This gave me flashbacks to the time I tried to write a script for my Wacom tabled for funsies. I am actually grateful that most linux desktops have gui solution for this. Linux often have powerful tools like you showed, you just have to get used to the command line.

Awesome review, David. Glad my efforts with the 22R Pro helped someone. The lack of tilt support in the manufacturer's driver still shocks me. So appreciative of the work done on DigiMend drivers, hopefully the developer will be able to continue working on it in the future. But for the price I've been quite satisfied.

Thank you for noticing! I spent a lot of time scripting, filming and editing on this one; it was a totally new exercice. I felt a bit limited by my hardware, just my phone and a webcam; and filming a black device with a monitor is not easy. Something not visible: most of the shot with the monitor 'on' are using the minimal brightness of the device so the camera doesn't darkern everything around. I learnt a lot and it was a lot of fun.

@@DavidRevoy yes it is very obvious. Most RU-vid channels just put the tablet in front of them and start talking. Your video took exceptionally a lot of effort and planning. I hope it is appreciated by the watchers. Thanks David!

🔵 UPDATE: 🔵 - XP-Pen sent me a code to get 15% off while purchasing: DAVID24PRO ( USA store: bit.ly/2RFurjo , CA store: bit.ly/3utJQlz , get 1000 pesos coupon in PH store; PH: bit.ly/3eQxz5v ) Also, the code is available until May 24. - Unlike Wacom; overlays sheet looks like consumable for XPPEN; they sell them to replace on the store ( storexppen.com/buy/protective-film-24-pro.html ) - Digimend full diagnostic is published: github.com/DIGImend/digimend-kernel-drivers/issues/535 - Perfect match with my Ergotron Arm. - No magnetic noises with my Wacom Intuos4 also connected. 🔵 ERRATUM: 🔵 - 03:24 A label write "65536 level of pressure", this is probably just an address space of 64 KB (65,536 bytes) used by xinput to normalize the stream of pressure. - 04:34 I spoke about a 'Micro-USB' cable; it's in fact a 'USB-C cable'. More detailed update/Erratum on www.davidrevoy.com/article842/

@@partymetroid Yes, I have regret about this one. The box provides two cables to connect the tablet: a USB-C to USB and a USB-C to USB-C. I tested with both on Linux because my recent machine has a USB-C port. It works. I'm using right now the USB-C to USB because I could extend the lenght of the USB with an extension I had.

@@DavidRevoy apparently you can use the USB C cable to connect to a modern laptop without requiring a video cable. It didn't work on my desktop system because it requires lightning support on the USB C port.

XP-Pen got me into the digital world finally a year ago, as I couldn't afford the higher prices of other tablets. Ended up buying the xp pen innovator 16 anniversary edition and I'm very very happy with it. I thought I'll never manage to get on with the learning curve of switching from traditional painting but it was surprisingly pleasant. For a starting tablet I recommend it strongly :)

The configs you have on your website also work very nicely on arch btw! I'm so glad I found such a thorough documentation on how to make this tablet work nicely on Linux. Very nice that you can just make it get recognized as a wacom device, wouldn't have thought of that. KDE Tablet Settings didn't work on this one, but your scripts sure did, even the pen calibration is *chefs kiss* Also glad this method works as a startup script since it's device ID bound. The XP Pen tablet devices only show up when the pointer has been on the screen which is annoying when trying to use xrandr shebangs for startup. Only one thing you could add: When you have Nvidia you might need to Call your Output device differently in the script, xwacom recognizes them all as HEAD-0, HEAD-1, etc... I'm glad this exists because sometimes i have to go back to X11 since wayland is kinda on-off-ish with Krita. Sometimes it works nice, then something breaks after an update... Also advanced generic Tablet features like calibration are done but will only come in KDE 6.2, KDE being the only DE that seems to have it on the radar.

Thanks for the awesome review. Unfortunately, for Windows, there's nothing like the Digimed drivers available. We have to stick to Xp-Pen's official drivers which are VERY VERY VERY buggy and badly developed. I just got a Artist 24 Pro and I feel like returning it because of the drivers (calibration is reset all the time, shortcuts are lost, pressure bugs, etc).

Thanks about the review and that's a pity about their Windows driver. I had feedback an open source initiative started for better drivers: opentabletdriver.net/ , but unfortunately, the 24 Pro is not part of it. If the driver is disfunctional, I totally support your idea to return it. Good luck

I thought the official XP-Pen drivers were free software under the GPL License. But I tried to look for the source code or any sort of confirmation of that on their website with no luck, so I thought it was weird. I didn't know about Digimend drivers. Maybe this video will serve as a reference for XP-Pen to improve its support on Linux and maybe create a full-featured open-source driver. Is understandable that the ergonomy and quality are not too good since is a "cheap" tablet compared to Wacom. Anyway, thank you for the info and the review!

cete trop great :) i got given a xp pen tablet (no screen) as a linux user too a while ago. I had to turn it back as it was slightly slower than my sensitive touch would like, but it was feature rich and was to use. No issues with drivers both their own and the custom ones, so i just used the custom ones. May have done some tweaking for it to work, cant quite remember 😅

I dislike parallax. Other reviews seemed like it was ok. But I tend to move my head and pen angle when I draw, so parallax is always a problem. And calibration only works if my eyes stay in that position.
@DavidRevoy
@DavidRevoy 3 года назад
True, same here; and having to recalibrate each time I adopt a slightly new position is really a lot of work for not much. I found a good compromise with my pen display: I calibrate them so the center of the cursor is a bit always on bottom-left of the stylus nib (and not hidden by the nib, I dislike that too). In this case, the offset being controled and desired; it's much easier for my brain to use it. I'll never be able to trick my brain to think the stroke appears under the stylus nib. He knows it is not what really is happening. ^__^

Hi David Revoy! Thanks for posting this review about XP-Pen 24! I would like to say that I love Krita (I prefer it than Photoshop)!! I have a question: if you could choose between Huion, XP-Pen, Gaomon and Wacom, what model would you choose?
@DavidRevoy
@DavidRevoy 2 года назад
Wacom. They still have more knowledge into how to make a surface (the material) and how to manage the code part (the driver). Also, I think the little brands coming on their lawn force them to increase quality (on their Pro branded devices). The very big weak point of this 24ProXpen is really the protective film of the display. It's designed as a consumable thin sheet of plastic sticked (so, in other term, not well designed). That the type of design failure I never saw on the Wacom I tested.

@@DavidRevoy Thanks David! I'm really considering what you said. About the Xp-Pen 24 Pro display I also think its a great upgrade I would increase the drawing experience! Despite the problem of the protective film, do you think this tablet worth to buy because of the 2K resolution e the screen size?
@DavidRevoy

@@zelador1680 Yes, the 24Pro is still really good ( I spent weeks on it www.davidrevoy.com/article857/desk-setup , then reverted to my good old Intuos4 XL without display : www.davidrevoy.com/article862/desk-setup-the-return ).

easy to scratch but does it not have a protection layer on the screen out of the box?
@DavidRevoy

It has one, but it looks like it is considered like a consumable by XP-Pen. The fact they sell the protective layer by two on the shop (src. www.storexppen.com/buy/protective-film-24-pro.html ) probably is a hint this is something common on their model.

@@DavidRevoy Just confirming that the XP-Pen Artist Pro 13.3 screen protectors are pretty bad also. If you look at it funny it'll scratch and they are very noticeable. Not sure how much better Wacom's is, but it's annoying enough that I'll be looking at other brands next time.
@DavidRevoy
@DavidRevoy 2 года назад
@@Ziflinz Yep. Wacom (from the experience I had with the 22HD and 13HD; so the 2015 era cintiq devices) are doing a goood work with it. They really made good R&D for that after the 21UX and 12HD (I owned both too around 2007-2010) that was a bit too smooth. XP-Pen are still lagging 10years old in this area compare to Wacom. I heard recently the Huion shop had very good overlay transparent textures for their device, textured and not that hard to install . They come in a range from 13 inch to 22 inch (sadly, no 24 inch for my big model). I'm tempted to find a small device for traveling (like an old Surface Pro 3, fully Linux compatible including stylus) and put on the top a 13 inch Huion overlay to get a slight texture. Maybe a project when I'lll have a spare budget to play with (or when I 'll find a very cheap model on second hand market).

@@DavidRevoy Thanks for the info on the Huion overlays. I've also got a HP Spectre X360 15" with a decent stylus, but I think a smaller 13" Surface Pro with the detachable keyboard would have been much better for drawing on the go.

Serious comment though: I'm here because I wanted to know how you'd solve the driver issue. I have an XP-Pen deco 1 v2, use Mint Mate 21 and it works perfectly out of the box, tilt, pressure etc, but I'm completely unable to change the buttons and pen button as I want. The newest driver opens only when the tablet is connected and needs to be run as admin, but as soon as it opens it lacks text, images and has no box or anything that can be clicked. The driver before that one opens and has text etc, I can change how I use the tablet easily (the right/left hand mode), but I'm unable to change anything else since once I close the driver software everything resets.

Hi, thank you for your comment. It looks like you had the permission issue with the proprietary driver install as I mention in this video. I posted the workaround command line on the blog post ( www.davidrevoy.com/article842/review-of-the-xp-pen-artist-24-pro-on-linux , see Misc / proprietary driver, two command lines) so you don't have to run it as super user each time. I guess the proprietary driver is the only option for many model of their set; I had luck the 24 Pro had compatibility with previous work merged on the Digimend Free/Libre driver.

Excellent video, I'm fighting for a decision for buying such a device. I got an wacom intros 5 touch and it works perfectly fine but coming from analogue painting and drawing it might be a familiar look and feel working directly on "canvas" so to speak. Regardless, it will took a few months for me to have enough money I can spend on things who are not "necessary", so for now the old one will doe. Interesting that you are able to make it work under Linux, with some extra work and afford but finally successful. I tried this with the wacom table under manjaro but the driver wasn't stable, the user interface showed the buttons of the table once, after a reboot the touch was on again and the buttons are gone. I finally switched back to Windows 10 and proprietary drivers for the full range of functionality. It's sad, because I work with Krita, Gimp and Blender on both platforms, it wouldn't made any difference for me except I would like to work on an Linux OS.

Huion has better drawing performance. In my opinion.
@DavidRevoy
@DavidRevoy 3 года назад
Hi, I think "Drawing performances" are unrelated to the device (at least on Linux) where libinput manage them all with same frequency and same filtering/trimming of event. I have here 4 Wacom, 1 Huion and 1 XP-Pen to test it and the flow of data these devices is more than enough to not feel one is 'behind' the other. (and I tested also my old Bamboo fun from 2006 with 512 level of pressure, USB1 and a low resolution of coordinate...) But this performances of the driver might be revelant on Windows and Mac where no one know how the driver are made or at what level they interact with the input stack and kernel (other concern too: Wacom driver one sending analytics of your usage is not nice for privacy). Fortunately with free/libre and open-source driver (Digimend/xsetwacom/libinput/xinput); all of this is transparent and the tablets all use the same interface; whatever the brand. It's possible to compare the hardware with better metric, imo. Performance is then more related to what computer (CPU/GraphicCard/Ram) you plug it to; and USB bus too (especially a USB 2.0 vs a hub of USB 1.0 with more device streaming data like webcam/mic/etc... on it). But as I said; on Mac/Win drivers made by brand might validated your observation.

@@DavidRevoy You said you fixed wobbly lines with your linux config(xsetwacom I believe...) for your drawing tablets. Have you then tried to trace at slow speed using a physical ruler on the screen ? Just to see if there'd be some wobble ?
@DavidRevoy
@DavidRevoy 3 года назад
@@eddyalvaross2195 Yes, I tried and I couldn't reproduce; ( I had a tiny bit with the proprietary driver but 0 on Digimend after lowering the RawSample to 1 and Suppress to 0; and so, improving the amount of event and not filtering it at the level of the driver ). I saw the effect on other Ytb review; but I wasn't able to get the same effect; even on the edges. And if I turn the Krita stabilizer to a low value (like 30 or 40) and 'stabilize sensor' ; the line are pure perfection. I think it is due to the square coordinate of the device; a 32767 32767 ; a bit a low resolution for a 24 inch . For a reference my Cintiq 13HD has 59152 33448 (for 13inch) and my 22HD was up above 94K. But still; 30K for mapping position over 2560px large and 1440px height sounds still very precise enough; it's more than 10 positions for each pixels. So , the wooble doesn't come from that. Maybe also the model is evolving; and now it is better shielded from magnetic issue.
