The Yayoi Period, an Age of Spirits and War | History of Japan 5

The Yayoi Period was a time of growth and advancement. Agriculture and metalworking allowed the Yayoi to thrive and expand across the islands of Japan.
Yayoi society became violent and unequal. Farming resulted in power concentrating in an elite minority. These were the people who owned land and crops, mainly rice. A complex class hierarchy formed. War was common, as land owners sought to protect their property.
Clans formed during this era, starting a societal structure that would exist for more than a thousand years.
The Yayoi were quite a religious bunch. Shamans and religious rituals were important parts of life. They believed in the spiritual world. They believed kami were real and affected their lives.

The historic class divide still is controversial today. As you mentioned, anything dealing with death was unclean, so that meant butchers, undertakers, leather workers, and more, were considered untouchables. How this comes into play now, is that as untouchables, many of them lived in segregated villages just for them. This meant that certain towns and even last names came to be associated with being untouchable, and since name (obviously) and ancestral home (randomly) appear on your registry, companies have been accused of discriminating against people whose ancestors belonged to this caste, and matchmaking services privately investigating to make sure you weren't about to marry into a family with historic untouchable ties. I can't remember the number exactly, but a very high percentage of Yakuza have ties to this. I'd guess they were disillusioned by discrimination and felt a sense of power and family by joining the Yakuza.
@Linfamy
@Linfamy 6 лет назад
Love this comment, Mary! There are so many things you can't know about a culture unless you live there, and modern discrimination against "untouchables" was something I didn't know was a thing. I can absolutely believe that people join the Yakuza due to discrimination. When you remove employment opportunities from people, you push them towards crime. I see that here in the US. Ex-convicts often return to a life of crime because they can't get hired. When employers see that "felony" box checked on an application, your application goes in the trash most likely.
@jrpx4049
@jrpx4049 6 лет назад
Discrimination of Burakumin (which is similar to Korea's "untouchables", Baekjeong) gets overplayed in foreign journalism. It's not really all that much of thing anymore, although, yes, on rare occasion, a few really snobby people may discriminate against someone with a certain surname, but the overwhelming majority of Japanese people do not. In fact, a large percentage of Japanese people have some ancestry from the Burakumin class. BTW, It was an American author in the 1980s who made the claim about a high percentage of Yakuza being Burakumin. I have no idea as to the veracity of the claims, but even since the 1980s, a lot has changed.. In any case, the responsibility for engaging or not engaging in criminal activities is always on the individual.
@Averyfane
@Averyfane 6 лет назад
jrpx great point here. In the early 2000s I did some consulting for Yakuza, nothing illegal, as they have loads of legitimate business. Anyhow, after a few years of friendship I asked about the Burakumin thing, and was told from a few of them, including one who said their grandparents were Burakumin, that it's mostly a myth, and that within the Yakuza, it's not a point of discussion really, nor an issue either way. There's definitely more Burakumin heritage people open to talk about it there, however that doesn't necessarily mean that there's more of them there or not. In the 90s a friend took me to a Buraku area on the edge of Kantou. If I hadn't been told where we were, it would have been very hard to differentiate from anywhere else in Japan.

@Mary Gebbie @Linfamy This is my first time to hear about entire villages being set aside for a specific occupation. However, I did know about the guilds called "be" and how each person of that guild was known by their be. I just assumed that all villages were made up of multiple "be". Is this wrong? For example, wasn't the guy who was supposed to stay dirty called the "imibe"? There was also the sewing-be, fishing-be, hunting-be, etc. At that time, there was no such thing as actual "last names". Your name would only be Mary, and if you were of a guild who made weapons, you'd be known as "Mary of the weapons-be." I guess these "be" originally became their last names and that led to the discrimination that you described. Very interesting comments guys! I'm an East Asian Studies major and I'm trying to understand this topic more.
@Linfamy
@Linfamy 5 лет назад
@Jathon Thompson I'm sure *be's* of normal professions like sewing and fishing coexisted in the same villages. But we must remember that back in those days, villages were tiny, so single-be villages were probably common too. The Imibe was a *be* of "abstainers" and yeah they engaged in a lot of that stuff. However, I'm not sure we know when it was founded. I tend to think that the fortune-keeper practice was already occurring before the Imibe formed a guild around the practice. Good luck with your studies!

Interesting to see that the Yayoi developed Iron tools before bronze, unlike the common path of discovering bronze before iron. The Yayoi are one of the only cultures I can find that did this. The Chinese, Egyptians, Hittites, Babylonians, Indians, and Greeks all went through the traditional pattern, interesting to see...
@Linfamy
@Linfamy 6 лет назад
Yes! And the reason? The Yayoi did not invent bronze and iron making themselves. They imported iron and bronze objects from the mainland before they finally learned to create them locally.
@DccAnh
@DccAnh 2 года назад
@Sven Kortjohn By the time the Yayoi come to Japan, iron already replace bronze, and since they come from mainland China and Korea, there's no reason to re use bronze instead of keep using iron.

I think the Ashanti also did this in Africa as well. This is mostly because they probably didn’t have the proven tin mines of other locations. But once metalworking and agriculture got going in Japan they sure did take quickly.

There’s a phrase about becoming a successful channel on RU-vid “If you want to start a RU-vid channel, start it in 2007” this channel disproves that phrase.
@Linfamy

Too early to tell, but I sure hope so =)
@yz5470
@yz5470 5 лет назад
Depends on what kind of channel it is. I don't think it's simple but it certainly holds a bit of truth in it. For example, if you're going to start a gaming channel right now, you probably won't be successful [anytime soon] UNLESS you have a "Quirk". This "Quirk" is very important for Entertainment-Based Channels because it's what draws the audience in and it also makes you easier to identify with. It's like clickbait, it's quite important when you start off. Granted, some big RU-vidrs like Pewdiepie, Jacksepticeye, Markiplier, etc. Has a specific "Quirk" to them despite starting early. But the thing is that, there are many big RU-vidrs out there as well that doesn't have any particular Quirk yet they have a big amount of subscriber. So it's definitely a complex thing. One thing we know for sure is that, starting a channel on RU-vid NOW is much harder than starting earlier. I think we can all agree on that. "Early bird gets worm" and everything. However, "Informational" type of videos like these are a different thing. When delivering an Informational video like this, you don't need to show your reaction and/or personality. The most important thing in this type of stuff is how much you know, how you arrange it and how you represent it. Which can [arguably] be much harder to do since you would have to research it first. Not to mention, you might run out of ideas [Especially if your channel focuses on one/few particular topic, it also depends on how niche the topic is]. It's definitely harder than just playing Fortnite and editing a few funny clips.

Most Yayoi people are from southern China and part of the Baiyue. Baiyue were a union of Austronesian, Kra-Dai, Hmong-Mien and Austroasiatic tribes. Japanese is possibly a para-Austronesian group.

dude, I love your videos. Ignore the 1% that don't like them. think of it like this, if 99% of people like your videos and 1% don't then you got a 99% on the test.

I'm Asian so 99% on a test is DEVASTATING 🤣 Glad you like the videos, I have thick skin so I'm not bothered by the hate, but I do like constructive criticism :)
