Improvements, modifications and tweaks at home with my tablets: I put an overlay sheet of Photodon on my XP-Pen 24 Artist Pro, I adapt a keyboard tray made for Cintiq for the XP-Pen 24 Artist Pro and Cintweak helps me, I then test their Universal UNI-X keyboard tray. I have a real bug issues, trapped under the glass of the XP-Pen and I tear down the tablet, and then I got a gift from Wacom and discover the too grainy overlay surface of the Intuos Pro Large tablet.

Hi David! So, why did you change to the Wacom? Was it just the bug, or what are the advantages and disadvantages of one over the other? Seems an important part of a review, really 😀

Hey, good point. I already prefered "non display tablet" over the last 20 years (I owned the Cintiq21UX, the Cintiq22HD, a Cintiq13HD and the XP-Pen 24 Artist Pro) and I always spent more time on the 'large' Intuos tablet (I had the Intuos 3 for a very long period, and also a Intuos 4 XL for long too), for context. The thing I loved about the Intuos Large Pro, was something about its resolution and a sort of built-in micro path smoothing (I guess, might be placebo). The pressure curve length is also super long (too long, I have to use only the first 75%). And I like the immediate plug-n-play support with my GNU/Linux system. It's full size active area is like 6cm width smaller than my previous custom area of comfort I set on all the too big active area of my ex - Intuos 4 XL. The thickness on the desk is really cool, it's like the thickness of a magazine and the bevel around is smooth and doesn't grab the hair of my arms. The black sort of aluminium feeling of the case remains always cold (and in September, with the high temperature here that was a relief), and the overall experience is in average easier compared to all the tweaks I was going on to get a better workflow with the XP-Pen 24 Artist Pro; or dealing with the thickness of the Intuos 4 XL and custom area calibration. But as I said on the video: even with all these advantages, I still have the nostalgia of drawing on a screen tablet.

@@DavidRevoy Thank you! That helps :) I work with a Intuos Pro Medium from 2013. My nibs are quite long lasting (I guess because I don't draw as much as you do, at all) But to me the surface is almost a little bit like sandpaper: my pen stutters on it, and I would like it to be smoother. Paper isn't smooth like glass, of course, but it's not hard either. I think I'd rather draw on smooth glass then on sandpaper :) I was thinking about changing to Xencelabs Pen Tablet or maybe even to X-Pen, as I have difficulty to automate my hand-eye coordination with a tablet without screen. I know you could buy the smooth replacement sheets for Intuos, but they seemed to have stopped selling those. If anyone would know which protector I could buy that will work on it, I would e grateful! Thanks David, for your videos and brushes!

@@Grymt 🙂 I used to really like the Huion WH1409 overlay sheet, they have some on their eshop and they are not expensive compare to the competition. But they are smooth like Intuos 3 era tablet; They are at least large to make DIY, that's the one I had on my Intuos 4 XL, and my Intuos 4 Medium for travelling has a piece of it too (I bought 3 overlays when I saw they were good for my need to DIY). Unfortunately, they are too small to cover the full Intuos Pro Large area.

@@DavidRevoy Thanks again! Alas, the Huion WH1409 surface sheets seem to have sold out. I guess I can buy any other Huion sheet that's big enough, and then try to cut it so it fits? Sorry for all the questions!
@DavidRevoy
@DavidRevoy Год назад
@@Grymt Oh no, sold out! Ok, I'm glad I still have a spare one in the garage for my future replacement. I haven't tested other one, but I guess it is safe to assume they have a sort of overlay standard (more or less) between their model. Cutting those is usually easy, here the only thing I do is to use a thin sand paper (T400) to smooth the edge after cutting them and make the rounded corner. This way, it's smooth and well finished.

Just want to add some tips to folks who are planning to use Wacom Intuos Pro 2, how to resolve nib issue: 1. The David's way 2. Replace nib to the Titanium alloy one. It cost around 4$ at aliexpress 3. Buy 40+ regular nibs from China too, costs around 10$. Of course, they are not original, but work really well. 4. Wacom have "Wacom Replacement Sheets", they going in 3 texture type of roughness. One sheet costs 40$ (L size) :) 5. Buy protector for tablet that has smooth surface. The quality one costs around 20$ at amazon. 6. If you haven't Intous Pro 2 or any L size Wacom tablet, better buy a used, it should be already smoothed. Or even one of previous Intuos Pro generation (Intuos 3,4, 5, Pro 1). Costs from 20$ up to 200$

Funny that real life hardware bugs happen to this day! 🙂Too bad it was your tablet, of course. I also have a screen tablet and a pen tablet, but I very rarely take out the screen one. There's just too much going for a pen tablet -- the ergonomics, being able to use a larger screen, a higher refresh rate... Also I'm a bit scared that if I get used to a screen tablet too much, I'll have trouble using a pen tablet again.

I feel ya with that bug. I put sticky tape on the edges of my cintiqs to avoid that from happening after a critter got in there but luckily left again. I'd rather have ugly tape on the front than bugs in the picture, but it sure isn't ideal

Amazing video showing off the hardware! I actually have a question. I use a huion kamvas 22 plus and saw the universal cintweak keyboard trays are now out. The one issue I have with the kamvas is its lack of express keys and the keyboard sits in an uncomfortable place on my desk. Should I invest in a monitor arm so I could place the keyboard under the monitor or should I get the keyboard tray? (Some would argue preferably both but it'd cost a tad bit)

Hi David, It is interesting to hear about your problems with your XP-Pen 24Pro. My XP-Pen 24Pro just died. Very frustrating but no power goes into it and I tried to get it repaired to no avail. This is an expensive piece of kit and I will not buy another XP-Pen as a result.

Outch! Oh my, I understand. That's hard. Mine has a 18 months of warranty, and I'm still in it (the default legal period in Europe). Unfortunately, it will expire in summer and I think the tablet will be in my closet on its cardboard until the warranty expire. What have you bought to replace it?

Ahhh... Looks like youtube do not like links in comments. Anyway... For intuos tablet titanium nibs is kind of good solution agains nibs wearing off. Also to make paper like feel of the intuos surface, you can simply cover it with paper... it will not affect elecromagnetic field at all. I have an article on my site about few hardware and software tricks.

Suggestion to improve Intuos Pro. Measure and buy a piece of 2mm glass and place on top of the tablet. Then, stick a layer of protective film of your choice on top. Maybe the same protective film u use on your XP-Pen and enjoy your new intuos pro surface. :-) I have a intuos small with a glass sheet add on without protective film, I love the smoothness of the glass surface. let me know if you would like to see a picture of it :-)

@farahdouibi9366
@farahdouibi9366 Год назад
@@DavidRevoy Merci !

Have you tried just laying the wacom on top of the drawing screen when you want to use it? I have both styles of tablet from Huion and I can adjust the stand of the big screen tablet to go flat and then lay the other tablet on top. Also my Huion kamvas 20 pro has a bunch of buttons to program and in addition I use the KD100 mini keypad thingy with even more keys and a dial. So no keyboard needed only if I need to type words and I don't want to use a screen keyboard.

Hey, no my monitors are too thick and larger to get layered on top of the non-display tablet; also their overlay is flexible and would take scratch in no time. But I remember the DIYtiq threads on Reddit, with good makers disassembling old Intuos large and flat LCDs to make their own display tablets (it was a big cut in budget 10 years ago when Huion and XP-Pen were not on the market, and Wacom could sell 2K€ this type of device. The LCD and old non display tablet were 2 time less expensive). Unfortunately, I never see any of this threads having a good result. It often ended in case made of sticky rubber band, big offset, magnetic noise (power supply of the LCD not shielded well getting in the wave required for the stylus to be recognised). But sure, maybe I'll study Cintiq flat enough to be used as traditional tablet. I just need to find one with an active area of at least 42cm large, and QuadHD resolution so I can clone on it my main device. A good cable management would be good. I studied the market, the closest is the Cintiq 16 Pro, but the area is smaller and it makes the QuadHD resolution really too high pixel density and stressful for eyes and its cable management is not good.

Have you seen the Huion 16 4k pro, you can use that one as a display and turn the screen off and use it as a pen tablet. Screenwise is not as big as the 24 but you get the option to use it in bot modes, the best of both worlds. You can see some videos in Amazon, on RU-vid I haven't seen many people using it in that way.

@@DavidRevoy Yeah, check it out! :) I couldn't get used to one or the other, and then saw that Huoin 16 4k pro and the resolution is pretty good, it's portable as well, I was used to my 22 Huion model, and at the beginning, I had to zoom more often because I came from a bigger screen but, I'm happy with the change, and with that one I have the best of both worlds. I have the same Wacom Intuos pro (medium). I have bought 3 of it because it always falls appart after something like 2.5 years) for some reason... (like the touch button getting loose and keeping on switching touch on and off... then open the tablet to fix and break some plastic clips and so on...). The last one I have bought needs replacement, but I am afraid to buy one and miss an imminent model update. (They released version 3 of their pen so who knows...)

😱😱😱 3 ?! Oh wow, I had no idea the device could be that fragile. My old Intuos 3 L and 4 XL had a long life (until the overlay were hard to find replacement, or pen got flat pressure and pen became hard to find 'new' unit not already used or with a sticky plastic). I'll keep an eye if this model I have falls apart in the next years. Thanks for the feedback!

@@DavidRevoy I have had a lot of misfortune with Wacom (cintiq 24HD that turns black. while touch is working. Seems to be a known issue and they don't acknowledge it). My intuos 4 was strong, but the rubber went off (I ride my bike everyday with it in my bag). So the last intuos pro, I took care of them and yet... that ticking touch switch button I never use went loose etc... So all in all I don't buy wacom thinking "it will last more" anymore :) Yet design-wise they are still my favorite (no flashy, fancy useless gadgets...)

Hey! It was plug-and-play on my Fedora KDE 37, it was even recognised by the Plasma GUI with all feature. I decided to bypass it with a custom Xsetwacom script (I'm still on X11), to set the pressure curve, buttons, etc... I was probably lucky. libwacom does a good work at catching the new models, but it's often 3 to 6 month after their release on the market, and I was a bit afraid my model sent from Wacom America would be one of these "too new to work", fortunately, it was not.

@DavidRevoy
@DavidRevoy Год назад
Hey, thanks for the advice, but if you look at the video, I have already the ergotron arm on the shot. I think I was also one in the first generation of artist to popularize this type of arm, eg on my blog 12 years ago ( www.davidrevoy.com/article102/ergotron-lx-arm-for-cintiq ). Also, I already owned the Cintiq 12WX, Cintiq 21UX, Cintiq 22HD and Cintiq 13HD, and probably tried most of the mainstream model in demo booth at art conventions. The XP-Pen 24 Artist Pro has a really good display with a large Gamut, Quad HD for 24 inch and the stylus battery less and reduced lag is really matching the Wacom I owned so far (and that, for a reduced price). So all in all to say, getting a Wacom and the Ergotron alone is not what I need, nor the best combo.
