As a plus size disabled person who's realized they're going to have to make their own clothes, this is invaluable.

Oh how I miss the theatre, I retired some years ago but those fast changes still haunt my dreams. What shows did you work, I was a dresser on "Le Miz", "Wicked", "Beauty and the Beast", and did many side jobs doing day work. The bag of rags as we called it at L M, was a huge cardboard box under the sewing table.

Once you've done a theater quick change you never forget it! Once I heard the same music that was a show quick change cue on a tv show I was watching and immediately went into "quick change Elise from party dress to work outfit" mode...a year after that show closed, lol. Nowadays in "I work in a costume shop in NYC making costumes for Broadway and TV mostly. (though not at the moment)

Loved this, I've been looking forward to this video! I also keep a bag of scraps from finished projects and it's saved me several times when it comes to alterations and repairs. I also rarely line my garments, flatlining and finishing seams is sufficient! I've never heard of ballet hooks until now, that is brilliant!

Thanks! Ballet loops are the actual best, SO handy for storage!

Wow, very helpful! Great tips! That Tudor dress is fabulous! I love that you used a curtain. ;-) I love the ballet loop idea - I think I will use that on a project I'm planning!

Thanks! A surprising amount of my historical wardrobe is curtains 😂 I hope the ballet loops work out for you!

Great tips as always! Heck yes, team use whatever fabric is at hand. I'm gonna stop trimming my seam allowances. Also if people don't have sergers, a lot of machines have an overlock/overcast stitch and foot that works well. It's not as clean, but it's effective!

Thanks for watching! And yes, absolutely that would also work!

I really love your way of thinking! Can't beleive that I did not stumble upon your channel much earlier! (Have followed historical and theatrical costumes for years! I am Norwegian and a teacher, so I've made a costume for Nora from "A doll's house" by Ibsen, that we teach in 10th grade at school.)

The use of curtain fabric in historical fabric always makes me smile. And howdy theater colleague. I’m a theatrical scenic artist, whose done theater and opera all over the US. My best friends are always the costumers.

Sometimes it's the best option on a limited budget! I've certainly made many a theater costume out of fabric that was never intended to go on a person's body, haha.

I make kids costumes for hire, and use the technique of using wider seam allowances, to make adjusting the costume easier. I overlock all the edges of the fabric BEFORE I sew the garment together with a sewing machine. Again, this makes it easy to adjust the seams were necessary.

Absolutely a great plan for kid's costumes!

I love it! I use all of these techniques myself, but always feel hush hush about it because it can make some people really mad. I'd love to see more detail about how you end your bias binding on at the edges of your bodice pieces. I always feel like mine look clunky.
2 месяца назад
I usually run the bias binding off the edges, then serge the whole edge of the piece together rather than fold under the bias as it gets too lumpy that way.

I just found your channel and I found most of these tips quite helpful. Thank you so much! Genius having the extra seam allowance, bag of scrap fabric for projects, and how you put zippers in but strategically placed fabric around it to cover. Loved that tip and I plan on using it for my own historically inspired clothes.
