Thoroughly enjoyed this episode. You've raised great kids Zarna (and Shalabh). By the time my mom had "the talk" with me, I had heard it all from my friends. And this was in the early 1970s in Mumbai. Sadly there was no RU-vid option back then.

Her reaction is more like something I’d expect from my parents and they were way cooler than this!!!! I think people who immigrate are more conservative than the regular Indian in India. That's obviously very mean from someone who probably didn't also grow up with parents who never talk about things like that. I didn't even told my mum when I got my period because everything genitals related was shameful. She said nothing when she found out. They're doing a better job then most American parents and they're setting those kids for academic success and success in life, unlike the typical western parent who wants to be their friend and hang around with them rather than parent. Yes, they're not perfect, but I would rather have them in society than some leftie parents who believe all it matters is that their kid is happy

I am so glad you had this conversation, they are so important! I have to say, I was born and raised on the east coast, and my mother never had a conversation with me about my period. When I got it in 8th grade (I started school young) I did everything on my own, (also pre-google, RU-vid, etc) acquired pads, tampons and learned on my own. My mother was and still is heartbroken by that, but I felt the lack of communication led me to do that, I just figured, ok I should do this. Not saying good or bad. Just my experience. Love you guys, keep up the great convos ❤

The conversation started when my daughters' elementary school asked for parent's permissions (and yes, I read them) and consented to sex education in 5th grade. We, as a family, went to a seminar that talked about periods and growth so my daughters wouldn't ever have to feel even a tinge of shame or embarrassment (that I did, growing up in India) around menses. I adore you Zarna, because you are the essence of every immigrant parent raising an American child and I feel like you get it and make us feel like while we mess up, in so many ways, we can still laugh about it, together as a family. My daughters joke about me being that typical parent and I myself point out the Asian-ness in me, to keep the conversations lighter and open and never to shut the door on us 🙌

Looking at how you talked about it with kids, I feel more comfortable now. After watching this, I appreciate my parents even more for giving me all this information at the right time. (btw, we live in India - because somehow if you are India, it is fine to not have given this talk?) Periods needs to be discussed before the first cycle. I can not imagine the panic this poor girl felt when she started bleeding with absolutely no idea as to why it was happening. 🥲 Also the reason why sex talk is so very important, 1. You don't want a bunch of max level curiosity teenagers, going and exploring things without any prior knowledge. 2. Precaution - unplanned pregnancies and STDs. Also Zarna, let's start at the very basic of being able to say the words. Unplanned pregnancy! I am glad that you had this talk though. Step in the right direction. 💪🏽

Coming from a central Asian country with strict parents, I can definitely tell that the fact that you let your kids talk about this, and that you hear them out and that all the family members are included in this conversation, it is definitively healthy. I mean we all make mistakes both as kids and as parents, but like the fact that you’re open minded enough to sit and talk about it, is very important. I really wish I could be as open with my parents as your kids are, I think they’re very lucky and they have cool parents, so kids, appreciate your parents, trust me they’re genuinely cool.

As an Indian teenagers we are not open about these kind of topics. Like we should but society would not appreciate us at all. For us having sex before marriage is like commiting a crime. We think that Spiritual love is more important. Modern generations are more encouraged towards sex rather than true love. We Indian take loyalty and love very seriously. Even there was that One video which says that Indian moms do not say directly I love you to their kids. Oh well yes cause our moms do that with their affection and care, without actually telling us that she loves us.

The episode was good , but zarna should’ve been there with her daughter through her first period . No matter what she says that was very irresponsible of her as a mother , because there are a lot of changes happening in your body and you don’t understand any of it , on the other hand rather than saying sorry she just pushed it on her husband. Well I’m raised in India and let me tell you Indian mothers are there with you through your periods , pregnancy etc . And They are very concerned and helpful about it.

I recently heard in one channel that I girl wrote a letter to her parents saying that she is bleeding and she doubted its a cancer and committed suicide coz of shame or poverty. It was just her first period. If her own people were explaining her about periods (MC) , everything would have been fine. God bless Zarna and family. Love to you all. From London.

Kudos to you and your family for bringing out these topics. It is a conversation a family should have. PS I will give you and Shalabh A+ in parenting as your kids are comfortable and honest with you guys. They want to share with you guys and have a conversation.

I was not surprised at all to hear what Veer knew. I guess things were different were I grew up but these experiences were happening around me in the late 80's/early 90's. I had friends with boyfriends in the 4th grade and my own first boyfriend was in 5th grade (holding hands, went to a school dance, etc). My 1st kiss was with my 3rd boyfriend... In 7th grade (he was in 9th grade). Because of this, I started having talks *very* early with my own children (age 8, starting with very basic information).

I feel like it would be cool to bring on a professional to ask questions from about all these things because you as an influencer/comedian has a good reach to your audience.

I have 2 daughters now in their 30's. When they had sex education in school I used that to open the door to discussion about menstruation and sex. It wasn't always easy but I wanted my girls to know they could talk to me about everything because my parents did not talk about these things. Kids learn alot about sex in school but they don't always understand what they hear so a parent can help clarify things for them and at the same time explain the consequences of having sex too early or for the wrong reason.

Ok listen zarna aunty ,I am from India ,I am currently 16 ,when I was 13 I got my first time period and my mother helped me a lot ,she even taught me how to wear the pad ( with the help of cardboard) and also explained the whole science behind it .And the most important thing to be noted is that I belong to a very typical Maharashtrian family ,despite of that she taught me guided me throughout and you being in newyork in a way more modern culture just sent a RU-vid video to your daughter 😢😢 But at the same time I appreciate the way u developed understandings in your kids

This was AMAZING! I applaud the fact that you had this conversation (not always an easy subject to bring up) and your kids were open and honest about their views on sex, how they learned about it, what their perspective is now, and when they first were aware of what it all means. You are doing a GREAT job raising them, and they are smart and know that if they don't get what they need/feel they are missing info from you (& uncomfortable asking you directly), they can Google it and/or ask their peers. I told our daughter about how puppies and kittens were made when she was very young (probably 5) and just let it sink in. As she was older, she had sex education in school and learned more. I'm grateful that you spoke about STDs and birth control! Obviously, elementary schools have been providing this information for the past 50+ years. I am 65 and I had it in elementary school here in California. You and your husband offer insight to your perspective not only as parents, but also of your culture, and it is a wonderful opportunity to see and here all that you bring to these episodes. Your children have incredible insight and the discussions you facilitate provide a much missing conversation in society. You are refreshing! You keep the focus on the topic when it starts to vere off center, and you have humor and grace. I love that you appreciate that what your perspective is as a mother may not be the perspective your husband has, or that your children may have. Zarna, you bring such incredible joy with these episodes! I look forward to seeing you this Sunday when you open for Tina Fey & Amy Poehler. Finding you on RU-vid is a great gift! Thank you for your honesty and humor!

This is a wonderful podcast! As a first generation Canadian ( now very old) experienced both aspects as presented by this family: some information, cultural values, and shame or holding back. My mom wanted to change out what she did not receive yet gave a twisted version of what was okay. That said, what I truly delighted in was just the fact that this family sit together to talk, how well they communicate and that the love between them is palpable. Thank you so much for sharing!

Ok. First off, i am so happy to be here and listen in on brown families having these conversations. 5mins in, instant regret. This is exactly how “conversations” go with parents. And i am approaching 40. Nothing has changed. Zarna is trying to control the conversation so much and you can see the boys’ body language shift as they recognise it is not a safe space to talk. All this does is reinforce the message that: “i as a parent will now allow my kids to be their own person. They are not allowed to have real life experiences and i won’t respect them for it.” It’s completely invalidating. i am anxiety-ridden watching this. Only half way through and i can’t take it. Here’s why i am still here: inter generational conversations are important. Zarna, all your emotions/concerns/fears are valid and carrying the responsibility of the episode on your shoulders is a massive mental load. You would have benefited from a facilitator running the discussion. Let’s see what happens in the second half.
