The WS6 Trans am is a love it or hate type of car. It's also the type of car that doesn't care what you think about it. Its bold, its extreme, it's in your face and it will never apologize for it. It has the legandary LS1 which means this car will have the performance to match its looks. Now theres been many questions about what "WS6" actually means. So that's a topic we are certainly going to address in this video as well.

@@automotiveantics That I full well believe, I emphatically do NOT believe there are many 02 ws6 out there with 21k sorry lol. I got mine as my first car in 2007 and had 40k on it and currently has around 74k. What's even crazier is my folks paid 9,500 for it. Someone rolled that sucka over from 221k hahaha

@@tonymickens8803 That's funny, I really like my '00. I think if you got an ls6 block, then 01-02's are the best. But a non ls6 block Ws6 is kind of a toss up between the '01-02 and '00. Everybody knows the 01-02 got the ls6 intake, which is awesome. And a lot of people don't know that they got slightly better heads. However, the '98-00 got better Ws6 suspension parts, a better cam, a less restrictive catalytic converter, and omg better wheels. The look of the wheels is subjective (however, I think the 01-02 wheels are really ugly), but what isn't subjective is the 01-02 are flat aluminum, whereas the 98-00 were polished aluminum, making them shiny. Which I think is cool. The most noticeable thing about the Ws6 suspension differences, were the Decarbon shocks. They are all orange, no matter what year or trim level (all Trans Ams have orange Decarbons). But the 98-00 Ws6 had stiffer valving. They softened the suspension somewhat in 01-02 because the moms and dads that could afford these cars brand new were complaining that the ride was too stiff, supposedly. Anyway, sorry for the novel, but if you aren't going to change the cats or the cam (cats for legal reasons, cam bc that's a pain and a big mod), I really like the '00. Better wheels, better suspension, easier to throw an ls6 intake on it and be better than an '01-02. But if you are going to build one of these cars, '02 is probably the best. If you're going to change all the suspension parts, cam, heads, long tubes, probably aftermarket wheels, then it's better to start with an ls6 intake and have a chance at an ls6 block. Just my .02

I have a 1984 Trans Am I bought new in June of 84. I still have it . When I bought it I ordered it with the WS6 package. It's just an option code, like Z28. It came with bigger tires, stiffer springs, beefer sway bars, and four wheel disc brakes.

Nailed it. I have the dec 87 Trans am GTA ws-6 code. 5.7 limited slip, disk break rear with the 4 speed automatic transmission. The rear is a Borg Warner. Don't know the gear number but its low. Far as i know everything is original. Car is stupid stiff in these East Tennessee rolling hill's and curves. My car absolutely loves and responds to these country road's like a well built roller coaster.

I was a specialized technician at the plant where all !992 to 2002 trans am were built. It certainly wasn't the employees who named the car a WS6. Also, are you aware that we also made the "Firehawks"? A higher performance trans am that were individually numbered after they got a suspension, exhaust, wheel and other upgrades to increase engine performance by 70 to 80 hp. And yes, if you didn't purchase the car with uni directional tires, the computer locked the car at 110 mph.
@tripletransam87
@tripletransam87 Год назад
The LS1 cars (1998-2002) with the good tires were also limited, to 260 km/h (162 mph). Jacques Duval ran a '99 Firehawk with the limiter removed via a Hypertech programmer and achieved 275 km/h (172 mph) on the Blainville test track for a magazine article, I have the video of this. I have to disagree with you on the 70-80 hp increase for the Firehawks... the LT1 cars got about 20 hp more in rating (how much of it was real?) and the LS1 Firehawks were rated no more than maybe 15 hp over the equivalent WS6... chassis dyno results certainly didn't show significant improvements over the non-Firehawks, and my all original 1998 WS6 that I bought new certainly never lost a race ever to a Firehawk at Napierville Dragway. By the 90s and 00s there wasn't much room for improvement over the excellent product that was engineered by GM. I'd be inclined to think that the SLP ratings were more marketing than real improvements... even my all original 1998 Trans Am Ram Air delivered more rear wheel hp than would be expected for the 320 hp official rating. (and on an SLP dyno at the Lasalle location on top of it. :D ) You say you worked at the Boisbriand plant... I took a tour of the plant in June 1998 the same day my car (black 1998 Ram Air Trans Am 6 speed) was assembled. The tour was given by a gentleman who I think was also named Robert but I can't remember his last name. He was a thin middle-aged man, responsible for the tours in those years. Would love it if you could remember it and tell me his name. I got to spot my actual car on the assembly line while on the tour, but had to settle for riding in the passenger seat of a red 1998 Ram Air Trans Am 6 speed during the emissions check procedure at the end of the assembly process. What an incredible sound to hear the LS1 manually going through the gears at wide open throttle on the rollers in the emissions check shack! I could hardly stay on my feet when I got out of the car. Proud to still own this car, a product of chez nous!

If you cam it, I recommend keeping your stock catback/mufflers. If you must upgrade the catback, get a "touring" system. I have an 04 vette and my first upgrade was Corsa Xtremes. Car sounded amazing. Once i put longtubes on it became way too loud. Then I cammed it. Its now louder than a Harley Davidson, which is cool at first but it gets old very quickly.

I bought a 2000 WS6 new and I always thought WS6 was just the RPO Code like the Z28, so I think you are correct. When you get customers and fans making up names for RPOs you're doing something right, as people really like the car.

I'm on my third 4th gen LS1 WS6 , all modded. There are downsides to some mods , even when they work , as intended . My last car had a great Strano handling package, with Bilstein struts/shocks , progressive lowering springs , sway bars , double adjustable panhard bar & LCAs , on 18" wheels. It handled amazing , perfectly neutral , oversteer on demand, and immediate turn in. It also hit the bump stops , on some dips , and I had to be very careful, not to scrape. That's any lowered vehicle, and the suspension worked as intended , exceeding all expectations. I put Airlift drag bags in the rear springs, and all was well. The one I drive now is modded for acceleration. It has a 6.0 LS2 , forged , CNC , big cam, NO 250 shot , Yank SS3600 stall , Performabult Level II 4L65 , Moser 12 bolt , with a TruTrack posi , full suspension, relocated mounting points. Its a pita in heavy traffic, because it wants to launch. It gets a lot of fuel from the 80lb/hr FAST injectors , and it doesn't like to creep . It surges a little , on the big cam (244/246@0.050") and that hasn't been able to be tuned out . The posi locks, like a spool , with power on , so it handles a little different, when the rear slides . The stall makes it hard to modulate the throttle , to adjust slip angle , when sliding the rear. Its either unresponsive to slight throttle, or has a massive response, when you wake it up. Not much subtlety . But , its quick. It dead hooks , from a dig , foot braking . It will lift the front wheels a little . It runs mid 10s at 130. The Procharger will be going on , after the first of the year , and that may have a downside too , but , it will be fun. It will put a smile on my face. That's the one thing that never fails to work out . Eventually..

Needs shocks miner things and check rear end. I love it I'm 63 years old

I have the 2002 Trans Am WS6, Pontiacs Swan Song to their last ever Trans Am. I bought this car with 33K miles on it in 2021, it's showroom condition. I have all the papers and codes used on assembly line. Yes, WS6 is the Total Performance Package, ya..I dug deep for the meaning of the WS6 package. What I came up with was this: W= WIDE S= SUSPENSION 6= COILS For what it's worth.. this biotch SCREAMS around CORNERS, AND HANDLES GREAT. Don't be fooled, the 2002 WS6, with the Corvette Z1 packaged into the Ram Air unit, a weight of just under 3,500lbs. The 2002 Trans Ams 2nd gear power band is its Bread n Butter!! She hits 82mph in 2nd, and squaks into 3rd laced up in Mickey Thompson Street Comps, off the line this Fire Chicken more than holds its own vs any of these modern muscles! And that 2ND GEAR POWER BAND IS WHAT DOES IT. From 0-80 she runs with them all.. MODERN Muscles Ci, and more liters wins out just before that 1/4 mile marker. ( BUT, THOSE 2002 BODY LINES, AND THAT NOSE ON THE LAST FIRE CHICKEN... TURNS HEAD EVERY DAY I DRIVE IT!

nope, it’s just an RPO code. i had a 1999 black ram air as well. easy mod was to knock out the baffle in the ram air hood and install the bracket to match up to the intake to help pressurize the intake air. So, the faster you go, the more power you get! And a K&N air filter to deal with any potential water(rain) issues from removal of the baffle. there was still nostril baffles directing the air down

I have a 2001 metallic silver ws6. T tops never leaked. Terrified to take them off though. Original rubber seals. Named her The Shark 🦈. She's still a beauty and I have tons of guys trying to literally buy her out from underneath me while driving. The funny thing is they always start trying to talk to my husband about buying her! I also have guys knocking on my house door at least once a month trying to buy The Shark out of my driveway cash on the spot. This is my dream car!

As a 38 yr parts guy and 25 yrs at GM dealerships, I agree and you are correct...It's only a RPO code and the letters stand for nothing most of the time. That being said, GM people on the line did use all kinds of different nicknames to help them remember all the different options used.

I have one, the T-Tops still don't leak. You needed to put subframe connectors on to keep them from twisting from hard launches and everyone launched these cars hard. Also WS6 is only the RPO code.

I had an 01 WS6 in pewter metallic from brand new. Only real weak point was the rear dif. Broke it twice. Had an electric exhaust cutout. Now I have a 2017 Camaro 2SS 50th anniversary edition.

GM didn’t make a 12 bolt limited slip available for the TA?
@pali1H

@@markrothe5903 I'm sure they did. I was 18 and in high school. Not able to swing expensive parts on top of the cost of the car. Had the rear dif replaced under warranty. They finally stopped after 2 of them broke and voided my warranty lol.

Even Jay Leno perpetuates the WS6 "nickname" in his video on the 2002 (which he describes as "the best Firebird of all times"). I have the Formula trim (mid-level between base and Trans Am) with the WS6 designation and 6-speed manual ... I suspect this might be a bit of a unicorn. And the T-tops don't leak!

I have a 2002 TA Convertible in Maple Red Metallic. It is not a WS6 therefore it rides better and still has the LS1 motor. It is 1 of 9, the rarest color code of 2002 in a convertible and Firebird of that year.

Got my 1st ws6 last year. Yes t tops leeks. 2001 with 60,000 miles. Moter is stock. Lots of fun to drive. I like it better than the 1982 firebird i had 20 years ago that i had to sell because we just started a family.

I have a 2002 Trans Am WS6 convertible, 4 speed auto and it had 7500 original miles on it when I bought it. You are correct, WS6 is the RPO code for the optional performance package of suspension and exhaust upgrades, nothing else. Too bad GM could not give it and the Camaro a true dual exhaust and let the LS1 breathe better.

I have a regular 2000 Firebird and I wish i had gotten the WS6! I want one so bad! and...my T-tops do not leak! Never have! What does leak is my driver side door hinge is weak, therefore my door has a slight heavy angle making the window not close/ seal all the way near the front hinge of the door. Water will sneak in and drip down the top of the window/door seal.

Disk brakes only showed up in 1979. And WS6 wasn't necessarily tied to disk brakes... I have an all original 1987 WS6 car with drum rears (no rear disk RPO on the build sheet or GM's records for the car).

My 1984 Trans Am has the WY6 package which had the exact same suspension pieces as a WS6. WS6 is simply a RPO code from GM like 1LE or ZR1 or Z82.
