I wish every religious person would watch the scene with the Sri Lankan nun, where Pope Pius admonishes her to not cry, emphatically stating that people who believe should not weep at the death of their loved ones. It gets to the heart of just how insincere many people are, who profess to believe in a God and a heaven. After all, if you genuinely believe in heaven - a place that Christopher Hitchens called an eternal "celestial theme park" - then why cry if your loved ones are destined to go there? Why cry about something which, in reality, should be the happiest point in your life - watching your loved ones go to a place of eternal happiness? To me, the shedding of tears at a funeral, by those who profess to believe in a loving God and heaven, reveals that many professing theists may not believe what they profess.

Drake Santiago Jesus Christ cried before he died too. He also cried in the story of Lazarus. I think it's wrong to think Christians are somehow breaking tradition (or not following the Bible narrative) if they feel sad when someone dies. I also think it would be sociopathic if they didn't.

Fear and avoidance of death is so ingrained in people from a biological perspective. If people were happy when their loved ones died or didn't care when they were about to die, goodluck passing on genes. I used to believe in heaven and yet I still felt bad when people died. I still felt fear in dangerous situations where I could theoretically die, even in a painless way like falling from very high up. I really think it is just how our emotions work, even if in an irrational way in the context of eternal paradise. At least in my experience, It's not an internal logic thing, it is a visceral thing.

But when you are crying at a funeral, are your emotions really connected to the possibility that the person may go to purgatory or hell? Are you really thinking about Adam being expelled from the garden because he ate an apple? Maybe I'm wrong and christians everywhere are really just concerning themselves with the possibility of hell when they shed a tear, but that wasn't my experience when I believed. For me it was more visceral. I'm not agreeing with op that it is hypocritical to cry at a funeral for a catholic btw, I'm just curious about your explanation because I don't understand it. I also wonder why you think this show is misrepresenting catholicism, when a major point of this show is that this pope does things his own way. He isn't concerning himself with standard catholic teaching and discipline and that is why seemingly everyone around him is worried. I'm behind on the show though and not an expert in catholicism, so maybe there are things I am missing.

Drake Santiago I don't think that it's lack of faith to cry. I think it's human. If your best friend or loved one went somewhere you couldn't follow or communicate with them any more wouldn't you still be upset at the loss of their presence in your life. whether or not the are going to a better place doesn't change the fact that they are no longer by your side.
