Hi guys,
It’s know been quite a while (again) since my last video! I haven’t been able to make philosophy videos in a while simply because I have had a lot of things happen in my personal life that have prevented me from being able to make videos for this channel. So please excuse how rusty my lecturing skills are! Also, I know my explanation might be a little redundant, but one of my main goals as philosopher is to try to break things down in such a way so that kids can understand at least some of the concepts. So when I make these videos, I always try to keep that in mind. Thank you so much for watching! Feel free to leave questions, comments, criticisms, down below.
The two videos that cover more info on physicalism:
1. • Mary's Room Thought Ex...

I’ve been trying my best to mention your channel around the skeptic/RU-vid community. This channel, along with a few others, actually helped in persuading me to take a hiatus from my job in genetics research to further pursue a degree in philosophy. At this point, I’m not sure that one can truly be a good scientist without having a reasonably sufficient understanding of Philosophy of science and epistemology. Keep up the good work 👍.

I deeply appreciate you trying to spread the word about my channel, Andrew!!!! I am hoping to upload more frequently now that I have some free time on my hands. That's so awesome that you're going to pursue a degree in philosophy. I'm hoping to go to grad school for philosophy one day, but unfortunately I'm having to postpone that right now because I'm actually trying to get certified to be a Spanish teacher right now :P. Good luck with your studies! Maybe you can start making some philosophy videos one day and we can collab!!

@@philosophermit8215 No problem👌 I hope it all goes well for you. Spanish is a fun language. Take your time. No rush. As I’m sure you already know philosophy tends to have a rather problematic issue with diversity, so I try to encourage people as much as I can. Philosophy definitely needs more female and minority representation in order to hold itself accountable for potential biases or blind spots, as well as expand its overall viewpoints, so I’m definitely rooting for you. One of these days, I’ll start making some philosophy videos 😆 👍

2:22 *_"i'm just probably gonna say zombie throughout the video because saying philosophical zombie over and over again is kind of exhausting"_* Most people I know just call it a P-zombie. It's way easier to say and type. Goes to show how nerdy we are.

Nice job, I like this. There are relevant neuroscientific arguments. Does the mind create the brain or does the brain create the mind? Look at the debate between neurosurgeon Egnor and philosopher Papineau.

1. Coffee creamer is needed to experience the pleasure of drinking coffee. 2. Only zombies drink black coffee. 3. Thus, zombie Issa does not experience the pleasure of drinking coffee because she does not have creamer 😂 Lol. Humor aside, this was very informative. Do you think you could do a series on the philosophy of science? I think it would be nice to have some sort videos that I could use to reference, revise, and review quickly concerning some of the main topics/issues in the philosophy of science. Great video overall. 👌

What definition are people violating? (In Dennett's critique of premise 1)
@privatprivat7279
@privatprivat7279 3 года назад
this explains why people living on and in a higher conciousness vibration have wider and more viewed experiences then the majority of humanity who thinks those people are crazy.... they are not zombies but they are much less aware (sleeping) then a higher conciousness being so therefore can not se the same experiences as the higher conciousness person sees and experience. just like a person being on drugs experiencing things a person next to him....(not on drugs) does not se and feel and experience because they are not on the same lvl of mind and vibration.

I like your videos, and I do hope you continue making them. I hope you find the inspiration that helps you move through the challenges in your life and help you to share your knowledge and understanding with the World 🙏✨✨✨ Having said that……. This is a subject for people who simply like the exercise of rolling thoughts around in their minds, without those thoughts having any real bearing on their own Reality 😂 A ‘conceivable philosophical zombie’? 🤣😜 Omg, really? And this guy is renowned as a philosopher??? 🤣😂 Listen: the ‘argument’ between ‘materialism/physicalism’ ….. and the REALITY that we are certainly both physical AND non-physical could be swiftly resolved if Scientists and Philosophers alike would turn their focus to the most fundamental aspect of what it means to be Human: Emotion. Are Emotions physical? (I don’t mean the chemicals, I mean the cause of the experience, ie is “LOVE” a PHYSICAL phenomenon?) If they (and their cause) are not physical …. Are they ‘real’? [ People have ‘Emotions’ over hypothetical situations, fiction, imagination, projected assumptions, etc. …. ALL THE TIME!!! ] If they are not ‘real’ …. Why can’t I stop myself from feeling them? [ Some Scientists like to pretend they don’t have emotions …. That’s not the same as actually not experiencing them] Since I can’t stop myself from feeling them, they must have a ‘cause’ beyond my own human physicality. What is that ‘cause’? There IS an answer to this question. It’s in the Veda’s, the Gita, the Yoga Sutras …. It’s in A Course in Miracles, the work of Abraham (and Esther Hicks), and has been answered again and again by metaphysics (not religion) and ‘new age’ systems with clarity and precision. You are NOT simply a Physical Being. Emotions are a function of vibrational relativity between two points of focus that converge in the sensations within your physical body. 1) Your Human Focus 2) Your ‘Non-Physical’ Focus [ Some Systems Call this “Soul”] That’s all I’m going to say about that. When we stop ignoring the actual substance of our Humanity in favor of these disembodied philosophical mind games….. [mental masturbation😜]….. We discover answers that make a lot more sense than any ‘philosophical zombie’ ever could 🧟‍♀️ 🧟‍♂️ 🧟 The problem is that many scientists and philosophers equate ‘spirituality’ with the purposely manipulative fiction of ‘religion,’ and completely ignore huge aspects of Human Experience because of their patent rejection of religious indoctrination. I don’t blame them! I don’t want to be indoctrinated either! But, ironically, their attempt to separate ‘reason’ from actual Human Experience turns their arguments into meaningless mental exercises. ✨🙏✨

Argument from "conceivably possibly" is a bit strange to me. I could conceive of Boeing 747 flying backwards. However this is impossible based on what we know about aerodynamics. I know it's a way of philosophical reasoning, but it doesn't seem legitimate.
@philosophermit8215

Yes, I TOTALLY agree. I honestly think that arguments from conceivability like the zombie argument make no sense, but they're definitely really fun to talk about :P.

@@philosophermit8215 Chalmers did frame the current discussion in philosophy of mind and arguably helped to make the scientific study of consciousness a serious/respectable topic. I have had a very long time interest in the philosophy of mind but from the perspective of an engineer and a wannabe neuroscientist. It wasn't until a few years ago that I finally took a class in the subject via edX (MIT Mind and Machines). Professor Alex Bryne taught the class. The content was a survey of the subject (dualism, identity theory, behaviorism, functionalism, internalism vs externalism, knowldge) and a good introduction to philosophical reasoning.

I always found the topic of p zombies quite odd. Imagine we were all p zombies in this given moment and consciousness never existed, u reckon we would be even discussing this topic at all lool. But yeah I have a really good arguments against p zombie (with scienfic proof e.g. sensory deprivation test on animals and etc), but I cannot ever understand the existence of qualia, or the reason why am I conscious specifically to this brain and not other brains. Just my 2 cents, anyways nice video keep it up!!!

Yeeeeeeeeet! I am SO glad you enjoyed the video. I was nervous about posting it because I know it's not necessarily my best video stylistically, but I am trying to work on uploading more frequently and so I have been experimenting with the way I edit. I find the argument to be super odd and not very convincing as well. I do think it is a super fun argument to talk about though, especially with folks that have never heard the argument before! I would love to hear more about your arguments against p zombies!

I like your videos on the philosophy of mind. Could you do a short video describing your interests in the subject? For instance, whether the subject is a core part of your academic focus or whether it is just an interesting side to something else you're studying. Is your interest religious or scientific or purely philosophical? And what is your thought about mental states? What do you think they are? Or your thoughts on panpsychism and theories like Johnjoe McFadden's cemi theory?

@@cyberneticqualanaut7207 @Cybernetic Qualanaut I like it better too. I was in a bit of a rush with this one towards the end because I am preparing for a test that I have to take soon and the editing was taking away from my study time. I would love to make more videos like the Hume video, but my stock video subscription is about to end here in December, so I won't be able to use stock videos anymore since I don't want to pay another $600 to resubscribe :/. So, unfortunately, if I decide to make more videos in the future they will probably end up looking more like my older videos of just me talking. I'm also thinking I won't be using as much background music like I have done in all of my previous videos because it makes the editing process much longer for me. One of the main reasons why I stopped making videos for this channel is because the editing is always so time-consuming :/, so I am trying to come up with ways to make the editing process faster and less tedious.
