"A Pair Of Twins" from the lost English language version of 'Les Demoiselles de Rochefort'. Unfortunately, the original tape is old so I can't do anything about the video quality, but posted here for fans and those interested.
As you can see, only the musical numbers were reshot in English; dialogue scenes use the original French language footage dubbed into English. Also interesting to note is that these original English lyrics are completely different to the English subtitles that appear on the current French language version of the film.
Voice actors:
Sue Allen - Solange (Françoise Dorléac)
Jackie Ward - Delphine (Catherine Deneuve)

Need someone from criterion to unearth the English version of this movie. The French version is spectacular but since this is a mixed language cast seeing the English language speakers actually performing their scenes would be fascinating

Holy shit. I had NO idea this even existed . And it’s NOT a fucking overdub. It’s THEM singing in ENGLISH. I got chill bumps listening to this. I’ve been obsessed with this outlier masterpiece for YEARS. And then THIS revelation? Does the whole THING have a LITERAL English version? WTF? So much for a good night’s sleep. I just GOTTA find out....Insane. After decades of loving this, I’ll ALWAYS prefer the French version. But that there might be a FULL English version?....Dude....seriously

There is an "official" english version, the movie was filmed twice in two different languages, but the english version was never released publicly, even if it exists somewhere, probably owned by Demy's children I think the english dialogues were written by Demy like the french ones

I'm from Australia and watched this film in English on late night TV back in the 80's on a station called TCN 9. In. the late 90's while in London I managed to find the Sound track to the film but it was in French. Both versions are great but to hear it in English again is special. Wonderful film, great music and eye candy.

From what I understand the English version is "lost" or at least it hasn't been seen in public for decades. The English version actually flopped, so it wasn't seen by a lot of people on the first place. The strange thing is that almost everyone on the internet who remembers watching this version is Brazilian. It seems that the movie aired on English in Brazilian TV in the 80s. Maybe it aired on US TV to (supposedly on Network Television in the 70s). The thing is that they restored the movie in 1998, but they only restored the French Version. That's the version everyone knows about. Also, the complete soundtrack in English is available for some reason.

Wow - thanks for this post. I've totally fallen in love with this film (got the Criterion box set of Demy films) and just heard about the english version. An a historical level, it is quite interesting - though somehow, the lyrics work better in French (of which i don't speak at all) - I guess a French film with French sensibilities (although we have the American actors and definite homage to West Side Story in a few places starting at the very beginning) needs to be in French. I like the French version better, too, but it has nothing to do with the lip movements not synching with what the characters are saying. Foreign films seldom synch their dialogues. In fact, half of the time we're not even hearing the voice of the actors. We're getting the voice of some actor who dubbed the voice of who we're watching.

We scored on the Fox scoring stage as I recall, and I was part of the vocal ensemble.I never really got into "dubbing" for an actress though that would have been lots of fun. I've done many solos for film scores - in the earlier days, when the breathy, soft, scary voice seemed to be the thing. For Klute (Michael Small, composer) for Dirty Harry, The President's Analyst, The Fox, Cool Hand Luke (Lalo Shiflin composer) . I sang a lullabye used also as the End Title in Secret of Nimh for Jerry Goldsmith, and a "theramin" sound for Looney Tunes: Back in Action, also for Jerry.. Other films where maybe the composer used a high, floaty obligato. And Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid - did solos in that underscore with Burt Bacharach. And Most Recently, I sang and was choral director of all things, for Deadpool2~! First time I ever gave a cut-off to a choir on the phrase "You can't stop this mother-f----er", for Composer Tyler Bates!

They did an English version, and it is interesting because the voices are different in the English version than the singers who dubbed the French version (it is well-known that the only person in the movie who ended up not being dubbed was Danielle Darrieux). They must have used different singers to dub the English version.
@fredcovers6484
@fredcovers6484 8 лет назад
Exactly! @Barbara A. you cannot recognize Deneuve's voice here; it's nowhere to be heard. She's "rather" fluent in English, but her accent is very thick. THIS is the English version of the film, i.e. the dialogues are dubbed (the beginning of the scene is the same as the French version, only dubbed) and then all the songs were shot both in French and in English but the Dorleac sisters never sang, in English nor in French. Even Gene Kelly was dubbed! BTW, I have been looking for this FOREVER: where can I find the WHOLE THING? Pretty please?

So was the entire film filmed twice? I don't remember this being mentioned in the documentary on the film (though it's been a long time since I've seen that...) Fascinating. Also, and maybe this is just because, while bilingual, I am primarily anglo, but it's weird how, to me, this feels just so much more natural in French.
@rochefortclips79
@rochefortclips79 6 лет назад
Only the musical numbers were filmed twice. Firstly with the actors miming to the songs in French, then filmed again with the actors miming to songs in English sung by American voice actors. The dialogue scenes are different as they weren't reshot in English. They use the original French language footage which was then later dubbed into English using the American voice actors. This means the actor's mouths only match when they sing and not when they speak. This can be seen in the above clip. None of the French actor's real voices were used in this version. This includes Deneuve, and also Darrieux who was an English speaker and did her own singing in the French version, but here they are both dubbed completely by American voice actors. I've uploaded another clip showing Darrieux. Although it has been stated elsewhere that Gene Kelly had his English singing dubbed by another actor, this is only partially true. Kelly does his own speaking and singing in the film, except in one song when his singing is momentarily dubbed by another actor for a few seconds then changes back to Kelly's voice again. I've read that this occurred as he found some of the singing too high so another actor briefly sang for him, something we was allegedly none too happy about.

Nor she sing adequately. For "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" and this movie, her singing voice was dubbed by someone else. As much as I like her as an actress, and she is the formidable type, let's be real - Demy only got her for star power. (It was typical of the time; even now, it still applies.)

I have the same problem. Women like me only for my good looks; not for my singing and dancing abilities. Except my wife who likes me only for my Kamasutra skills.
