The Wrestler is one of the most depressing movies I've ever seen, but it's also one of my favorite movies of all time. It's beautifully shot and put together, not to mention Mickey Rourke's stellar performance. I've recommended this movie to both fans of wrestling and fans of cinema. I think it's a masterpiece and I'm glad to see it finally getting a review on this channel.

From what I've read, Roddy Piper was deeply moved by the Wrestler. He even cried. Also, Jericho and Steamboat worked on the House Show circuit in 2009. In one match, they were wrestling in one of Steamboat's backyards, so Jericho changed the finish on the fly and whispered to Steamboat: "WrestleMania III Finish" so Steamboat would win the match in front of what was effectively a hometown crowd. This further proves that Y2J is one of the wrestling greats.

my uncle worked EMT in the new orleans area in the late 70s-mid-80s, so he covered a LOT of wrestling shows.. by the time the 90s came around, when me and my brother started getting in to wrestling, he took every opportunity to shit on the business. He told us about blading, how they'd fake 'branding' people, how they fake certain moves, or explained that if certain moves really happened that guy would "be dead". He mentioned meeting Hogan and a few others, in passing, and that they were good people, not the characters. Like if they were a heel, he'd be like "no he's actually a nice guy." I'll never really understand why he had as much contempt for the business as he did. But looking back, it feels like if he thought there was the tiniest spark of interest, he had to extinguish it.

I have a relative who is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the organization that votes on the Academy Awards) and it can be pretty political. Mickey being involved in a match at Wrestlemania absolutely would have hurt his chances at winning an Oscar. Hollywood looks at wrestling like a freak show. This was also before Rock become the a box office juggernaut and Batista started earning praise as a character actor. I really think had The Wrestler not gotten such high praise among moviegoers, it wouldn't have even been nominated for anything. The movie itself reminds me of when Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon blew up like it did. It was a Wushu movie which had very little respect as a genre in Hollywood. But audiences loved it so much that it became revered in Hollywood.

And don't forget, this is the same industry where directors and producers have parties and give away tens of thousands of dollars in free stuff to the Voters just to win their favor. @skippythealien9627
@skippythealien9627 2 года назад
it's so interesting you mention this because it's 100% plausible. Sean Penn was long despised by a lot in the Academy because he always always skipped these award shows...but even he won Best Actor ahead of Rourke and you're absolutely right. I can't help but think it's because of the way wrestling was perceived by "high brow" culture at the time. You don't have to like his movies (i'm well past the age most of his films are intended for), but you can't deny that Dwayne Johnson busted his ass to become more than just a sideshow in the movie industry...and while Batista and Cena are really good actors too, Rock definitely paved a huge path for them to be successful

Because guys like Lance Storm, Jim Cornette, Bret Hart, and the like are successful in retirement, and not because they left professional wrestling and became used car salesmen. Storm isn't even that physically broken down. They can still show up at events and have plenty of fans happy to see them. Bruno Sammartino hadn't been shown or mentioned by WWE on any program for two decades and still drew five hundred people to an ROH meet and greet. Not a WWE fan concession, not a TNA "backstage" access, an ROH meet and greet. You know, if Randy The Ram really was a Jake Roberts equivalent. That said, Roberts did go through a pretty dramatic downward spiral, as did Scott Hall, Dynamite Kid and several others. In some cases worse than what was depicted from the movie from a private, financial, legal and physical perspective. But it's not so accurate in how the public would treat someone if they really were a territorial era star. Dynamite Kid was/is a violent sociopath confined to a wheel chair, but people still like seeing him if he so indulges them. Also, if Ram was truly a big territorial star and wasn't comfortable with garbage wrestling, he'd have the pull to not do it, even in a garbage central promotion like CZW. Especially if it was a one off appearance. Yes, the plot dictated he suffer from being out of his comfort zone, but those might have been the two biggest inaccuracies in the movie. True, garbage matches did help break down Chris Benoit, but Benoit was psychologically comfortable in those. I'm not implying The Wrestler was a bad movie. I can just understand why someone who loved working professional wrestling and retired either happy or financially secure, possibly both, would find the movie insulting. My beloved profession is finally getting some mainstream press again, good press at that. WWE isn't even involved, maybe someone else deserving will be propped up. It's a long time coming! Good God what was that? He's stalking a stripper? We're aren't getting good press, we're getting pity! How dare you?

In real life, he'd get a WWE Legend's Contract (as he seemed to be former WWE SuperStar). And maybe be a producer or work at the Performance Center. Big strong guy like him, probably could've worked construction or something and made more money. Unfortunately the tale is true, like any athlete, he made his money and spent his money. It happened to Ric Flair, one of the biggest stars of all-time. Flair didn't wrestle as long as he did for fun, he had too, which is why most fans memory of him is as an old jiggly man, and not the man form the 80s and 90s. Smartest advice for any athlete, save half your money, no matter what, if you make $3 million in career, save $1.5 million (yes, pay your taxes), then you can retire with dignity, buy a small restaurant or bar and live a simple life, where you own your home and car. Never assume you'll be the next Rock, Stone Cold or John Cena. Great movie. Tragic, but great.

1. There's no such thing as a WWE Legend's Contract, it's a myth 2. He wasn't a former WWW star, he worked and was known exclusively from the indy promotions. Great advice on money saving for athletes

@@meciocio The Legend's Contracts don't pay normal, it just gives WWE the rights to merchandise a SuperStar and prevents them from appearing at rival Promotions. The character was based on many, but mainly on former WWE & WCW star Jake "The Snake" Roberts, so a major WWE SuperStar who got lost in drugs and alcohol, lost touch with daughter and still wrestled on the indies long after he was done.

@The Dude Abides His heyday was the 80s, so either WWE, NWA/WCW or AWA, especially since he had a video game. He's basically Jake "The Snake" Roberts.

This film hits hard not because of the brutality it depicts, but because of the reality. It's not afraid of showing (most of it) as it is, how it is so hard for some people who were on the top to let go of the past and to try to be somebody after all the glory days had passed. In fact you can remove the wrestling aspect and it still be a story about somebody unable to move on. Great review as always.

"The only place I get hurt is out there. The world don't give a sh*t about me." Stripper proved him right as she bounced immediately after.
