I started my first full time job in IT audit in August. I was lucky to keep my start date, but many of my consulting friends had their start dates pushed at least 3-6 months. I would have been scrambling to find a job that pays enough for rent in my city. I would probably find a retail job and work to bridge the gap, but after 5 years of working through college and a brutal senior year I was looking forward to a break and living off my savings.

My roommate and I graduated this summer and she has been looking for an entry level job in genetics research for the last 5 months. She didn’t hear back from any applications until one month ago when she realized she still had access to her student account and could apply for jobs internally at our university. Now she has gotten a few interviews. To me it seems venture capitalists and institutions that typically give out grants or investments are reeling it back in. Research labs are probably not receiving the amount of funding they’re used to and can’t hire more techs.

I have the urge to watch those AI generated plot summaries and actually enjoy them but stop myself because watching it long-form is exponentially better for enjoyment. I think the reason they're popular is because people still get the enjoyment of the premise and some of the plot out of it. Top tier if the visuals & direction aren't great but the story sounds interesting. I do do it for horror movies cause I get too antsy and my brain thinks its real.
@Blazik3n99

It's like having a friend tell you about a cool movie they watched. It's usually interesting to hear a brief summary of the plot. If it sounds interesting you can still watch the full movie and get enjoyment out of it. I remember hearing about this study that found that people on average enjoy a story more if they have had it spoiled for them beforehand. Seems weird but clearly a lot of people prefer to know.

There was a study done a while ago that found that people on average enjoy a story more if they have had it spoiled for them beforehand. I wouldn't choose to have anything spoiled for me, but I totally get reading the plot synopsis before the movie. It changes the experience, but it's enjoyable in a different way. It takes you out of the audience and instead puts you in a weird elevated perspective, like a critic, or someone watching the film for the second time. Rather than focusing on the story you can pay more attention to performances, cinematography, direction, etc.. It would be interesting to see how things play out on screen in comparison to how you've imagined it. You can probably also pick up on/appreciate small details, subtle hints, foreshadowing etc. a lot more, something which would normally need a second watch.
@nakodares5982
@nakodares5982 6 месяцев назад
No shot that study is replicable or it must be really divisive in outcomes of something. Most (not all) people I know have like zero interest in committing to watching something if they know what happens.
@Blazik3n99
@Blazik3n99 6 месяцев назад
@@nakodares5982 Most people would say they hate spoilers, myself included. I think that's why I remembered reading about the study, it seemed crazy. According to the study, on average there was an increase in enjoyment, so there would definitely be some people that were below the average. I did a bit of googling, the report is titled 'Spoilers don't spoil stories'. It only covered short written stories that the participants read as part of the study, so realistically I don't think it would also apply to the media most people would consider (long form content, TV/movies, personal investment in the IP). Still, it's made me less likely to give up on/avoid a piece of media just because I got spoiled, and I think it's relevant to the conversation regarding why people read the plot on Wikipedia mid-movie - obviously some people get more enjoyment that way. In general I think people overestimate how much a spoiler ruins things - having 'zero interest' genuinely baffles me, unless its like a 5 series show that they weren't that interested in anyway.
@nakodares5982
@nakodares5982 5 месяцев назад
@@Blazik3n99 Thanks for the reply! Interesting stuff. The "zero interest" comment comes from single narrative story driven movies or series which have a theoretical payoff of the buildup to the conclusion. But I'lll share the ideas you said here with people that lose interest once the conclusion is spoiled, and also take it on board myself.

TBH i sometimes do look up the plot to a show or film half way in. It is mostly for films im not too invested in (not that big of a movie person). I just feel like there is an over saturation of garbage and I will get exhausted by how the movie chooses to convey the story. I also will do it for older films or films that are built around an idea or message to help me understand the motivations of the director. For example Wes Andersons asteriod city. I am a big fan of his films but I wasnt getting that into asteriod city, but I looked up some of the intentions and symbolisms the directory was implementing. After getting a better understanding I found myself appreciating the process of observing the patterns in the film.
