The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (internationally titled The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro)[6] is a 2014 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. The film was directed by Marc Webb and produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. It is the fifth theatrical Spider-Man film produced by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Entertainment, the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), and the final film in The Amazing Spider-Man series. The studio hired James Vanderbilt to write the screenplay and Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to rewrite it. The film stars Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, alongside Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti, and Sally Field. In the film, Peter Parker tries to protect his girlfriend Gwen Stacy as he investigates his parents' death while also dealing with the supervillain Electro and the return of his best friend, Harry Osborn, who is dying from a deadly genetic disease.
Development of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 began after the success of The Amazing Spider-Man. DeHaan, Giamatti, Felicity Jones, and Chris Cooper were cast between December 2012 and February 2013. Filming took place in New York City from February to June 2013. The film was released in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on May 2, 2014, in the United States with two international premieres being held between March 31 and April 10 of that year. It received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the chemistry between Stone and Garfield, action sequences, visual effects, and Hans Zimmer's musical score,[7][8] but criticized the screenplay and overabundance of plotlines.[9][10][11] Foxx's portrayal of Electro was met with mixed responses.[12] It grossed $709 million worldwide, making it the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2014.
The Amazing Spider-Man series was originally intended to continue with at least two more sequels and several spin-offs, most notably films centered on Venom and the Sinister Six. Due to the deal with Disney and Sony, all subsequent installments were canceled. Both Garfield and Foxx reprised their roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), which followed the events of this film, and linked it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe using the concept of the multiverse.[13][14]

This movie had issues... yet I felt the most invested in this one out of all the Spidey movies. Andrew and Emma were the strongest selling point easily. Andrew's my favorite Peter Parker. Tobey and Tom were so "aw shucks/cutesy" that they don't actually come off as multifaceted people who actually exist. TASM Peter was an admirable man, but he's also got a gritty/vulnerable side that's necessary for Peter Parker. Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy is my favorite love interest of ALL Spider-Man media. I always liked Gwen's personality and background in the comics way more than MJ (Gwen being raised by a upstanding officer and wanting to be a scientist make her feelings for Peter really feel natural). In TASM they gave Gwen so much likability and charisma that add made her really perfect. I loved how she was let in on Peter's secret identity and helped him save the day and was proud of his heroism. The chemistry between Andrew and Emma really sold the romance better than the Raimi or MCU movies ever did. I loved how Peter and Gwen both loved each other so much that the conflict came from both wanting the other to have a path that fulfilled them, rather than how in the Raimi films made Peter and MJ barely allowed to be shown as a couple. In TASM the feelings of love felt so real. Plus I like that both are really kind people. Both stood up to Flash when he was bullying a kid. They also had empathy for Max when he became Electro. What wasn't good about TASM2 was Harry... the direction they did with Harry was so, so bad! I actually recall thinking that him having this degenerative ailment WAS something that was very sympathetic and interesting. However, his abrupt and unconvincing shift from decent guy to pure evil with killing Gwen to spite Peter... it was forced writing for Harry to do that. Firstly, who is Harry to Peter and why should I care? His relationship with Peter is childhood friends who never saw each other in years. His feelings of betrayal didn't work. Peter and Gwen are BOTH noteworthy geneticists who cured Dr. Connors' Lizard transformation together! If anything Harry SHOULD have the two of them to come up with a cure. MAYBE then in the next film after he's become friendly with the two he could start to degenerate mentally because only the physical side-effects were taken care of. With this one film where Electro is the main antagonist... Harry's too shoehorned in.
@ericdxfan511
@ericdxfan511 Год назад
Weird you say Harry is shoehorned when the movie focuses more on him than Electro. I hated Gwen in these movies. A complete Mary Sue and them automatically just having Peter reveal his secret identity to her (which never happened in the comics) was so lazy and cheap.
@Nightman221k
@Nightman221k Год назад
@@ericdxfan511 Well, I thought it was good in general. No adaptation is like the comics. Which being honest is better in some ways, cause having 616!Mary Jane in the comics reveal decades into her comic history of ALWAYS having known he was Spidey in the comics felt like a load of crap and made her the Mary Sue since the author just retconned in stuff about her. If you ask me having the hero be upfront and reveal it to his girlfriend early on feels like something unique since it allows the audience to see a perspective that cuts the melodrama of “why didn’t he go on our date? He stood me up again!” That every single superhero/civilian couple gets stuck with.

There's an alleged scene that did not make it past storyboarding. It takes place after Max wakes up at the coroners. The first thing he does is shamble his way back to his home. There, he finds his abusive mother celebrating his death and enjoying his life insurance money. He would walk in confused and be trying to tell his mother that he is okay while she screams to get away from her. He would then go to give her a hug and end up electrocuting her. After accidentally killing his own mother, Max's headspace would make a lot more sense. I wish I could find out more, but it looks like a lot of this deleted scene discussion has been lost to the interwebs. But I do remember reading about it shortly after the movies release, alongside accurate discriptions of the Richard Parker at the grave and other cut scenes from the movie that were eventually released on dvd

While TASM2 is certainly the weakest and most flaw-filled Spider-Man movie, part of me absolutely loves watching it. Garfield & Stone, Zimmer’s music, Spidey’s suit, a lot of the action, and a bunch of moments (especially the Times Square scene, “ground rules”, Spidey saving the kid, and Aunt May’s monologue) are great. The movie itself is messy, overstuffed, cartoony (in a strange way, unlike Raimi’s films), inconsistent with both the previous film and itself, and quintessentially Un-Spidey by adding the idea that ONLY Peter could’ve been Spidey. But I still have fun with it, there’s enough to carry me through.

@@ericdxfan511They could've had Norman learn about Spiderman and want to hunt him for his blood, Harry, knowing that Peter somewhat knows him, tries to convince him to do a peaceful solution, but fails because Peter knows what happened to his parents. They could then use Norman as the Goblin, who takes the spider venom just like Harry does, but he knows that it probably won't work unlike Harry who took it believing it was the cure. Norman could die of his illness at home after having been beaten by spiderman. This gives Harry a reason to be Green OR Hobgoblin, as if Spiderman gave up the blood his father wouldn't have died. The issue I see is that this could mirror the Rami movies too closely, but they could twist it somewhat by having nobody ever find out that Norman was the Goblin, making it look like he really did only die from the illness.

The more grounded approach to Spiderman was actually a great idea since Stan Lee and Jack Kirby designed Spiderman to be the more street level superhero that deals with the villians that look more like one we might see in real life if Scifi was real. And that's why it's difficult to make Spiderman more larger than life.

The way I see the whole Peter’s DNA and the Spider thing or whatever we’re calling it is how FilmSpeak put it in his review for this movie, it was still about “will Peter become Spider-Man” but in a different way, I definitely think the Spider biting Peter and him becoming Spider-Man by chance is much better but here it’s more like “will Peter decide to be Spider-Man, will he accept it” so he could still not be Spider-Man, it’s all a part of him but it’s his decision if he’ll be that which I think is how anyone would be, I mean if anyone figured out that only they could be what they can become, it’s still their decision to actually be that or not. That’s not to say I really like this decision, the by-chance bite and how anyone could’ve been bitten is definitely better but I don’t think this is bad, I still would’ve preferred if it was left out though
@kabsageigj8941
@kabsageigj8941 Год назад
Should've shown this through Electro. It's not a spider bite but the general idea of a social outcast who accidentally gets great power is still there. They could've played up the similarities and used it to highlight that the type of person wielding the power is what ultimately matters. Of course that means turning Max into a very different, less tragic character. But seeing as his character is pretty universally hated, that wouldn't have been a bad thing.

Well, I just watched this movie for the first time last night. Despite all the criticism, I went in hoping there was some chance that this would be a hidden gem as I'd argue the first one was. About an hour in, I wanted to shut it off... That said, the movie isn't all bad, so here's what I liked: Garfield's Spider-Man/Peter is, without a doubt, the best part of this movie. I love how personable Spider-Man is in the film. They really hit the nail on the head when it comes to depicting him as the "friendly neighborhood" hero. Showing him help and cheer up that little kid, praising him for his science project. How he knows the cops by name. And will call someone by their own once he catches sight of a name tag. How he earnestly tried to diffuse the situation with Max, who he could see was just lonely and confused. Little things like that stand out and serve to make him incredibly likable. That montage of his heroics as you hear new yorkers give their opinions on him is quintessential Spider-Man and one of the best scenes in the movie. The chemistry between Peter and Gwen just puts a smile on my face in almost every one of their scenes together. The touching moment between Peter and Aunt May is another highlight. A good bit of the humor works in this movie. Spider-Man is sharp and quippy as he should be. The score is nice. The action is a mixed-bag, but there is some great stuff there, and the web-slinging shots are by far the best in any of the Spider-Man movies. Everything else is a dumpster fire. I regret being so harsh, but I'm honestly just frustrated and disappointed. The plane crash scene feels jarringly out of place, and it's lengthy to boot. The initial fight is over the top for the sake of a bombastic opening sequence. I love Spider-Man joking around, but that doesn't work so well when cars are getting absolutely decimated. Gwen's speech is laughably on the nose. Might as well put a giant neon sign above her that reads, "SHE WILL DIE." I think it could've worked if they were much more selective about the parts of the speech we heard initially. Having a greater impact when Peter goes back to it after her death. It's something this film does a lot, give us too much initial information. Leaving later scenes to carry almost none of the weight they otherwise would have. We don't feel Peter's doubt about his father because we already know Aunt May was fed a lie. Max is horribly executed. I think they should've used him to mirror Peter. A lonely, social outcast who accidentally stumbles upon great power. Then, you explore what one does with that power without the same moral compass. That could've been interesting, but no, instead, we get pathetic weirdo who is desperate for any attention or validation. It's honestly just painful to watch. In my opinion, the whole Harry plot-line is this movie's biggest failing, which really sucks given he is the reason Gwen dies. I don't actually mind him coming out of nowhere and being Peter's childhood friend. The one scene they have to rekindle their friendship is quite nice in isolation, but it doesn't match anything else he does in this movie. The next scene with them together has Harry acting like a total loose canon. They no longer seem to have any relationship as Peter feels very apprehensive around him. This could all work if there was a better setup for it. But they wanted to have their cake and eat it too. Have Peter and Harry be best friends again like no time has passed, and have Harry hate Spider-Man through a connection to Peter, so he comes across as a threat to both. It doesn't work. My proposal, the prologue scene should've been about Harry and his descent into delinquency. Go all in and make Harry a stand-out character in this movie instead of one creep among a mess of plot points. Get rid of the exposition dump when Norman was on his deathbed. We start the movie with Norman sending Harry off to boarding school and the ramifications that had on Harry. He gets in with the wrong crowd, starts drinking, and is just, in general, a miserable, broken person. Harry is bitter and resentful. As such, he's glad to be rid of his father, so Peter trying to express his sympathies and rekindle an old friendship is met with little acceptance. This way, there is a much more natural uneasiness to the later scenes. Peter cares about Harry but recognizes that this is not his same friend from a decade ago. I could go on to other plot points like Gwen and Peter's muddled romance or the grand conspiracy that plagues this film, but I think I'll stop there. Overall, this is a complete mess of a sequel. There was a good movie to be had here, but unfortunately, it's bogged down in too many plot points, ridiculously cartoony characters, and a horribly unfocused narrative.

Wow a lot of people hate FFH. I think its the weakest of the home trilogy but worst Spider-Man movie? If we're speaking in terms of writing quality I very much disagree. It's pretty tight and narratively focused. With no glaring character inconsistencies, some nice action sequences, and an entertaining villian. The plot definitely has a lot of contrivances but so do SM3 and TASM2 so I fail to see how it would rank below them.

It's one where very much the inner circle of Spidey fans take issue because it goes very very light on Spidey lore, but outside of that it was as popular as it was because it's a really well-made, satisfying film. We'll get to it. I've got lots to say and I haven't budged on my positive stance.
@kabsageigj8941
@kabsageigj8941 Год назад
@@ChannelPup I guess I can understand that. I won't deny it's the one that feels most like an MCU movie featuring Spider-Man as opposed to your typical Spider-Man story. I don't personally see that as a deal-breaker though and I do like how it explores Peter's doubt and crisis of identity as a hero. It feels like a natural result after everything that happened. Looking forward to your retrospective on it.
@MaximumSpider19

It's a combination of Peter having to learn the same lessons he learned from Homecoming (Which makes no sense, since Homecoming is about him following Stark's advice on "looking out for the little guy" while FFH focuses on him stepping out of Tony's shadow), to smaller things like him using Stark's tech to create a new suit (Even though PS4 Spidey uses Doc Ock's tech to create HIS suits).
@kabsageigj8941
@kabsageigj8941 Год назад
@MaximumSpider19 The suit complaint has always been amusing to me because I was unaware that tailoring was a key Spidey skill. Though now, I guess they can rest easy since he does make his own at the end of NWH.

Maybe have the spider blood plot is resolved not with his dad made the spiders, but Peter is the only animal hybrid to not go insane. That way Max can be an average guy at the start, with the problem being he’s a hybrid, Peter not being insane is a one in a million fluke. Edit:I just heard your Gwen idea! Needing to flee! In all fairness, anytime Peter's parents pop up in a story, things get REALLY complicated and REALLY stupid *REALLY* quick. Last time they popped up, it was revealed they were spies working for the CIA and SHIELD, and were accused of treason, then the Red Skull shows up, and things just keep getting crazier from there... So yeah... Considering this was ALL we got about his parents, we should really consider ourselves lucky that it ended where it did before it got further out of hand.

I'd take it over Homecoming too. The MCU really banks on Tom Holland being the perky little pure-heart kid in Homecoming and FFH, and for me, who wants to see Peter Parker as a realistic young man trying to make tough choices... I'll always pick Andrew's version over a version it any day.

Here's what they should have done; Instead of immediately skipping to the brighter storyline in TASM 2 They could have kept it grounded, and edgy like in the first film-But Peter wouldn't stay this way until Gwen Convinces him to change his ways As Spider-man and develop his personality. Also, Gwen and Peter won't be together as The Two villans shown in TASM2 could be changed to The Scorpion And The Sandman, And it's not till the end of the movie, Peter is granted the suit shown currently in TASM2.

I know it's not the best made movie objectively wise but I think it's the best live-action Spider-Man movie as it captures the essence of Spider-Man the best and has great theming in my opinion along with the best love interest and chemistry. And because of course the awesome suit helps but that is already been whenever he was actually being Spider-Man in the movie he was most certainly be definitive version in my opinion. I know it's not perfect but I think it's a mess yes but an underrated mess and still the best live-action movie to capture Spider-Man the best and show his powers the best as well. Of course we're all entitled to our own opinion and I respect your opinion Channel pup :-) along with everyone else of course :-) but for me personally I definitely have to say that this is my favorite live-action Spider-Man movie as far as the big Hollywood versions

I used to be one of the haters for this movie. But after No Way Home. I found a new love for this after finally getting closure with Andrews arc. The movies central theme about racing against time really hits. I will say there are many things I did not like with Peter’s parents and the whole you were destined to be Spiderman but I can overlook those things and still find a really good movie that knows when to take itself seriously and when to be comic booky

I watched the movie for the first time a few days ago. And I really didn't get where all of the hate came from until near the end. I did not like Harry Osborn as the Goblin. But that final fight with Electro was actually great, the effects looked great, the use of the electric sounds for the music was something that I really liked. Basically, I think that if they cut Osborn and kept him as something to set up the next movie along with the sinister six it would be way better. The ending where Goblin shows up for like 10 minutes so they can rush through the death of Gwen Stacy was just awful. I see what bothers people about Electro's characterization, but I liked the parasocial nature that drove him and the scene where Harry gets into the asylum and starts screaming about how he needs him which gives him the motivation to discover how to get out was good.
