In this video, we start our investigation of the Eight Limbs of Yoga! We explore sutras 2.29-2.38, the first limb of Patanjali's ashtanga yoga, which includes the yamas. These five "restraints" are gems that are powerful tools for our spiritual practice that can help us see when and how we fall off course. This section also includes a discussion of pratipaksha bhavanam - and how we can transform negative thoughts and feelings to something brighter and better.

Aparigraha really resonated with me because I AM NOT giving up my coffee machine. I am very very very attached to it. However, this helps me practice Satya because I am being truthful about this and also Ahimsa because if I have my coffee machine I'm much nicer to be around 🤔🤔...second thoughts not really sure I have got the hang of this at all!🤣oh well next lesson

Rachel.. Kudos to you for mentioning the Indian Hindu saint Patanjali's yoga sutras as a source of yoga.. I have seen many videos of Western yoga teachers but I have never seen them mention Patanjali or the Yoga sutras.. They usually will have a statue of Buddha in the yoga room not knowing that Lord Buddha never did yoga (He meditated though) Great job and Namaste 🙏🏼

Thank you for this series on the Yoga Sutras, Rachel🙏 I really loved the idea of seeing the Yamas as signposts instead of rules!

ahimsa. non-violence. on this one, where does the consumption of flesh of another living being fall in? does this mean i am non-established?

Ahhhhhh That is a great debate! I really feel that each person has to figure that one out for themselves. I think the most important thing to consider is being really true to oneself in one’s heart. And if you are going to be a carnivore, be z carnivore with full knowledge and mindfulness. And if you are going to be a vegan, also do that with mindfulness and care…. We live in a complex world within an incredible web of cause-and-effect. All we can do is our best.

Thats indirect violence so should counted as violence as one can live with vegetarian diet without any problem
