I played for almost 10 years and peaked at Plat 3 and the only times it even kind of felt like balance issues affected me at all were if one of my main champions was nerfed or buffed. The fact of the matter is that players at Plat elo and below make so many mistakes that the result of any given game is extremely unlikely to have been changed by a slight number adjustment on some champion's abilities.

For the balance conversation, I'm sure they're balancing around all elos, since games like SC2, who heavily balance towards the highest level, well, the starcraft playerbase doesn't even play the game anymore. Riot understands that, it doesnt matter that dr mundo is at 46% winrate in master+. They'd want to make it 50%, but he's already the #1 toplaner in silver, so buff that, and everyone and their mother in silver will act like a bitch forever
@jayce8978
@jayce8978 11 месяцев назад
Yeah there are multiple things about balance. First is that high elo is different from proplay. Like high elo is like challenger solo queue which is super different from coordinated proplay. Champs like akshan or talon are high elo picks but basically never seen in pro. So balancing "based on what is strong" is already not clear. On top of that, people in low elo might have no idea what is strong but they can know what is frustrating to play against. Balance in low elo is more about frustration than purely about power. Like bronze players hate playing against master yi because he just requires less mechanics and snowballs well. Master yi literally has a 47% winrate in silver but a 20% ban rate. People don't care that he is weak, they just don't want him in their games.
@Wolta
@Wolta 11 месяцев назад
I feel like they shouldn't balance based on how lower ranks play the game (if that is what they do). Feels kinda mean, but maybe gold/plat and up. I feel like if you're in iron-silver, you just need to get better at grasping how the game plays in terms of rotation, creep score, wave management and lane prio, and work on improving that instead of needing the champion they play to be strong or OP. Unless you're smurfing, I feel like in gold and up is where you learn champion mechanics, when your power spikes are, when your champion starts to be useful, are you strong early, mid or late game. That being said I personally don't like picking meta/OP picks. Just play the champs I like playing. Just gotta recognize how strong the enemy is and play accordingly.

If you balance it for pro then the game dies. It's not a matter of the games health. Its a matter of Riot's entire existence. Esports arent like normal sports. If people cant play the game, or if the game has a champion pool as static as it is in pro, then they wont watch it. They'll watch another esport around a game they can play or perceive that they can play. Because of lack of comms as well, certain things will be MUCH stronger in soloq than competitive. Imagine Nocturne ult where you can simply state where you are and what's happening vs soloq where people frantically ping where they are and at best you get that, but you still cant walk in because there's no way to know whats happening. Also champions with qualities that require your team to coordinate to do something significant to them, like yi, kayn, ezreal, etc.

The reason jungle is considered strong is because solo queue players think the junglers role is to win their lane for them ;)
@zzkoolleague9458
@zzkoolleague9458 11 месяцев назад
maybe i am wrong but your argument for jung not being strong is there isn't counterpicks like there is in lane but if there is an unplayable lane matchup someone will be down 40 cs. where in jung cant u play around the other jungs pathing and rarely be in an iso fight? I don't see jungs trading all the time in iso even contested crabs pushed waves are the ones able to move to the crab or herald or whatever objective. That aside I am hardstuck D4 so i am prolly wrong lol.
@brian3634
@brian3634 11 месяцев назад
You're 100% right. I can't speak for jungle's overall strength, but oftentimes there isn't really a simple counterpick to most junglers. If the enemy team locks in sejuani, what jungle options are there that will cause the sejuani to go 0/10? Literally none. On the flip side, if you play chogath top and the enemy picks fiora, your game is ruined.

I love the conversation at the end xD the mental part is that a lot of lower ranked players are just watching tier list this and anecdotal that and will delusionally bitch and complain regardless of anything factual. "I wouldn't even have an objective view of what is strong" is such a good way to approach it. I think league is a hard one because the difference between amazing and turbo are very very subtle and conditional. So in a vacuum people will make statements like "yi is so op because he can strait 1v5 my team" when in reality the issue comes more from the fact that in low elo the game is much slower, so something like yi has a lot more time to come online to get to a scaling point where that occurs. Things like auto canceling, ward placement over walls, ect that can have a massive impact on games, but alot to very short and small timeframes that can absolutely snowball out of control but are hard to decern in the moment and especially for players that don't know those interactions are an option. Hell I was talking with someone ranked in diamond about wave management for bot lane about the difference between hard pushing early waves for level 2 fast to create the option for an early kill if the lane has the ability to do that, and it blew his mind because he was just doing it because he saw other people doing it. When in reality if the lane doesn't have those kill options there really isn't a reason to push for level 2 and instead create a freezing opportunity especially vs an aggressive jungler that will be looking for early ganks. It's often times people do what they see without actually calculating why and in what situations that lead to these misconceptions, and I think easy access to pro play can sort of facilitate this xD Why I love this channel and the sack for strait up calling out pros for making poor decisions. A new player might watch a situation like that and come to the conclusion "well a pro did that, so that's what I should do" when in reality that couldn't be further from the truth xD

The overwatch analogy doesnt work in league where half of the player base are players that are stuck in low elo for 10 years and think their team is holding them back. In that case they actually think they know what they are talking about
@SplFEEDit
@SplFEEDit 11 месяцев назад
It still applies, those people still need to be more focused on their macro/wave management/builds/etc. rather than on what champion or role is "OP", they don't play the game properly at a fundamental level so how could they ever have a comprehension of what is genuinely overpowered? It feeds into what he was saying perfectly, he needed to improve his aim and the baseline fundamentals of the game he was playing before he could ever start worrying about what characters were "OP".
@l0gas495
@l0gas495 11 месяцев назад
@@SplFEEDit no one said that they know what they are doing. But they believe that they know what they are doing and have strong opinions that are somewhat agreed upon and reflected in stats among low elo players. If riot chose to not balance their game around those stats and opinions then they would lose a lot of their playerbase which results in a huge loss in profits. The fact of the matter is that low elo players do care about their perceived meta and general perception of what needs a nerf and what doesnt. Hence the analogy doesnt work
@ATRS2K
@ATRS2K 11 месяцев назад
@@l0gas495Overwatch and every single competitive multiplayer game is the same, there’s hardstuck low elo players everywhere that cry about balance, you could literally see examples of people crying about characters like Bastion, Symmetra, Moira, ect… very strong characters in low elo but usually extremely weak in pro competitive
@l0gas495
@l0gas495 11 месяцев назад
@@ATRS2K that is definitely true but in doms analogy a low elo overwatch player just doesnt care. As you correctly pointed out people in most comp games do actually care about the balance of their low elo games and since these people are the majority of the playerbase the balance has to evolve mainly around those players because they pay the bills

This whole segment about Dom not understanding why „low elo“ players care about balanced champs etc is just the epitome of the illness plaguing the LoL community which is this sort of elitism towards only caring about the top. Do you think players in gold, plat, emerald, diamond etc don‘t play the game more than 1 hour per day or what? Him trying to equate his experience of „trying out“ Valorant to the experience of a gold player playing LoL 5 hours per day is just insanely funny to me. Love you man, but damn this stinks of elitism.
@charlesfairbanks767
@charlesfairbanks767 11 месяцев назад
I think his argument isn't that the experience of lower elo players doesn't matter, but that at lower elo the factors influencing who wins are often more to do with the fundamentals of playing the game and the mistakes made in and out of lane phase, rather than champion balance. As an analogy, a lot of pro players play WoW, and in WoW the community often gets very bent out of shape about class balance, but one spec doing 5% more damage than another spec is a lot less impactful than someone doing 70% of the damage they could be doing if they played better - it's their fundamental gameplay performance that's preventing them from doing better, and the balance isn't as important as just focusing on improving on those fundamentals.
@kcal12
@kcal12 11 месяцев назад
@@charlesfairbanks767 I understand this of course, but to completely pretend that champion balance doesn‘t influence games in lower elos as well is almost what he was implying. Ultimately no one plays it perfectly, not even challengers. Using that same logic, why would we cater to what the challengers in NA for example have to say about balance, when compared to CN or KR solo queue, there is a level difference. So if we‘re truly seeking the creme of the creme, just CN and Korea. And while we’re at it, only the top 50, scratch that top 20, because they know what’s best. That‘s what the logic ultimately leads to. It‘s just elitism. I understand that lower elos can always improve on gameplay to bridge a gap between elo‘s, but yet to act bewildered as to why balance would matter is really not it for me.
