I have watched all of those Quinton Reviews videos.

I got laid off about 2 weeks ago, devastated me. Currently doing what I can to get myself back on the market, hate to see it.

I work in an online media space and it's actually somewhat scary to me to see all these others get let go. But not me though I'm an institution and I'm built different.

Atrioc has a point, there is a huge demand for long RU-vid videos that can be listened to while concentrating on other activities. I like putting something on while folding laundry, vacuuming or while some other menial task that doesn't take much attention. I don't want slob but long videos that get their point across even if not watched but only listened to. Podcasts are mostly slob to me and I'm not interested one bit in watching hour long videos talking about some other piece of media, so right now I'm mostly watching specialist channels that talk about topics in history, science and military topics but there a lot of things that don't get covered or could be done better.

Big A has no idea how amazing QuintonReviews videos are actually great. And I have never seen the shows he talks about. The length is part of a joke too.

I just wanna point out that there's plenty of very long video essay-esque videos on the exact topic that Atrioc is talking about here that are actually really good and dense with information. The style of "super long, super detailed review of thing" has existed on youtube since before long form content became viable for the algorithm simply because some people just wanted to go into all the details on the things they loved/hated, but as other people who used to make 10 minute video essays on how Zack Snyder's Man of Steel was actually great noticed this style gaining popularity and traction in the algorithm they started switching over, but without actually changing their video making process, so instead of 10 minutes of bland, soft voice talking about nothing we now have 4 hour videos talking about nothing which use the reputation really long videos originally accrued (being really detailed and informative) to attract views, at which point people would just toss the video onto the second monitor under the idea that "oh he'll make a point eventually, this is just the intro", going through the whole thing without really paying attention like Atrioc said and then convincing themselves that a point was indeed made at some point.

I got layoffed in late 2023 from a small hardware store. Sad to see it go the community was very sad.

the long form youtubers do what they do because 1. more runtime = more ad revenue but only if you have decent viewer retention. for some youtubers (hbomb is an obvious example) quality > quantity is their "brand" so they have an actual incentive to make their videos longer if they don't release many. and 2. they don't have producers or editors reviewing their work and telling them "trim this shit it's boring", I often think in those videos how entire tangents / sections would definitely get cut if they had anyone they trusted to review their work before they put it out.

I understand these videos, as I watched 9 hours of Atrioc watching 9 hours of bionicle lore

It kind of sounds like it's mainly in tech and gaming... which were notoriously pumped with blank checks and later found out that it's not as easily profitable as it seems or that the #s were a bit inflated and unrealistic for actual growth. To me... it just seems people got blank checks.. over hired... then fired people soon as they stopped continually growing as a company. It doesn't seem like mass layoffs are going to spread year round in other industries from what I can tell. Though AI will cause a huge sweep eventually. The tech is just not there yet.

Well over hiring is true. That being said the Federal Reserve increased interest rates dramatically. Companies use loans to expand. So when loans are too expensive companies not only stop all future projects but also projects currently in development. I wish people would do more research, the fed reserve literally described this when they increased the rate and explained how an economy running hot is bad.

For what it's worth, solo RU-vid reviewers are way better than corporate review sites -- it reduces the biases involved into a single person. Once you know a reviewer's specific biases, all you have to do is view their reviews through that lens, and you're informed. (Edit: This does not apply to 9 hour video essays, lmao)

I can also oversimplify your opinions to make you feel better in a comedic way.

The only exception to movie reviewer's is YMS, he actually gives a fuck about pacing a video that's an hour plus long so that there's no dead air or filler.

Mass layoffs are ALWAYS mismanagement. Mainly because investors expect endless growth and profit even though that's incredibly unrealistic. There's always a plateau...

I really do think that this is a half baked take from atrioc, to say that a RU-vid video with a 4-hour length doesn't take a lot of work compared to somebody who's able to post weekly I find a little far-fetched, especially after hbomberguy called out so many weekly engagement edutainment channels blatant plagiarism. Admittedly He's not making a direct comparison between the two, but it does come across as such and I feel it's a mischarization of the quality in general.

Rings of Power is not average. It is unfathomably and hilariously bad. I've seen worse, but I've never seen anything with so much money poured into it be so bankrupt in every possible way.

Rare big A horrible take about longer videos. Seeing a longer video shows how passionate they are about the subject. I don't want to watch a video that's short and you just sort of mention stuff about the thing you're talking about., I want a long two plus hour video that's going to go in depth and you really show how passionate you are about the topic.

Why was atrioc explaining that the rock is big and Kevin heart is short funnier than the actual movie about the same joke premise... I don't get it. That movie is so terrible... But when atrioc explained the movie... It was so much funnier.
