The WRONG Way to Measure Thyroid Weight Loss

Using a scale is one of the biggest mistakes you can make as a thyroid patient trying to lose weight.
Why? Because it doesn't accurately tell you how much fat you are losing or how much muscle you are gaining.
And, for thyroid patients, this is a big problem because you should be trying to preserve muscle mass when you lose weight.
How can you accurately measure fat loss? By using these metrics:
1. Body measurements.
Because muscle mass is more dense than fat, even if you lose 5 pounds of fat and gain 5 pounds of muscle, your body will start to shrink (even though the scale will stay the same).
2. Weekly progress pictures (and a mirror).
If you are losing weight while preserving muscle, your body will not only look slimmer, you will look healthier!
When you are losing both muscle mass and fat mass simultaneously, you may take on a sickly-looking appearance.
3. Caliper testing.
Caliper testing gives you an idea of how much fat is on your body but testing your skin thickness.
4. Weekly average (using a scale).
If you want to use the scale, make sure to measure it daily and then take the average over the course of a week. This will give you a more accurate reading because it smooths out the day-to-day fluctuations from food volume, constipation, and water retention.

I use a scale but I also use a tape measure. As someone prone to carrying water weight it's a must to keep your frustration with the scale to a minimum

I can relate! I had radioactive obligation many years ago. I've been stuck and gained, aches and pains as I got older. I'll be 70 in Aug this year. I've started carnivore Jan 1st this year after struggling on keto for several years. Lost inches pounds are slow to come off. But aches are gone psoriasis gone constipation gone I feel better than I have in 40 years!! Also synthroid reduced to .125 from .175. only concern is still occasional feel hyperthyroid. Yearly labs show high,"normal" TSH and low "normal" free t 4. The only thing she tests for thyroid :(

I had a Thyroidectomy due to Graves. My weight has stayed exactly the same regardless of what I do. I’m not happy with it as I believe I am insulin resistant. My triglycerides are elevated as is my ALP. The rest of my liver numbers are great, as is my cholesterol. I believe I’ve been insulin resistant for years but it was masked by being hyperthyroid. I had off the charts Free T3 and stopped losing weight, so that didn’t make sense at all. Diabetes is on both sides of my family. What can I do to help this until I can see my doctor in a few weeks? I tried Berberine but it lowered my FT3 and FT4 from optimal to mid range.

I don't just use a scale I also use my pant size. Any given day I will be in between a 18 and 24, when I should be in a size 6-8. One day a 24 the next day 18, the next 22. Also, I use the distance between my stomach and the steering wheel when I drive, with the length of my legs. Some days I can not reach pedals to drive where I need because stomach to large others there is a half inch gap between steering wheel. Monday I may not be able to drive anywhere because stomach is so big, Wednesday may be a half inch to one inch gap, Thursday stomach is just touching, Friday another half inch gap, Sat can't reach pedals to drive where I need to go repeat any of the above on any given day, but also that coincides with my pants size. Always the pants. But scales also reflect this yo-yo. Oh, there have been random times my weight has broke the steps on my deck as I am going down them. That is really fun and caused long term back issues and most recently torn ligaments in my knee. This same issue has been going on for four years. After four years of the same thing, writing things down trying to find the link and none it gets frustrating. Most of mine I have noticed my weight goes up the more diereah I have and I have that a lot.

I have a body comp scale. My body fat went up and my muscle mass dipped very very slightly. 😅 I stopped exercising because hoshimotos seems to have triggered arthritis in my bad so I've been struggling 😭. I use my pants for body measurements. Everything is getting tighter. Help!

Seems like arthritis is what's preventing you from making progress. There are some lifestyle changes to eliminate that

So are you saying someone taking medication for thyroid will gain muscle mass without an exercise routine? Does the thyroid determine muscle and fat mass? Learn something new every day!😊. Will be hard to adjust to not going on that roller coaster ride each morning…yeah, I hear the “big but” (butt) statement. If you want to get a woman’s attention, just say big butt.😅
@felisite333

you will lose weight on medication but in order to gain muscle mass you would need to incorporate at least 20g of protein a day and if you can, lift weights. as someone with a thyroid issue and have been lifting weights for 7 months, you will see progress slower if you don't exercise.
