Great content. Having learned that the risks do exist, I have found a solution to be to grow zoas out in a separate tank and then will transplant a few test polyps to the main display aquarium. This serves to safeguard the original colony and can certainly save a few $ in case things go south due to predation or other causes. Oh, yeah - 658th!

Man my cheepo’s (alpha omega, utters white Z) grow like weeds but my expensive guys (LSOH, Vegas strips, halls) grow to the tune of 1 polyp every 3-4 months IF that. I guess it’s the pretty ones that make you work for it. I tell you a target dusting of reef roids and dosing Iodide has definitely helped with growth and color. Amazingly done video an usual Than! Wish everyone took as much care with quality and narration as you do.

Euphilias are the most regular cause of trouble for zoas, in my tanks. Detached hammer polyps land in the zoa colony and release a toxin that slowly spreads to the entire colony. Polyps close down, them turn black and finally melt. It took me years to identify it, because the culprit is gone by the time the colony starts to perish.

You didn't mention hydroids, idk if it's a zoanthid specific pest or not but I had an issue with hydroids growing near a zoanthid colony in my frag tank (I thought it was a filter feeder until I reinspected it again. I had no idea where or how did they come from, but thank God it was only 2-3 small hydroids), they made some zoanthid polyps nearby closed for a couple days until I realized there was something irritating some polyps. I killed em with a tweezer lol and the next day those closed polyps started to reopen. I also had an issue with GHA a long time ago. Small patch of GHA started to grow in the middle of my zoanthid colony, and made them closed. I pulled it out, dip it with 3% H2O2 dilluted with saltwater 50:50 for 2 min. GHA turned white and the zoanthid started to reopen again. Nice & very informative video btw ^_^

how did you identify that it was not a filter feeder? I found what looks like a very small teeny tiny pulsing tentacles kind of like a feather duster worm maybe? but very small.

Thank you Than, another beautiful episode in your series! I was kinda hoping you'd include some info on paly toxines as well because I would consider that as Zoas troubleshooting too:) I recently had a Nero 3 pump making a lot of noise in its new place in the background so at the end of the day I took it away, but accidentally I tore some zoas apart. Got quite sick that night, vomiting etc. If I had seen that zoas had been tied up in the pump I would have used my gas mask with biological filters in it to get rid of it. After a day I had cured quite well. And these zoas weren't by far my most toxic ones. I try getting rid of them by using AiptaCap in them. Never put zoas that will grow fast on your rock structure people. You can't just go about slashing and cutting them away if your health and those of the fish and other corals is dear to you.

Hey! I know its a long shot but i have a question... I bought a colony of 100 or so polyps and they haven't opened since i received them 2 weeks ago =( . A few of them did a little peek, but not fully open for the first few day now theyre mostly all closed =( My parameters are all good and this is my first coral. 2 month old tank with 2 clowns. Amm 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrates 12.7 temp 77-78. I have good flow, ive adjusted their placement to try higher and lower areas... still nothing =(

From 4:08-4:11 it showcases coral that has a few flowing mini sweepers or hydroid that look like they are swaying. Very tiny more on the right side of the screen, looks like a small tube with a flower head that sways in the flow. Can anyone identify these little things? I started to cycle a nano recently and have seen a few travel from some rock and now are clinging onto the back of the filter where the screen is.

One thing I wish you covered was coraline algae. I use to have one of the nicest zoa gardens in NZ but it's slowly being destroyed by plating coraline algae. Seems like there is nothing I can do to prevent this.
@tidalgardens
@tidalgardens 2 года назад
That is true, there are some very fast growing coralline algae out there that can cause trouble with Zoas. Coralline is one of those things that is the lesser of many evils. They prevent other worse algae and look nice but they too are fighting for the same real estate as our corals. A lot of them though do not like high light. A brief boost in light, maybe only a day or two might kill some of it off. Worth a try anyhow, just don't kill your zoas.
@Edgecrusher28
@Edgecrusher28 2 года назад
I have begun to routinely clean off all my zoa frags with a blast of tank water. I have noticed some of my frags will always release thin white layers of what looks like skin or flesh. I thought maybe it was a form of sponge, but it really doesn't appear to be that upon further inspection. All of these frags have great flow, but ultimately not very happy. NVM, looks like this is the wax layer mentioned in the video!

Any suggestions to kalk ato lowering Ca and alk?
@baaa4698
@baaa4698 2 года назад
Lowering?? Kalk should be raising those alk and ca numbers, no?!
@crath3570
@crath3570 2 года назад
@@baaa4698 Kalk is calcium hydroxide. I’m pretty sure the calcium in the kalk was reacting with dissolved carbonate ions and precipitating out of solution as calcium carbonate. This in turn lowered alkalinity and may have lowered the calcium with it.
