. My neighbor made quick work of my disaster, though. I have been out mowing with it today. I moved onto a half acre that about a quarter or so of it had never been cleared and what had been cleared was a disaster. The uncleared part is covered in invasive potato vine. I waited till it went dormant and took that Cub Cadet out there. Now I have to dig the potatoes out as it's the only way to stop it. The Cub Cadet keeps the vines under control in the meantime.

I have this - so amazed at what this machine can do. It even works in the rain (misting and soft rain) it still gets the job done. Using this machine is easy, and so much cleaner than using a string trimmer. It tackles weeds and grass like butter.

Ive had the Craftsman version of this trimmer in my junk pile for almost a decade, never used it, got it for free. Just bought some property that was overgrown, saw your video which gave me ideas, and brought the Craftsman out of the junk pile. All it needed was one of those $9 eBay carburetors, and it runs perfect. I agree, these things are awesome and way more capable than you would think just by looking at them.

I've had one of these for almost 2 years and it has been the best. When I pull it out for the first mowing session of the year, it takes two pulls to get it started. After that, it starts on the first pull. It's a beast when it comes to cutting grass and tall, thick weeds. Happy with my purchase.

I am glad that I found this video. I have been dabbling with ways to mow the side yard (about 1/3 acre) for months now. Were in the mountains and there are so many rocks and stones in the yard which is killing my mower blades. This thing will do EXACTLY what i need without putting me in the poor house. Thanks for the write up brother.

Glad to help out. Our property is fairly level, but it has rocks roots and holes. I have our regular mower set as high as it goes or the blade gets dinged and bent. This is really nice.
@42lookc
@42lookc 5 лет назад
We have one of these mowers at each of our properties. Cut long grass and weeds in late afternoon and early evening after the sun has dried out the dew, and it will greatly increase the ability to shear the stems, while reducing the tendency of the stems to wrap around the cutterhead. A little performance hint: almost all vertical shaft engines have been seriously detuned with the blade tip speed laws. That should be a 6 HP engine, but likely isn't making nearly that at the only 2500 engine RPM it is set at in the box. There is a small, vertical governor spring on the left side of the engine. It is attached to a little metal tab bent out horizontally from the engine. If you bend that little tab up *ever so very slightly*, you will increase the RPM's and bring it alive. Buy a cheap handheld digital tachometer on ebay and don't raise the engine speed beyond 2950-3000 RPM. That's only an 18-20% RPM increase, but the performance increase will be VERY noticeable as it brings the engine into the ballpark of its proper rated power. The aggressiveness of the cutting will increase right along with it. Your string life will naturally go down, but buy it in bulk rolls and it will still be a very economical way to manage tall grass and weeds.

Thanks for showing. I had one and really liked it. The trick with these is changing the first oil after about an hour of use, then filling with fresh. Really helps the motor last longer, IMO.
@GoosePondHideoutWithRob
@GoosePondHideoutWithRob 5 лет назад
Yes, in these simple engines it's important to change the oil frequently.
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 4 года назад
After the initial break in oil change depending on how often you use it, changing the oil once or twice a year will keep it running great forever.....if you keep fresh fuel in it and avoid that ethanol crap it'll keep starting too LOL.

Mine is three years old and still starts on first pull and I use it all the time twice a month on average. The only problem I ever had was the springs under side of the trimmer so I took those springs out and drilled a hole in the frame and put a new pulley in and the belt is tight and never spins loose like it's burning under pressure it works better then when it had springs I love it

I have the Craftsman version it works great, mine is about 20 years old, and needs a new belt and trimmer head bearings, so its now just sitting dormant in my shed. Used to use it for the ditch banks and couple areas out back that were hard to get a mower into. Did a 2 acre field a few years back with it and it had no trouble taking down 3 foot tall weeds and with one of these you don't have to worry about hitting hidden obstacles and destroying mower blades. Just used a lot of 0.155" string and a lot of gas LOL.

I'm late to this party but your opening remarks hit home as its exactly my experience here in Oz. Self-propelled machines cost $3K and up, zero-turn mowers cost over $10K (for rough terrain models). So I'm going to bite the bullet and try out this unit since it's probably about $1K (waiting for the official quote). I just need a brush cutter that doesn't break my back when I use it for 3-4 hours at a time (with bull bar handles and a full shoulder harness).

5:55 I agree. This thing is so good, I don't think I'll even use my older mower that gets clogged. Don't know why these are not used more often instead of regular mowers. I noticed that if the grass is thick it will cut most of it, but the sweep down the left over grass, and then you have to go back over it the opposite direction to get it all. Otherwise you can pivot the trimmer left and right more slowly to get it all, then I drop it down on the clumps to break them up and spread them out. I also noticed in the engine manual it is not the same, no primer, no fuel cutoff valve. String breaks pretty easily on harder items more than I'd like. At $1 each string that can get expensive, plan buying it in bulk roll size. Wish there was an option to put a wheel on the front so it glides better since some of the resistance to the push comes from the lack of a front wheel. I'd watch out for that dog, I stringed a baby rabbit hiding in the brush and it was minced meat, cuts a good 1/2 inch into flesh.
@GoosePondHideoutWithRob

The Cub ST-100 was a good trimmer until my Spindle (the item at the front the sting mounts to) sealed bearings froze up on the shaft after 14 months of light use. Cub refused to warrant the part saying it was a "wear-item", even though the trimmer has a 3-year warranty and a 2-pull start guarantee. When I asked the dealer mechanic how much I was quoted $283 dollar for parts/labor to replace the spindle/bearing unit. The trimmer only cost $319 to begin with. Needless to say, always ask what is warranted and what is not before buying. I got burned so I hope you don't.

@carguy4sp Год назад
Yes I have been burned by cub cadet warranty in the past, their warranty is useless. But what kills your bearings is mowing wet grass. Make sure you cut dry and bearings will last a lot longer.
@ditzydoo4378

@@carguy4sp What I did was disassemble the shaft, replace the bearing cassette with a like sized Timken and fitted a Zerk above the shaft sleeve so I can keep it greased. I had my brother in-law modify and weld a set of stepped plates to the bottom of the glide hub dome that had worn through. Now it works in all condition and glides along instead of the hub digging into the ground.

The only thing I don't like on this, is my homelite let's you disengage just the cutter, without shutting it off, I'm trying to see how long the homelite lasts before it dies

I have the Craftsman version, only issue is if you get too close to fences it usually will yank the string out of the trimmer head...other than that these walk behind trimmers regardless which color you get (they're all made by MTD) work great. Mine needs a new belt and trimmer head bearings unfortunately so its out of service.

I moved from the San Bernardino mountains to the hills in Banning California, and have close to an acre of land that gets direct sunlight with some insane weeds that are different than what I even dealt with in the mountains. I am paying on a John Deere ride-on mower, but I am stuck in an area now that is too steep 4 that mower and my Stihl weed eater can't even cut through the weeds and brush that I have. I even rented a Makita where they metal brush hair on it, and my weed eater had done a better job than it did but the string needs to be pulled out again every two minutes. I really need to clear my hill and it seems like this is going to be something that I am going to need to do every couple of weeks, but having trouble finding the right kind of machinery that can take care of the thick weeds and brush that I have. Not sure if I need something like this or one of those brush hog walk behind mowers. Almost every video that I have seen shows tall grass and not the kind of stubborn weeds that I have, so if anyone has any idea if this might be the kind of machinery that I might need or if it would be something else, please feel free to let me know. Thanks.

@@GoosePondHideoutWithRob Yes, thank you. I was kinda leaning towards that idea and though they can be pretty expensive, I see there are some ride on brush mowers that are incredibly expensive and most seem to be made and sold in Europe anyway. Maybe it's the old saying "you get what you pay for" kind of thing. Love this new house and the pasture like hills, and country views, but didn't know it would also cost so much at the time with all the yard maintenance to do. Oh well, it's worth it anyway.

Maybe you need a different cutting blade on your Husky mower. A disc to which a set of foldable blades is attached. Might be able to pick one up from a wrecked mower. Thanks for the demo on a brush cutter.

if you want to add 30% beast to this machine do NOT used ROUND or TWISTED .155 line, but the .155 line with at least a square edge. some higher power line has up to 10 different edges. you can mow not only high grass but anything up to and including pricker bushes without pulling the strings out

It takes time. This is my advice. Look at the things you do each day. As you are performing various tasks, ask yourself, is this moving me closer to my goal or away from my goal? If it's moving you closer do more. If it's moving you away do less.

After two years on and off - works great - best trimmer I've had. The spindle just yesterday was hard to rotate. Then I got it to start the next day, but seemed to not cut good. I think you can adjust the hight after loosening the two wingnuts on the spindle. Mine were loose. Are these wingnuts supposed to be loose or tight ? Also is that how you adjust the height ? Loosend the wing nuts on spindle and put up or down then tighten ?

Called Cub Cadet Tech Support today.They told me the vibration was due to a broken spindle.I can either take it back to the to see if I can get a refund or take it to an authorized repair shop. I am lucky ,if I had to pay for a new spindle which cost $1300.

What the review misses is having to replace the strings every 10-15min if you're cutting anything thicker than grass. Instead of spending a ton on their "pre-sized" strings you can save a good bit of money by just buying a roll of .155in heavy duty string and cutting it to size.
@GoosePondHideoutWithRob
@GoosePondHideoutWithRob 2 года назад
Please keep it in mind, this is an out of the box review. I did purchase Shakespeare Ballistic 0.155 in, a 336 ft roll and I cut it to length. Which I believe, off the top of my head, is 19 inch lengths.
@adamhart1419
@adamhart1419 2 года назад
@@GoosePondHideoutWithRob that's fair. Really, the frequent string replacement is my only complaint. Beyond that, mine starts easy, runs great, and is light enough to get in some difficult spots too big for a handheld but too tight or steep for the ride on. If someone would just make a blade attachment for it... :)

Depends, sometimes it'll rip the line out of the clips that hold the line to the trimmer head, you'll know pretty easily because it knocks the trimmer head out of balance and makes the trimmer shake. I have a Craftsman version of this, works great, but does use a lot of line, if I recall its .155" line.
