*I hope this is an ultimate in-depth review for the ZTE Nubia Flip. I tried to cover everything I can on this phone for people looking to purchase one of these. Hopefully I've been able to deliver* A massive thank you to ZTE for sending me this sample out for review! I really do appreciate it! I hope this video has covered most of the main things about the phone. While we had the small hiccup with the first unit at least the second was great for the review. You can purchase it here if you like: bit.ly/3xYAQLQ Nubia Official: intl.nubia.com/ My opinions in this video are my own, I am not being paid by ZTE they have just sent out the sample for me to review which is what I like to do. It was Royole first. Then Samsung with their Fold and sometime around there was the Motorola RAZR 2020. Then other manufacturers followed in the last few years including Tecno, Oppo, Blackview, Huawei etc. Microsoft made the Surface Duo but that didn't have a foldable display.
@@SMOOREZ Yeah, Royole did it like one year earlier than the Fold 1 prototype sent to the press and destroyed by them, as being probably the least reliable phone ever seen. They fixed it later for the commercial release, so it took like one year and a half from the Royole to the second foldable ever, the fixed Fold 1. But, to be fair, Samung showcased their foldable technology a few years earlier (2011 or 2013) than Royole (2017). And the first flexible OLED screen implementation ever was the Samsung Note Edge in 2014. I own the Royole Flexpai and it is an interesting device. But it is as fragile as it gets, it has TONS of warnings the first time you boot it, it's not really usable due the massive hinge, barebones OS (WaterOS) and many other problems. But, in opinion, it has the best aspect ratio ever seen in a foldable. Foldable phones are only worth for reading, so square screen doesn't make sense whatsoever, like in the modern foldable phones. Currently I own the Flexpai, Mate X2, Fold 3, Fold 4 and Mix Fold 3. Being the Xiaomi my daily driver. I love foldables xD
How interesting - I've repaired hundreds of Z Flip devices (you are correct - it is quite difficult for the outer display half), and the inside of this phone looks virtually identical to the internal layout of the current iteration of Flips. Suspecting ZTE let the big players figure out how to properly mature the manufacturing and then followed suit. Smart.
Replacing a defective device is not anything that needs to be praised. Its the lowest bar you need to pass as a company to not be illegal in most countries.
On a basic level everyone agrees with you. What you're describing is an ideal situation. We don't live in that perfect world. This channel being a private business reviewing a private business should be taken into account. This channel has been transparent about receiving products without further compensation or approval from those companies. Any reasonable person will recognize that maintaining the possibility for future relationships will require a minimal level of respect and decency. This channel thanking the company for replacing a defective device they volunteered for review will certainly help them acquire more products from other companies in the future, whereas you're completely obvious and unnecessary statement would be a deterrence. In simpler terms, you're stating what most already know through context or reading between the lines. Have you ever heard the saying 'you'll catch more files with honey than vinegar'? If this were government run on either end you'd have a compelling point. As they aren't, you're stating the obvious at best, misunderstanding the intention from ignorance, or worst of all you're plain stupid and trying to start shit because boredom, loneliness, attention, who cares. Enjoy the channels content for what it is and be grateful. Stop being an ass.
@@jsutrov Huh, I have a stalker aparently. I made the comment because it is important to keep such things in mind. A company replacing your broken device isnt special. You have a right to have it replaced in most countries. A right that a lot of people seem to have forgotten recently.
I've been using ZTE devices off and on since 2015, the one device I had was an absolute unit, I absolutely abused mine till it was disintegrating, and it STILL KEPT WORKING!
i do love your videos because they cover almost everything on a device, so i understand that for someone it's way too long but for those devices is good to cover as much as possible. and yes, after a welcome device everything with decent specs is a flagship lol. i see some potential in this but i don't like foldable phones so i'll pass. it's good tho for someone who is not sure and wants to try them somehow.
46:00 Speaking of folding phones and needing to be careful with them, my Motorola Razr 40 Ultra's screen suddenly stopped working, out of the blue. It still looked like it's in perfect condition, and the screen itself did "work", but didn't respond to touches at all. Luckily I got a full refund for it and I've had my 8 months of fun with it, I could've got a replacement, but since the " fresh new phone" magic wears off after a bit, I ended up going back to a regular phone. It was a great phone when it worked though! Just thought I'd share my experiences if anyone happens to be thinking about trying one out. I did take good care of it, and like I said, the phone looked still brand new. But I guess it's nice to know that if (probably when) it goes wrong, getting a refund or replacement should hopefully be as seemless and easy as it was for me.
Send it to Hugh Jeffreys, he will fix it probably (if it's possible. I'd imagine parts are hard to find for less popular devices). p.s. He mentioned you in one the recent videos about Welcome devices from Ali
I had a ZTE portable modem once. One night i realized it's battery had swollen up to a point where the whole back had cracked open. Tried to rip the battery out but it was glued in and started spewing smoke. Threw it outside where the spicy pillow eventually emptied it's guts out. Never bought another ZTE product again and never will.
@@oxaile4021I had a free Zte government phone and its battery got swollen as well. It didn't go nuclear, but I stopped using it. I wasn't a huge fan of my other Zte phone, but it was faster and cheaper and had better cameras than my newer Sammy A20. A20 had the most garbage processor and cameras. I'm happy with my Pixel 6a
@@oxaile4021 You do realize that it have no sense? company that create thousands of products, including cheap ones that you probably got, and you will not buy ANY other of their products because one bad you had... and I bet your abused that modem or left it on sun/cold or moist environment because, no kidding. 90% of issues like that ARE made by user :D Its like buying cheap samsung washing machine and complain on internet that you will never buy anything from samsung! or buying like water from nestle and saying you will never gonna eat their chocolate or any other product! your logic... damn...
Whoa, a well known brand / current phone? I am aware of this but I'll totally watch. My main issue with foldables (specifically Moto and Samsung) is actually the horrendous cameras. Impress me ZTE!
I had a ZTE flip phone back in 2002ish. Was a good phone, did everything I needed back then. Which was basically make calls and text but hey, it was a different time.
My first smart phone was a ZTE warp sequent. Was a really good device at the time. Had a good root community in the jelly bean era. Never had issues out of it out of odd room issues
I had the Axon 7. There were a lot of little controversies on their U.S. forums regarding the phone like sacrificing screen space to add physical navigation buttons, even though other markets got the bigger screen instead. It performed pretty well, but I started noticing signs of burn-in after only 2 months so I switched back to Samsung.
Also side note but i just want a phone with two regular glass screens that clamshells like a Nintendo ds. I do not understand the point of foldable displays that can only fold for so many times before inevitably getting damaged. What is the use case for foldable phones? If i want to watch media on a big screen I already have a tablet or a laptop. I cant pocket the phone folded anyway because the screen is too delicate and women's clothing hates having pockets so if im already carrying a handbag I might as well carry a tablet. At least with two glass screens i could multi task by having two apps open at once and the durability would still be there. Nobody has given me a real reason id want a phone like this yet :/
if you want a clamshell that can sometimes plays CoD then that's where the problem will rear its ugly head tho. Oh and what of you watch RU-vid, the one you are commenting now?
@@baoquoc3710 I don't want a clamshell phone to play CoD I want it to have Google docs open on one screen and like chrome in the other so I can work on it. Or a thesaurus app on one side and Google docs on the other. I'm a writer. Also I have no idea what you mean by that second part.
@@strayiggytvMicrosoft made a folding phone that was two separate screens, but the bugger was huge. I don't think it lasted long, though. I think HTC had a phone you could attach a case/screen to that would allow different apps on each of the screens, but also didn't last long.
@@AdamIsUrqed the Microsoft Duo would have been perfect for me but it was a glitchy mess. It also had chronic touch screen issues :/ the other one if I remember correctly was really expensive when it launched and was markets as a "gamer" phone lol
I've never understood these flip foldables. This is probably a good introduction to foldables though. I've had a fold 4 since release. I enjoy the small screen on the front as a small phone. Unfold when I want to get busy. I've had one disaster. The main board went out. Out of nowhere. I was just using the phone folded and it went black and wouldn't turn on.
A really great video. I'm on my second viewing lol. You've given me a lot to think about re folding phones. I've never really been all that bothered by them but I might have to rethink when I next update my phone. I'm not totally convinced just yet. The camera test did produce some really nice photos, but. Yes sorry there's a but. I originally watched this video on my LG tv downstairs in the lounge using the RU-vid app on my Sky Q box and most of the pictures hurt my eyes. I think it was because my eyes were trying to focus properly on the images and no matter how hard they tried they failed. Yes I'm old lol longsighted wermaring varifocals with prisms to correct double vision but still for some reason this made my eyes hurt. Some of the cameras on the Welcome phones have produced better pictures in my opinion. There were some really great photos though. I really like the night selfie in half light. That's a really cracking photo. I did like the zoom photos. Ii found the videos way better to watch with less eye strain. One of my cats Miss Dervla was staring at the tv when Miss Ripley made an appearance. 😂 The screen resolution is pretty fantastic and the sound came across really well through my tv. I have a Samsung galaxy A54 with the same set up with speakers. So I was impressed by how well they came across. I've never really got into gaming but the games to look awesome. I can see that the 256gb of storage would filled pretty quickly as I believe Genshin Impact is about 35 gb ( I think I got that from another RU-vidr- Tech Spurt). So not having an SD card slot on anything with lower storage could be an issue. I love music 🎶. So I like to store as much of my music as I can. However, I try to not to use mp3 and go for less compressed files ie lossless. These take up a lot of storage. So again an SD card slot is pretty important to me. I don't mind there not being a headphone socket fitted as dongles are fine for wired headphones and I can use USB C to 3.5mm jack cable for in the car to use the AUX in on the car stereo. So for me the camera and the hinge issue are off putting, but not completely. In a few years with a couple of new versions released things could be better. I do have one very strange question. Is the screen protected that same soft, squishy feeling as the Samsung foldable? I didn't like the texture personally and I've a few family and friends with autism where texture can be a massive issue. Again a great video and I do appreciate all the effort you put into doing them. 😂
I just got the new Razr 50 (or Razr 2024, as it's called here in the US) for $550. This is a neat phone but it has too many drawbacks for nearly the same price.
Rabbit R1 suggested to Zack from Jerryrigeverything that he should take up a less destructive hobby. This happened when he showed Rabbit R1 one of his Jerryrigeverything knives and asked "Where can I buy this? "
@@Waldherz My Fold 4 hasn't picked up many scratches. The factory inner screen protector fell off a few months ago (it started bubbling around the crease) and since I have the extended warranty I haven't bothered replacing it. The inner screen picked up one scratch straight down the middle, about 3cm long, and I can see mild rainbow distortion on light backgrounds. As for the crease, it isn't noticeable unless there's direct sunlight behind you so it hasn't bothered me, although you can feel it when doing swipe gestures. And as for the front display, I didn't bother putting on a protector and it has picked up some mild scratches. Not noticeable unless it's hit by direct sunlight. I got my phone for US$1,000 on discount (a Google Fi promo offer) and it was barely worth the price for me compared to typically spending US$500 on midrange and used phones. But the user experience is definitely better, so if you're like me and spend a lot of time watching videos or doing finances or shopping, the big inner screen could be worth it.
I get that it’s novel and quirky, but I’m just not sure why anybody would want a folding phone. It’s not really significantly smaller in the pocket, but you risk creasing/breakage.
Still too expensive. Especially for a 6,5/10 phone. I probably wouldn't risk buying this if I ever wanted to get a foldable phone. I'd just go all out and by a Samsung Galaxy. The flip4 is even less expensive in my country.
I have only ever used one ZTE device, it was a $20 prepaid phone I used to find work when everything fell apart. Absolute piece of junk, but I owe so much to that one little device.
Considering used / refurbished high end foldables are cheaper than that no I'd never buy one. But its nice that new foldables are getting cheaper even tho I'd never buy a foldable in general.
Yeah, so my z3 flip took a lot of damage, and after I order the replacement screen, the screen was all better like it self healed itself the sides of small defect on the side, which is normal never even got to put in the replacement screen I bought might just buy boards and build Z flip 5 then sorry I’m not really paying attention to the video right now. Still enjoy watching it though.
I've just seen a lot of them fail. I used a Z Flip in 2020 and loved it but when going to Ewaste, I was scared I'd break the display. I used a Flip 3 but once again felt the same. I ended up using a Fold 2 with a dead inner screen for a bit and that was bulletproof. But I like the concept of folding phones but I just don't think they are that strong given how fragile that oled is. Yeah they've gotten a bit stronger but one little nick to it and it's gone. I'm just being honest here with my experience.
@@SMOOREZ ya they definitely aren't durable enough to really rely on as a daily driver yet. I've had two flips and a fold and they've always been one of my phones but not my main phone for the same reasons
Bruh. 😂 Asphalt Nitro 2 kept yelling at you that TouchDrive was enabled. You also were in the settings screen, in the controls tab, where it showed all the control schemes. 😂 You can play the game with the accelerometer, you just didn't.
My old zte axiom m still works but one screen is warm temperature and the other is cold color wise. Like its an insane difference that makes it pretty unusable lol
Not a fan of the folded screen you can see the crease no matter what👎 can't see that device lasting long its crease workings will break now and the LED will end up ruined
The phone has a rather tiny (~20.5 sq-mm) Samsung ISOCELL JN1 50MP camera sensor, the exact same one I've on my $100 Xiaomi. Not the best camera sensor available, not by a long shot, but it's definitely larger than the one on the original iPhone X and can take pretty decent shots... so long as you use GCam. Otherwise, it's more or less hopeless as Chinese smartphones in general have pretty terrible computational photography algorithms baked into their camera apps.
I couldn't find it on any spec sheets so I googled the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 and it said it supports LPDDR5X so that's where I got that from. I may be incorrect though.
and i think this phone is pretty good i live in china so i don't know how good it with Google because is not my phone i can't try it this video is really helpful to let me know is good with Google
The ZTE Grand Max+ was the best phone. Still have it. Use it with OBS as an extra camera. The size, shape, response was amazing. Very "2001: A Space Odyssey" monolith shape. Think it's Android 7, but OBSDroid still supports it.
I thought when I click this its tecno because the only foldable or flip phone I know that cheap is tecno Also the design they just almost the same for me
I can't call this a cheap phone, for having a foldable screen I'd call it "affordable". You get what you pay for with it. On the other hand foldable screens don't last as long as I use my phone, ergo the reduced lifespan of the device more than doubles it's cost. I won't buy one until they have an acceptable lifespan, using it every day shouldn't result in the destruction of the screen.
"our manager's crazy, he always smokes dust \ he's got his own room at the back of the bus " -Beastie Boys PS: There was a ZTE phone used in the free ObamaPhone program and that one (the Sprint variant) had spyware built into the Wireless Update app. Just sayin'. ZTE claims Sprint put the spyware on there, and I could see that being the case.
You need to sacrifices alot just for the folding feature .Camera is mediocre ,cpu is mediocre ,charging is slow ,questionable "20gb" of ram ,the faulty hinge ..It's a big disappointment in my eyes
