The Worst Storm Of The Year Is Coming... 

Some tips from someone who not only has lived through hurricanes, has been a volunteer fire fighter and now works to help prepare and respond to disasters. Obviously evacuating if possible but if you can't. Fill buckets, bath tub and any containers with clean water while you still have power, the water can be used to flush toilets and was dishes. Shut off your gas/propane if you are staying at your house - do it outside at the supply line. When you lose power, turn off all your breakers, leave one on for a single light or outlet somewhere so you know power has come back. The reason why to turn off is that appliances can be ruined with the power surging (intermittent power, or large load, when power is restored, just turn one breaker on at a time). Secure all outdoor items. IF you have a swimming pool and no storage for chairs - throw them in the pool. Get garden hoses into storage. Tie any items you can't place securely inside to a tree, post or something. Prevent as much debris as possible from blowing up against your home. This goes for trash cans also. Make sure you have flashlights with batteries readily available, charge your cell phones now and keep them charged until you lose power. Update your family and friend contacts before and after the storm, don't wait for someone to ask if you are ok. If you weren't able to board up windows and doors, make sure you have a safe interior space in your home for the occupants, including pets - they will need you calm/be their rock. Have a go bag - this means all important documents, laptop, keys, any insurance info. flash light, etc. along with pet leash, harnesses, food for them and you, along with water, bowls, snacks etc. Please don't wait until the last minute.

As a lifelong Floridian, this one is scaring me. I usually don't get scared, but this one is definitely a monster. I'm in Melrose. We are preparing. Gas cans full for generator. We'll remove all our porch furniture and take in bird feeders. So much to do. I appreciate the fact that I can tune into your broadcast and get the honest truth delivered in a professional manner. I lived in Florida for 41 years before having to move to another state 6 years ago for my job. I finally got my parents to sell their home that they lived in for 55 years of their lives just last year, and moved them up here with me and my family. Their home that never got water in it in those 55 years flooded for the first time ever with Helene. A lot of my family and friends just lost their homes with Helene, and now I’ve got family and friends evacuating for this storm. Most have never evacuated before this one, but after Helene nobody is staying. Some don’t have homes to even stay in anyways. This storm right here could wipe out my home town of Pinellas County/Tampa Bay Area. I’m praying for everyone, Including my friends and families homes that didn’t get destroyed in the last storm. This one right here could be the one that causes them to now become homeless and lose everything. Sending my love and prayers to everyone in Florida. This is so upsetting. I hope everyone remains safe while evacuating as well.

I’ve lived in Florida my whole life and I’ve never seen a Hurricane start in the south western Gulf and become a major hurricane like this . This is rare.

I live in St Pete and what’s very concerning is the ungodly amount of debris (flying projectiles) that is still needing to get cleaned up from Helene. The dump sites are overloaded and there’s just not enough time ahead of this storm!

I'm going to risk sounding like a 34 year old stick in the mud but here it goes- I love your forecasting, coverage style and streams. But then the storm chasers come on and they're acting like children- squealing and giggling while standing in the middle of hurricane gusts while the community residents are going thru absolute heck. It feels like they're belittling the event at hand. Not all of the chasers are that way, and I know they're friends, but it comes off as very unprofessional and insensitive. Just my .02.

Yeah......... There was a time when I thought it would be great to move somewhere warm like Florida. But now that Im older and wiser the New England area is actually pretty good. We have winter but even during a blizzard... you get cozy next to the wood stove and not worry that your house will flood and blow away. Good luck down there.

As of 7:30 a.m. this morning per NOAA it's a CAT 3 with winds of 120 mph and pressure has dropped to 954 mb Please don't take any chances with this storm! I have friends all along the coast down to Punta Gorda and Spring Hill is vulnerable to power loss because almost all their power in via overhead lines Secure your property - Evac early if need be - Please help those who are elderly / disabled and please don't forget to bring your pets! Jacksonville Beach here! 40+ years but no matter how many we've been through it's always awful. Power outages and my entire condo building water was out for two days last weekend from Helene! Stay safe ALL FLORIDIANS especially our WEST COAST!! I live on the beach & Marsh here so i already know we need kayaks ready for flooding 😢

The people claiming these storms are manmade are the same ones that wouldnt admit global warming existed until they termed it climate change instead. 😂 It IS manmade, we've been saying it all along just without the conspiracy aspect 🙄

1859, 1871, 1888, 1998 (earl) all formed in southwest gulf & went into florida. Also a 1945 & 1953 storms formed near southwest gulf & entered Florida. Strengths not specified for 19th century storms but Earl was cat 3 upon landfall ( thanks to Chris Martz) for the research

Worst impacts are set to be in the Tampa region. If Milton maintains category 5 intensity to landfall, it would prompt most of Tampa to evacuate as all of downtown could be inundated with storm surge.

I’m in St Petersburg 6 blocks from the water. Got a room in Ocala and deciding later today if I’ll leave.

Ivan scared me so bad I left the State. It took 3 weeks to regain power, my roof had trees smashed into it. It was a total mess. I feel for all Floridians. You guys haven't gotten a break this year.

I need help!!!! I live in Central Florida with my two elderly parents and my sister-- I myself have health problems, so both my sister and I together are care takers to my two parents-- my dad is 87 and has dementia; my mother is 74 and has zero mobility/suffered 3 strokes this past year and a half. My sister also carries the majority of the care taking/working since my health problems arose a year ago. I'm scared for our safety, but ESPECIALLY my parents. We don't get a paycheck until Wednesday-- by then, Milton will be here and it will be too late to evacuate. I have no supplies, hardly any food, no gas in car.. I've reached out to social/community centers, Churches, Police Stations-- and there are literal WAITLISTS; too many residents reaching out/not enough hands on deck? I don't know. For Pete's sake, Fema has hardly helped North Florida from the hurricane that devastated them last week-- 120 deaths, 600 unaccounted for. I don't want that to be us. I am terrified. I never do this. This is humiliating and embarrassing-- but I need help. Please. Anything at all. So I can get some supplies, and gas up the car to evacuate... It would be a BONUS if I could also get us a hotel... I just moved to Tampa for school, and moved close to the coast because it was historically unlikely to get hit by a hurricane. Luckily I'm able to evacuate, but I worry about those who lost cars and cant evacuate, as well as those with pets and can't find hotels.

We are so lucky here in the Mid-Hudson Valley in New York state. For the most part our weather is boring. We don't even get much snow anymore. It's been a dry Summer and Fall so far too.

And it's now 125/945. ONLY 5 miles per hour from a cat 4.
