Don’t know if it’s an “UM, ACTUALLY” moment for Ben or the writers of the adventure, but I believe the Red Dragon actually symbolizes Wales, not England. It’s even on their flag, and Arthur is a Welsh/Brythonic Celtic figure at heart. Nerd-out complete; still a great review. This is the kind of adventure/video about an adventure that makes me want to run out and buy a copy of Dolmenwood or something right away.

Great point, I think you're right about the dragon.

I believe the language I used is “red dragon of Britain,” not England. King of the Britons and all that.

I really like half of this, like the more mythological and symbolic encounters and the puzzle dungeon elements like the mirror door. The wizard school as location isn't my cup of tea and the amount I would need to shave of to make it work in my game is a bit much. Ultimately I think this is a pass for me, but I can see and respect the love and attention that went into this.

For the love of the OSR, give this man a thumbs up and a comment! This sounds like a really fantastic adventure. I basically use Frog God’s Lost Lands for a world and add stuff like Dolmenwood to it. This would easily fit here.

Tbf the black knight is a common motif in Arthurian legend even outside of Monty Python, iirc, though I don’t remember what specific role he plays. A cursory search suggests multiple versions throughout multiple stories, though

Just the way it’s constructed (for example the elf names) seems like it was written for Dolmanwoods.
@MatthewStrom88
@MatthewStrom88 8 месяцев назад
The elf naming is taken from The Ladies of Grace Adieu by Susanna Clarke, but for sure this and Dolmenwood are kindred spirits.

Hmm maybe run it with Troika? Could that be possible because of the time setting?
@kylehart8829

I run everything as a Troika mod usually, but for this one it just feels right to use a class-based system. Leveling up feels really natural here in a way that it usually doesn't, and Dolmenwood just works perfectly for this. I'm running it right now as a one-on-one with the player character being an Elf Enchanter and it seems to work really well.

Worth noting though that I'm not using experience points as usual but the end of the first and second terms grant one level each, then after that every academic year grants one level.

I hate wizard schools, because I hate Harry Potter. But I smell lovecraft here... ❤

Please consider Terry Pratchett for how a decent Wizard University could actually be. The lazyness and bureacratic posturing of the wizards is an amazing running gag through all the books. "Magic isn't that hard, otherwise wizards wouldn't be able to do it," Granny Weatherwax

Great review! While "kilo-dungeon" and hexcrawl and weird/whimsical magic items sound like fun, I'm a bit disappointed. These are nothing new, we all have seen similar things over the decades. I hoped that this somehow managed to make the school part of the wizarding school interesting. It seems to me that it didn't, since all the school stuff is in the background and serves primarily to give PC's information about NPCs.

There's no really Harry Potter in there. It's just the basic concept of a school for mages.
