Agreed, it sucked when they tried it in survivor, it sucked when they tried it in Amazing Race (eliminated before even leaving the starting location). The only difference is those two shows actually realised it didnt work and never did them again... Big Brother doesnt seem to get it.
I have to agree. They all sucked. All of the day 1 evictees had amazing potential as players, especially Jodi. Wil Heuser said that she was a huge superfan and was one of the most dedicated. He watched her as she was counting and memorizing things around the house and that's just day one. She was already preparing herself for possible tiebreaker questions.
First night twist are designed, regardless of it results in half the house safety, someone evicted/banished, a special or broken power, etc. is designed to push to game forward/remind the houseguests they are playing a game, which result in houseguest getting safety as well as someone will be leaving the house whether it’d be night 1 or first eviction. (If the twist yields a night 1 eviction, you know a re-entry/battle back will happen to balance out the overall time flow of the game) A lot of the effectiveness depend on the actual result produced, the aftermath/fallout of it and how it shapes the first week. (Given that Big Brother is a slower paced game due to both length, amount of episodes, and even live feeds, a little push isn’t bad and even can be conducive. Sometimes it can yield a power struggle between two or more sides. Other times, it can yield pitfalls, like more unnecessary controversy than anticipated or create dominant power that strangleholds the house unless said power gets so power drunk that they turn on each other and create a messy situation both good and bad. Had this season recreated a power struggle between two side like last season and had someone in the Gr8ful (specifically someone that came in the later Six Shooters) got evicted and placed in camp comeback, then the story (Unless Cliff makes to the end) would have been at least a little different. It was clear that Big Brother wanted to more experimental with twist in some regards, but it create more pitfalls than I think they were hoping for.
All the twists failed this season. Each and EVERY one of them. Camp comeback, Americas field trip, the whacktivity competitions..... the only thing accomplished was analyse got to wear a chicken suit. A JOKE! 😅
They definitely were not THAT bad, personally I didn’t like Camp Comeback but the whacktivity powers could have been used better for sure. And America’s Field Trip I just purely loved because Michie won and Christie got oofed.
the fake house guest twist was so rude. anyone who had allied themselves with Anthony had just lost an ally, and a number that they were previously probably relying on. so it kinda just gave the shaft to whoever he was allied with.
The point of that twist to create a second Veto comp as a complimentary twist to give whoever, especially the third nominee by losing the HoH comp (Johnathan in this case), was on the block another shot at safety to prevent from being the first real houseguest evicted. However, it was very badly executed on Big Brother’s part. (Note: Mooch has stressed that he didn’t quit and had some awareness of this prior to stepping a foot into the house. However, he also indicated in some interviews that he was keep in the dark about a lot of it. As I said, this could have somewhat effective but get botched on the execution on the Big Brother)
Sometimes even the veto won't keep you safe 1 week later However, just because you are evicted doesn't mean you are out of the game 1 week later Everyone might be scrambling for the rest of this game.
I find it hilarious that Paul got the round trip ticket, and that's exactly what he had - His big brother experience wasn't a one way road, he went right back in after he lost.
Battle of the Block had so much potential, but it was Derrick that figured out how to exploit it. Giving credit where it's due, I think Derrick manipulating the BotB was what made him such a dominant player in BB16
1000000000% this was briefly mentioned but was easily the worst twist. immediately set his game up for the rest of the season. But lets be honest. thats what they wanted.
twists have had an awful failure history lately. Here are some recent twists that have completely flopped: -round trip ticket -tree of temptation -bonus life -the cloud -identity theft -bb20 battleback -power of the publicist -safety competition -nightmare power -camp comeback -chaos power -panic power -America’s field trip -America’s prankster maybe it’s a sign
@@loganhall5978 Yeah. Ovi's power wasn't that good and it wasn't used. Jack's power didn't really benefit him at all when he used it, and Christie's power was not that good either and it also did not get used. This also kinda played out with the Den of Temptation and Big Brother app store.
Razar Lamps yeah, but they didn’t screw over the game. I liked America’s field trip because it gave Christie a reality check. And camp comeback was pretty good
Imagine: Victor gets evicted third like normal Get evicted again but WITH the round-trip Gets evicted into Jury Wins Battle Back Gets evicted again. So basically, he could’ve gotten evicted FOUR times!
The pendant of protection, the super safety suit, the cloud app, Dan Gheesling’s deal with Ollie...wait what? Whatever the case, America granting a player safety is just not a good twist.
Tiffany Sox you can get the idea and appeal of having BotB. However, It got badly exploited in season 16. Season 17 was better with it, and despite it forming and boosting Johnny Mac’s game, it ran into similar pitfalls, especially when Jackie got de-throned and unable to backdoor Austin.. If they think it a bright idea to bring this back to try again, they need to modify this to where the de-throned HoH becomes a third nominee to better enforce someone can go from HoH to evicted. Likely, not going to happen. First night evictions do suck, but can cause a wake up call to the rest of the houseguest never get comfortable. The only causality I am okay with this is Glen, whether as a team or solo, he lost a total of four straight comps to result in eviction. Since season 18, I noticed they will add a battle back as a complimentary twist to enable this person a chance to get back and play the game and not messed up time flow of the game too much in order to have at least one double eviction in a season.
This video spoke to me. Thank you for basically explaining why Derrick's game is overrated. Battle of the Block is easily my least favorite twist but everything you said here was bang on. P.S. I low-key love seeing that shot of Cliff and Nicole on the block together knowing that they're both in the final four with all of the people who treated them like crap being gone. P.P.S. The one good think about the MVP twist is that is exposed Rachel Reilly fans' intelligence when they accidentally put Elissa on the block.
I view Derrick as a future Danielle Reyes. Danielle was considered the best female BB player before all stars, but she's not generally included in best BB player ever lists anymore for good reason. Danielle never had to play from the bottom in BB3 since she was never nominated, Derrick is in the same boat. Other BB legends like Dr. Will, Dan, & Vanessa have proven they can play from the top and the bottom.
@@oliverstvchannel6442 You pretty much counteracted your own statement. Derrick's game was flawless because of the twist. In other words, you can't give him personal credit for it. Any fairly strategic, manipulative player (i.e. Dan, Will, Danielle, Vanessa, etc.) could have easily manipulated a nearly season-long twist like that to the degree it did. Heck, the twist is why he was able to avoid the block by putting stronger players in front of him. Derrick's game isn't even top five of all time. Best winner to date? Ha. Dan and Will are still leagues ahead of him.
@@shadowninja6689 I'm only half with you. Derrick's game has not and will continue to not age well. Danielle is still one of the best ever. Anyone who has dropped her from their list has done so more due to recency bias; not because her game hasn't aged well.
The twist in CBB2 that absolutely screwed over Jonathan Bennett where the winning pair would compete in their own comp and the loser of that comp would be a third nominee.....after winning a challenge. So so ridiculous and unnecessary.
The point of the fake houseguest twist to offer the nominee specifically the person who lost and become third nominee, Bennett in this case, another chance at staying safe. It was meant to a complimentary twist. However, the execution was “Yikes!”
I really hated the twist in BBCan with the Angel/Devil vote as well as the international HGs. 2 people go through all the hoops and get on set to just....walk away after being there for 2 minutes sweating on stage. Arguably even worse than a day 1 eviction in my eyes. Especially considering who we got... sigh.
Camp Comeback could have been so much better if the following had been true: the evicted houseguest still left the house itself and all the jazz, yet moved into a room separate from the house entirely and could watch the comps and the ceremonies on a monitor, all while the rest of the house is unaware. Basically what Canada did a few seasons back.
Honestly, myself and every poster in this thread above and below me can produce a much better show than what BB has become over the years. The producers have absolutely no respect for their own game, and that is laughable and even pathetic. They think they have a grasp of their audience and how to draw viewers, but all of their ideas and twists and BS both drive more and more people away and also take away from the integrity of the game itself. They lose more viewers than gain new ones. Now, all that are left are the diehards who drop season by season. Between awful, lazy casting and a group of producers who think they know their audience, well, we end up with seasons that leave the audience feeling as if they wasted their time -- which is the worst thing a producer can hear. It would be my absolute pleasure to fire each and every one of them associated with this show. They deserve nothing less.
I feel like this is the second time in the last couple weeks I have seen someone incorrectly say the fans misunderstood America as the MVP and put Alyssa on the Block when they wanted her to be the MVP again. If you look at all of the polls from around that time she was in a very distant second place to be put on the Block it just so happened that the person who was in first place (Aaryn) was put on the block by the HOH and therefore ineligible to be the third nominee.
I think they need to do a season with no more games and it’s just all social with the public selecting the two houseguests that they have to vote for. And maybe the occasional prize competition.
i hated the bob but i do have to thank it for giving us the frankie winning the bob by himself. great moment and i remember when i first saw it i was freaking out
I feel as if the Hacker comp and Prankster twist are just watered down versions of Dan’s deal with Ollie. The HOH has no choice in the matter, and it feels like a cheap knockoff.
I don't think duos, cliques/groups twists are really bad if they're formed at random on night one and the people don't know each other. Especially when the people within groups start to hate each other and have to work together through the drama. ... duos/groups twists are DUMB when the people DO know each other and don't actually have to play together, it just forms an unfair advantage (cough cough Christine and Tommy)
@@DevinEDB an icon that constantly bashes Kemi and David, talks to the cameras all day long in desperate attempt to get AFP instead of helping around the house, just ruined the perfect blindside and game winning move by making Nicole overly paranoid of Tommy, threw Nicole UTB and does everything Snacks tells him to do 🤡
I think Camp Comeback had potential, especially since someone returned right away and still got to strategize, however it ultimately ended up blowing up in its own face. I do agree it made people overly friendly though. Also, I wasn't a fan of the camp counselor.
One random twist not mentioned in any of the videos - BB10 and Dan's Jury vacation twist. Its forgotten as Dan basically had it in the bag even without it but it doesnt mean it isnt a bad twist wedged into a season that was mostly twist-free. Its a total misfire of a twist thats pushed aside into a broom cupboard almost as soon as it appears.
The camp counselor shit was stupid. I know this is not the first time they've had a first night eviction, but this one feels extra unfair. The worst one in my opinion is Paul though. He was fun to watch and all but... THREE WEEKS OF SAFETY? JUST FOR EXISTING?!
Competitive reality TV shows won't even survive without a twist or two. Especially for Big Brother, which lacks clear story line producers can somehow push via post editing. Being successful or not, at least the producers are constantly trying new things, and I'm grateful for season after season of BB to watch, twists to love or hate, the emotional roller coaster of it all. A twist-free BB will become the end of the franchise. No one is gonna watch those same old type casts playing the exact same old game with nothing changed. Maybe a pipe dream version on Patreon with hand-picked players only, but not on CBS at least.
Angelo Wong The closet to this happening was the first season of The US version, and they alter the format adding a competition element to it the next season and every season after. Actually, even the first season had a twist to it (before they were called that) to offer a temptation that if accepted, would have added the another houseguest named Beth in the house to play.
The Coup d’Etat was the most BS twist ever like it’s just not fair because the instant nominees can’t even fight for Veto like i thought it was unfair in BB 11 and I completely lost it in BB Can 3
After stewing on this, I thought of a few things for both the Hacker Comp and Jeff’s Coup de tat Hacker Comp- my biggest issue with the Hacker comp is that impeded the current and main twist of season 20 of the App Store/Power Apps. Instead, I wish, albeit still overpowered, the Hacker comp was more a complimentary twist to the App Store. Specifically, the winner would been able to hack into the App Store and both granted one houseguest of their choice, including themselves, a power app and inflicting a crap app to one houseguest of their choice, including themselves. Unlike the App Store, the hacker could grant an app to a houseguest that already received one. Ironically, modifying the Hacker Comp in this way, IMO, would somewhat yield similar eviction results prior to the battle back (Scottie still returning) as if there were no Hacker comp as, after Bayleigh, I think Angela, Faysal, and Scottie would all been evicted by either scenario but done by different order and means. (Note: Courtesy of the Whactivity comp twist and a major of doing it in the first place, you can figure what the Re-Draw and Upgrade power apps were.) Coup de tat- I mentioned that Pandora’s box to return the duos twist BBUS13 may have not have been necessary since I could still see Porsche and Rachel in the end without that. When think about, had Jeff not used his coup de tat, I could still realistically see Jordan and Natalie in the end with Jordan winning but in a different eviction order.
I think if they made Camp Comeback something like a vote system - where houseguests have to vote for who they want to keep - then you actually allow people's social games to speak for themselves, rather than making it a little luck based with a comp. You'd have to give an extra week after the last person is evicted before allowing a vote, but this would let us see people campaign to be kept, and see how they navigate the house to stay. It also gives everybody a fighting chance, and allows tempers to build over time - making for good big brother.
@@janetwelling372 but why would you do that during pre-jury? Also, could do it from the perspective of 1 time twist, and don't tell the houseguests that it's a vote rather than a comp.
@@Charles-if4ty You'd do it cause you don't want someone anger at you coming back in. Think of the battle of the block how many times Caleb was willing to be on the block because He believed his people had his back and they did. One time twist it could work :)
I hated the Hacker Twist so much. It completely ruined the point of even having an HOH. Battle of the Block is awful too and possibly the worst twist ever as well. The number 1 spot still has to go to the Coup E'tat that twist is so stupid and unnecessary to the game Edit: Battle of the Block is also terrible and in discussion for worst twist after these two
IMO, there is a tier of the worst twists in reality TV history, that I'd put in the "joke tier", so-named because they have the potential to turn their whole seasons into a joke: - BBCAN1's buyback - America's Player - Edge of Extinction
@@SunlitSonata14272 Right. It only applied to one player, but it put that player in a ludicrously difficult position. So either the player will be good enough to navigate it, and will likely be controlling the house in favor of America's favorites, or they won't be good enough and get evicted. So AP was pretty much either destined to be a dud or to make the whole season a joke.
They should add a button to the house that says "DO NOT TOUCH" that does absolutely nothing and not tell the house guests. It would be hilarious to see them sweat over what might happen because they pressed the button.
It allows BB to INFLUENCE the game without actually fixing it. But, some powers are pure fixes.Replacing HOH choices and making their week useless is perfect example.
Day 1 evictions are essentially just bullying. We see someone who's been chosen for this awesome opportunity get that ripped away on national television. Even if it wasn't a life-long dream or anything, it's still gotta be embarrassing. Someone's embarrassment being used as "good TV" just feels yucky.
I know I'm commenting super late and no one will probably see this but I just recently got back into BB and all these videos are showing up on my recommended page lol.
BOTB is not a good twist... However, one of my favourite moments EVER was when Frankie won the competition by himself. Caleb shot himself in the foot and he looked really stupid while doing it.
SoViEt UnIoN Actually, had Ika kept Paul and Heather off the block during her HoH reign, she might have survived 5-4 though getting backdoored, even with the letter shredding. Reason: Paul would have been with, courtesy of Andrew and/or Kenny with her, and I don’t think the house would have passed up on another chance to get Paul out.
SoViEt UnIoN in light of the actual events, taking the 5,000 wasn’t so dumb as she was sol (The First Five had the votes) when she got backdoored. In addition to “making good tv”, her moment in BBCan is the reason why I got into BBCan.
SoViEt UnIoN I agree. Actually, had Ika listened to Neda and Adel and put up Andrew and Kenny to ensure one of them going, I can see Ika not only surviving the next round when would get backdoored and shredded the letters (since she kept and Paul and Heather for just one week longer) but possibly making to the end with Jon. However, I think she would had lost to him either 5-2 or 4-3 (not sure where Neda would have voted between those two) with the jury citing the letter shredding amongst her questionable decisions made through the game.
DuckKnight actually, that could work since giving all evicted houseguest a chance to make jury would yield a net positive. Unlike Survivor when they return players, Big Brother typically put their return/battle back winner, usually no later than 8, to allow at least some time and opportunity to earn their keep and chance at winning to some degree. Even when Gary returned at 5 BBCan1 , he won the necessary comp to stay in the house, played enough social and strategic to both gain jury favor and avoid re-eviction, and correctly took the one person he could beat to the end. How Gary lost sucks and is why Canada stresses to jury they are voting for the person to win and make sure they are grabbing the right vote when they cast it.
Anything that has America give power to houseguests scares me. Yes, I want my favorite to be in power, but if there's an overwhelming majority giving power to one person, production just breaks your heart and they're out the next week.
It’s crazy because season 21 is the only season I’ve never watched. I didn’t care for it when I clearly saw the prejudice and stereotypical cast they reverted back to. Hoping they find a more diverse cast for the new season.
I think the twists should focus more on harming the players’ gameplay rather than powering them up for barely any reason. Something like the Roadkill challenge but instead the person who does the worst gets some kind of punishment. They could start wuth dumb things like having to be on slop for two weeks or having to wear a silly costume and then gradually escalate them into more punishing ones like not being eligible for the next weeks HoH or being isolated from the rest of the cast a day prior to voting or losing your vote for the week. These sort of punishment based twists allow the players to strategize around them which makes the game more interesting and forces the punished player to be creative on how to work around it.
