The worst Super Bowl performance was a masterpiece of ineptitude by Kerry Collins

Many players have failed to live up to expectations in the Super Bowl, but when the Giants sent Kerry Collins out against the Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV, they probably expected something better than four sacks, five turnovers, and a quarterback rating below eight. Maybe the Giants weren't ever going to beat that fearsome Baltimore defense, but Collins turning in the worst individual performance in Super Bowl history prevented us from ever finding out if they had a shot.

To be fair, he did just lead them to a 34-0 NFC Championship trouncing over the Vikes. Plus, he led the Carolina Panthers to a division title and NFC Champ game and the Titans to a 13-3 record and overall #1 playoff seed. So, he’s had some good moments in time. Also, forgot to mention a Big 10 title, Rose Bowl Victory, and undefeated season in 1994

Thank God for Terrell Davis and a historically great, probably top 3 or 4 defense ever... That D held Aaron Rodgers to 77 yards in a game that year (you hold that guy to 77 yards in a QUARTER and you're practically the Steel Curtain), and then faced Roethlisberger, Brady and regular season MVP Newton and allowed a single TD pass combined in 3 games. Pretty damn impressive...

What you do with the ball, who gets the ball, who's blitzing or staying back, where the ball is thrown, the ability to read and predict your opponents, it's like a civilized version of a war. Super Bowl 35, one of just 2 Super Bowls this millennium to feature both teams starting a Free Agent QB, the other being SB37, every other Super Bowl since featured at least 1 drafted QB (mostly Brady). Proving that drafting is more valuable than Free Agency/Trading.
@tylerlarsen1842
@tylerlarsen1842 5 лет назад
Tom Brady, the greatest player of all time. He was drafted 199th overall in 2000. Not long afterwards, he went up to Robert Kraft, owner of the Patriots, and said to Kraft's face that drafting him was the best decision the franchise ever made. Prophetic and bold. After Brady got the starting job in the third game of 2001 due to Drew Bledsoe's injuries, he's led the team to 16 division titles, 12 conference championship game appearances, 8 Super Bowl appearances and 5 Super Bowl victories. He's won more games than any other QB in the history of the game, is top 5 in every positive stat category, and has a supermodel as his wife. He's the oldest QB to win the Super Bowl (39 years old, Super Bowl LI), and the oldest QB to appear in a Super Bowl (40 years old, Super Bowl LII). His longevity and his consistency throughout his entire career is unprecedented. Not just the GOAT, but the greatest draft steal ever. He made the 30 teams who didn't give him a chance pay the price.

@@asodimu213 OK, listen. I live in Northern New Hampshire. And i can honestly tell you, in my entire life before 2001, there was legit ONE Patriots fan in this town, who admitted it. He painted a POS white car ALL Patriots logos, slogans and stuff. He'd enter it in the parade and everyone laughed at him. I grew up in a Steelers house. I fell in love with my Raiders at a very young age. I saw cable television for the first time when we moved into town when i was 7 years old. We had a young RB name Napoleon Kaufman #26. I was SO young, i thought Jeff George was a GOOD QB LMAO. Cuz he could SLING it! Tim Brown was a god to me. My parents got me my first Raiders Jersey when i was 12 years old, a black and silver #24 Charles Woodson jersey. I got LAUGHED at in school for it. ALL the other kids were Packers, Cowboys, Broncos, Titans fans. My best friend is a 9ers fan, so we got along haha. Anyway, there were ZERO Patriots fans in the surrounding 4 schools, except for Glenn Raymond and his four sons. That was IT. This one rich kid always had new jerseys. He was rockin a McNabb jersey in 2000, and in 01 he had a black n white Vick jersey. It WAS a sick jersey lol. Anyway, the "Fuck Rule Game". I come to school in my worn out, silver alternate Tim Brown jersey. I walk into the gym before 1st period bell, where everyone chilled. HALF THE SCHOOL had brought out the OLDEST, thrift shop, moth eaten sweaters, shirts, fucking ANYTHING Patriots they could drag in. BULLSHIT! AND they had the NERVE to pick on ME! THE ONLY LOYAL fan in the whole northern part of the STATE! Still so fucking mad about that fucking call. And i've had to watch Brady win FIVE!!! GRRRRRR! SO YA, where I LIVE, which, by the way, is PATRIOTS LAND, there were NO Pats fans here, till they won. And NO, not even when they made it in 96 dude, it was ALL GB, Favre jersey wearing "fans" here.

Kerry Collins is one of those players in history that just fascinate me at the position. This is a guy who helped an expansion team go to the NFC Championship (Carolina Panthers) then went to his coach, told him his heart wasnt into the sport and that he felt he couldn't play due to a battle with alcoholism. Then he beat out Ken Graham late in the year with the Giants the year prior to this superbowl, took the Giants to the big game in style, then imploded. The next year, he set a record for 23 fumbles. The year after that, he set a then Giants record for passing yards (broken by Eli's 2nd superbowl season) and still has many records for the club including the only perfect passer rating in a game, set in 02 as well. Giants move on with Warner and then rookie Eli, and Collins finds himself in the Black Hole when it was becoming *the Black Hole* swallowing players careers and spitting them up. Goes to the Titans, plays terrible, loses job to Vince Young who was looking like a phenom. Vince later gets hurt, Collins leads a 13-3 squad. Demands to be a starter if he returns, does so, the team in general is just terrible (leading to another SB Nation video on the worst blowout a 59-0 loss) for weeks on end. Vince returns, puts up enough film to get everyones hopes up, Collins calls it quits. Decides to come back as an insurance policy if ironman Peyton Manning doesnt return from neck surgery, who obviously didnt, gets concussed end of career. This is a guy who statistically, not impressive. This is a guy who on film, not that impressive. And yet he kept finding ways into the spotlight. So fascinating.

Yeah but he still brought the worst performance of his career here. He didn't bring any of his positive attributes that day: didn't hang in the pocket well, didn't throw good balls while the pocket was collapsing, couldn't accurately dump passes to runningbacks in the flats while drifting backwards away from pressure, didn't protect the ball, didn't throw the ball accurately downfield (except for one pass that a defender got a pinky on). Maybe the Ravens were just that good at disguising coverages, but he made a lot of bad throws in situations where he actually had pretty good protection, which happened more often than people realize.

Collins was a journeyman who had a career year and played well in the playoffs until that point. There's no reason Payton/Fassel shouldn't have run Tiki Barber more, no matter how well the Ravens' reputation was against the run. I have a feeling that, starting with the coaches and going down through Collins, the Giants were just a little afraid of the hype of the Ravens defense
@mytwosense9135
@mytwosense9135 5 лет назад
That defense went 48 games without a 100yd rusher. That's not hype my dude, that's the absolute certainty that if they ran, they'd be even more screwed than they were with Collins.
@NYG5
@NYG5 4 года назад
There was a play where the Giants had a screen perfectly dialed up but Ray Lewis ran across the field and brought Barber down after like a 1 yard gain. If you watch the play I think Tiki slams the ball because it was so frustrating as an offensive player to have something lined up so well but some superhuman Madden play stops it. Arguably they should have went with a spread offense all game instead of the turtle offense with their slow tight ends that couldn't block up front or threaten in the passing game, and try and make the size of the Ravens interior line somewhat irrelevan, but the left side of their offensive line was weak and beat up and the center wasn't especially good either. In reality, they were planning on staying conservative and letting their defense set them up with good position but it didn't turn out that way, especially after the refs called back their pick six
