@@tanx2u Grant Morrison can tell an awesome story, but within his stories there's a lot of meta-content, using characters/plot elements as expy for his stances on real world events. Read "Final Crisis", "Multiversity", or his run on X-Men with the character of Kid Omega and you'll understand. 👍🏾

I really liked the whole Jean Grey resurrection mini series, what with the whole fake town filled with her dead friends and family and it's this perfect little Pleasantville, and the realization that the Phoenix can't possess Jean, she has to let it in, and she ultimately rejects the fantasy it wants to give her. And I guess I thought X-Men: Red, the direct follow-up of this storyline, was going to be a bit more personal and show us a Jean who slowly dips her toes back into the usual adventures while reconnecting with the people who mourned her. Instead, she cannon-balled into the pool and taking on the UN. It's a story that would've held more weight if it was a climactic moment instead of the beginning of an arc.

Rob, Been watching your channel now for a while, thought I'd share some quick insight. In Louisiana, when Gambit steps in to protect the other mutant, you mention he takes a stick from someone in the mob. They are actually carrying Tiki Torches. This is in reference to the Tiki Torch-wielding white nationalist protests in Charlottesville in August 2017. The author was drawing a parallel to a real-world event that, for all intents and purposes, had a similar message. Just a cool call-out, if no one has pointed that out yet. Keep up the great videos! I can't afford comics right now so you're my lifeline!

I did have a little issue with that "weaponize the truth" line in X-Men Red. I know what the intent was, but it almost seems like a political statement that says it is okay to spin and twist the facts or image of the truth to help you achieve your goals. Rather than persuasive, this message feels combative. Marvel comics have always had some political message at times, but in the past these messages were subtle, persuasive, and at least acknowledged the opposite views good points. Today's hidden messages are much more combative with an us vs them mentality, with us or against us but no middle ground. Of course this is only an opinion.

I love your videos Rob, but I have to greatly disagree with your comments on Jean being irrelevant, both pre death and while dead. I understand that personality types like Emma Frost and Monet St. Croix are popular with fans because of their lack of filter--speaking what's on their minds and "telling like it is", because that's what resonates with the younger generation of today, with these "reality" shows, where it's constant fighting and bantering back and fourth--people throwing insults and making petty comments to each other, for the sake of ratings; but all it does is just show how trite and limited they are, since it's all they have to show and offer. Jean Grey has always been relevant--she's the first lady of the X-Men, she's a woman that has literally given her life to save her family and friends--for the world itself. She's a woman that stands up for what's right and does everything she can to help anyone in need. She's selfless and a true definition of what a hero is. Even during her death, she was never forgotten; her name many times spoken of and in reverence. She's woman who does not need to belittle anyone to get her point across, instead, she puts herself in their shoes and tries to find another way to help, or to stop whatever is causing the danger to her and her teammates. She's a very respected character that in my opinion, gets better and better everyday. She's not perfect, but she's a human being who treats those as she would want to be treated.

I really like the idea of Jean Grey being the kind of X-Men leader who is a mix of Charles Xavier and post House of M Cyclops in the way of doing things. A leader who tries to do the peaceful path but is willing to do the proactive actions without resorting to violence if she could.
@timmeyer9191
@timmeyer9191 5 лет назад
@R.C. Beringuela, that was a very nice comment. I think Cyclops too would have chosen a less militaristic approach to leading if not for 3 things. 1. He was the X-Men field commander. His training/experience pushed him to think in military strategy. 2. Jean was dead. Jean was a stabilizing force in his life, and Emma Frost is a lot less compassionate. 3. House of M and the decimation of mutant kind. Cyclops was facing the extermination of mutants, and he couldn't take any chances/gambles that humanity would "do the right thing". Given these points, I think Cyclop's evolution into a Cable-like leader should have been expected.
