1936 saw three kings of England, in a year that greatly unsettled the monarchy. Following the death of George V, he was succeeded by his eldest son, Edward VIII, who a few months later abdicated and was exiled to France, and his younger brother George VI ascended to the throne. This was a time of great crisis and instability for the English royal family, calling into question the role and relevance of the monarchy in a world in the midst of change.
King George VI was the British king portrayed in the award-winning movie 'The King's Speech'

For me, as a tourist and lover of British culture, George V & VI are the greatest monarchs of the modern British era.

Having seen at least two different documentaries, there is a perfectly good argument that Edward was deposed by the Establishment. Sure, he abdicated, but the Establishment made absolutely sure he couldn’t stay on the throne. Normal, every day people were upset when he was pushed off the throne, but you have to wonder how they would have felt if they’d known the truth about his political allegiances in those years before and during the Second World War. Little did even the Establishment know, they had removed a King who would have sold this country down the river if there was some benefit in it for him. On one level I feel sorry for Wallis because she got stuck for the rest of her life with the pathetic, weak fool, but she was every bit as bad in many ways. They were both completely selfish and self centred, only ever concerned with what they wanted. Wallis did try to leave him, on one occasion he threatened to kill himself if she left him, but she didn’t try that hard because she knew she was enjoying the expensive gifts, the jewels and so on, he was giving her. The Government did absolutely the right thing in removing him from the throne. The pair of them deserved each other.

Principled is a word I would not have used in describing Wallis. If she were principled, she would never have subjected her husband to the role of cuckold. If Ernest were complicit in his wife's affair with Edward tp climb the social ladder, then they both deserved the consequences.

Ernest Simpson encouraged Wallis to pursue a relationship with Edward at first. I think Wallis was convinced she’d have a bit of fun with Edward and then a younger, more attractive model would come along and Edward would be off, leaving Wallis to go back to her life. No younger model came along and Edward refused to let go of Wallis. In a sense these days we would describe his behaviour almost as stalking, but as much as some historians insist she tried to get out of the relationship, including one time when she told him she was going and he told her he would kill himself if she left him, I don’t think she tried that hard to get away from him. She liked the things she was getting from him, the jewels and other expensive gifts, to get out.

King George V - The Peaceful King. King Edward VIII - The King That Never Been Crown. King George VI - The Darling King.

The narratrix erred over and over and over by referring to Wallis a "Miss Simpson".

It's so amazing watching this history. I'm wondering about my great-great grandparents and when they fled/fought/frightened. Irish. So want to know. However no one in my family ever chooses to check out DNA history. 😢

Watch the Channel 4 documentary on here about Edward and Wallis and you'll change your tune. A wee bit of an establishment stitch-up, old friend. The Establishment (Whitehall, the C of E, the aristocracy) stitched Edward VIII and his paramour up like a kipper. Awful, just awful. God save the King my hairy arse.

I don't know. Maybe because im a guy. I don't think Edward was a great looking guy. He and Wallis were made for each other

@@johnkeller6063 oh I’m so glad someone else thinks they were nothing to look at. Edward looked like the back end of a bus and Wallis looked masculine. It takes all sorts I suppose, but people going on about how handsome they were are just being ridiculous.

Anna Pasternak … Wallis apologist par wx excellence … she repeats yhe same thing over and over. Wallis loyal? Not to her husband. Kind … to herself maybe. Principled? Her main principal was how to get on. She and Ernest were bustlers. Wallis had had a fairly rocky and difficult and unstable childhood abd it’s understandable that she wanted stability and that meant money and status to her. But she definitely wasn’t principled .

I was eager to watch this documentary. However, the moment I saw the "historians " that were commenting I knew it was trash. These people have a woke agenda. A total waste of time.
