Greetings and welcome to another cheapo phone review!
This phone has been one that's been around for a long time and you folks wanted to see it and I have finally delivered the Sugar A100 phone review!
This $86 AUD phone is basic but what it doesn't have...it makes up for in character. You'll see in the video!
But I actually thought this wasn't a bad phone by any means. Especially for a young kids first phone...or a "ladys" phone according to the AliExpress listing.

You can pick different bundles, the phone by itself is cheaper by $10 but come on...the box is pretty cool!

It's the perfect gift to give to the kids of some relatives you can't stand. Just like one of those crappy drum sets for kids. You can act all nice and generous, the kids will love it and you can make their parents' lives a living hell :D

Surprisingly this design actually has a Red Dot design award from 2019, under the name "TIGER P180". Seems like the design was "originally intended" as a smart translator device, i.e. an OEM phone design running android which could be used for Google Translate. Or Baidu translate, I remember real-time translation being a popular gimmick around 2016-2019.

18:58 The reason why it did not work initially is because it had like 4% battery life but now that you charged the battery well enough it works now.

To be fair most current Android devices tell you this when you try to use the flash or camera on a low battery. It'll pop up a message on the screen. "Cannot use flash/camera because the battery is too low, please charge your device" or something very similar to that. This phone just didn't do it and didn't tell you why which is odd.

I think its below 10% Even though most devices now do low power at 20% instead of 15%, i think flash still turns off at 10%

I've seen Sugar a few times (rarely) in Taiwan. Even here, it's basically demoted as the lowest of lows kinda device. Also the box directly translates to Sugar Language Learning Magic Cube - basically confirming that the device is more or less targeted towards children.

As you said, this is device has pretty decent specs for the price. I would have definitely considered purchasing for my kids when they were younger as a first device. Crazy how the Sugar A100 beats out a Welcome device for a third the cost!

@@UserUser-ww2nj honestly if it's using sbc full spec probably fine. Fun fact sbc has various settings and is so well known as bad because old devices used low to mid end settings. At full quality settings it actually holds its own, though it's latency is eh.

@@FinnFann I have never gone into the different Bluetooth settings , with me it works or does not work 😄😄. A lot of the time i am scared to alter any of those kinds of settings in case i either brick the phone or screw something up 😭

@@UserUser-ww2nj Oh that's the thing you can't change them. Part of the reason SBC gets such a negative perception. Even on modern android it's 100% up to the phone maker what SBC settings your phone tells the headphones it can use. Luck of the draw.

If you want to dump system files, it's pretty easy to dump the entire storage on MTK phones using SP Flash, no matter the Android version.

Sugar was once listed here in Hong Kong, mainly focusing of selfie experiences. I had a few friends who bought Sugar phones but they said the experience was pretty bad.

I have a top of the line, XiaoMi 12S Ultra. It's got a Snapdragon 8gen +1 processor, 16 gigs of ram, 512 of storage, a 50MP 1inch CMOS sensor, a 5 times optical zoom, I don't even know what the ultra-wide sensor is, or the front camera, but let's just say, everything is REALLY high quality. It's a banger of a phone, more than I need in all regards and better than so many phones out there on the market. And yet... I can't bring myself to stop watching this review of a phone that is so weak, and yet so intriguing. :D You make awesome videos. Thank you for your presentation, I thoroughly enjoyed watching.

I had a quick look for this on Aliexpress, not available . I did see a feature that was interesting though provided i have not got phones mixed up. It can read books for kids , there is a holder , put the book in front of it and it can read , maybe that is why the big speaker . Also developed as a learning device for kids

If you want to try dumping the system files for people to peek around a bit, since it is a Mediatek device with a 2018 security patch level, there's a chance you could use mtk-su to get root access and dump files that way (whether it be by using dd to directly dump whole partitions or by just copying files somewhere else)

I dont know why but I love look of that phone, its just so.... different. Camera was a bit weird, images where meh, but videos where really good. Im not sure but when you where where checking it on live stream I was seriously convinced that that speaker can rotate... It would be awesome to rotate it but still... nice as it is.

I think this can be a good budget smartphone since it has play store access you could do the usual things like writing notes or using gps, only spending less time because it would drive you mad. Though the girly design and probably terrible call signal lets it down. I’d recommend a larger battery version of this for someone that has a tablet as their primary device and doesn’t want to spend much money.

I think the issue with the camera light is a common issue I too had back in android 8. I think it was early to have android have a built in light button. It is almost like the software can't start the light so you need to open camera and try again.(Reminds me IDENTICALLY to when you power on your phone the fingerprint scanner wont start but once you unlock it, it works every time.)

Many phones (even when plugged in and charging) won't allow use of flashlight when in single digit battery life. And given that the icon wasn't even going into "on" mode, I'm pretty sure it was locked out when you were trying. You've used phones before, no?

I didn't think of it at the time. I usually don't have devices that are at a low percentage and be testing them. I did know about it, just flew right past me since I was too focused on the phone and how it performed etc

It would be great if you can get an infrared camera for future reviews. You could get one of those cheap ruggedized phones with heat cameras and review it as well. It would be a good addition.

I picked one a blue one after watching. Not a bad little device at all, especially for $50USD. Took 11 days to arrive in the southwest US. It is vulnerable to mtk-su, so it can be temporarily rooted very easily. Do note, however, that rooting this phone seems to wipe both IMEI numbers. The bootloader is also unlocked by default (which you can just barely catch at 16:42 in the video) but I've been unable to permanently root it thus far.

The flashlight did not work because the battery was below 5%. Some Phones restrict the usage of the torch and some other functions when the battery is low. Depends on the brand most likely

For the bands, this phone wouldn't work well in Australia and have greatly reduced coverage since its missing the major long range bands here in Australia. (B28 for Telstra & Optus, B5 for Vodafone)

Oh... No system dump this time. :( It would have been fun to play around with the Sugar-specific apps. Also the flash didn't work because the battery was too low. If i remember correctly, flash only works over 5% battery charge.

This is the kind of goofy out there stuff that mid 2000's phone manufacurers used to do, like Nokia and LG. Odd and unusual designs is how cell phones became popular outside of business circles to begin with, after all. Kinda wish more modern manufacturers still did these sorts of things.

Manufacturer could just disable 60fps video on YT and it would play 720p fine. Can't believe almost no one does this. You can do it manually with yt vanced, set phone model to SGS 1 and 720p would play fine, maybe even 1080p. My phone from 2014 with mtk6572 could play 720p fine

a lot of these phones use older chips that require the camera to be initalized once (per boot, usually) to activate the flash light. the reason it didn't work the first time was likely because the camera wasn't initalized and since its running android 8, it doesn't know to activate the camera since most devices doesn't require this step anymore.

@@tylern6420 generally, in older versions of Android, the torch activated the camera as well. newer ones don't, to preserve battery, but they require you to open the camera first to initialize it so the torch, which is a part of it, can be enabled. it drains the battery quicker tho so yeah

Most Android phones won't allow the flashlight to turn on if the battery charge state is below a certain level (about 15%) in order to ensure the battery can be used for phone calls instead.

The only issue is that 16 gigs just isn’t enough for most kids with the games and apps they like. I remember trying to do basic stuff with 16 gigs and it was miserable. 2 gigs of ram might be ok but the memory just holds it back considering how cheap storage space really is.
