Exactly what we said: it's just a fun song. Braggadocious. Like the phrases "refine rap to a fine art, Vincent Van Gogh" and "Streets can be bleak / But bleak was the place where I rose to my feet." Other fun ones: "Losing It," "Humble," "Power," and "Ocean" Great reaction as usual!
This one is a fun one! Ren had fun with the flow switches and the beatboxing We all wish we were the random person hanging out in the background watching the video shoot 😹
Yeah, this a fun flex song putting people on notice that he's bringing the skills and the knowledge. It's one of my favorites just for the vibe alone and the beats and flows are extra sauce.
Good stuff, man. Yeah, this is just a fun one. It's just Ren flexing as a rapper. Sure, he's got some lyrics in there there have a point b/c it's Ren and he produces his own beats (hear him beat boxing in there) but mostly imo it's just fun. Now, I would highly suggest completely switching things up. Check out a vid called "The Big Push - I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop". Completely different sound. It's just a vibe. He's out busking w/ his band so they're on the street in a live performance.
Yep, and be aware that Ren's done multiple versions of Sheriff over the years, with The Big Push and on his own... BE SURE to pick the one with the exact title Ryan's mentioned here (as he indicated, it's on The Big Push's channel) - you'll be sure you've got the right one if the thumbnail is Ren in red suspenders. All the videos I've seen involving Ren doing I Shot the Sheriff are worth watching, but the videos from that "red suspenders Ren" busking session are a different level of MAGIC.
1:45 I'm not a Ren cultist, but I deeply love what he is doing (and has done). He is such a fresh voice and a real talent. I can enjoy him so much, despite him possibly having very opposing views on topics. Like here, for example... he speaks of raising his fist in solidarity with the anti-capitalist young university people that seem to have been indoctrinated. The same young people that are drowning in the latest phone and drinking garbage coffee at £5.00 a pop. But then he goes and mentions "Jamming (to) Django Reinhardt" in a Primark carpark, and it's amazing. I would guess over 90% of Ren's more militant commentors have no idea who Django Reinhardt is/was. If they did, they would have been like me and instantly connected many of his guitar motifs from oldschool Gypsy Jazz themes. Ren gave a shout out to a legend and rightly speaking about some of his inspirations. I love it.
I think you're being a bit presumptuous, just as there are many fans who have no idea who Django Reinhardt is, I'm equally sure you (and I) are missing a tonne of other references to artists and art forms / techniques that other fans are aware of.
Yep - there are apparently only a couple of exceptions to that statement (other than what he labels "retakes," where he takes someone else's track and puts his own lyrics over it), I think Sick Boi being one of those exceptions.
I think this song is about his hunger for success, for lack of a better word. Loved that skeptical smile on your face in the beginning. Your reactions are great!
It's funny, I was listening to this thinking of my 12 yr old son. He's starting to find things he really likes and, as he gets older, getting a hunger to getting better at them. Hits at a different place from 12 to Ren's 30s, but I see some parallels.
Seven Sins is the lead track on his just-released album and I really don’t think you are going to say “eh” about any of it. Top song for me right now, but if it’s his old shit you want then throw on LOSING IT - FISHER RAP RETAKE. The sample track is an extensively resampled track from Australian EDM composer, Fisher. The words are all Ren and it’s maddeningly chock-full of callouts to both pop culture and hip hop. I had to set up a speadsheet to track all the references and it’s only a 4:20 video.
Caution Captain obvious incoming : "Genuine Frankenstein, I made a monster" - this whole song is a patchwork of cadences like Frankenstein's monster is a patchwork of human parts...
The people in the background were folks who actually lived/ hung out where they were filming, iirc. Glad you got started on the "lighter side" of Ren. Or at least, the not quite so intense side.
I've got two suggestions for where to go in Ren's catalog. First, Losin' It (Fisher Rap Retake). Spitting bars over an instrumental EDM classic. The other would involve two songs: Kingdom Come by King Dotta (The opening shot to start a rap battle with Ren), and Ren's Dumb King Come (The reply, in classic battle-rap style, with a totally Ren twist). Glad to see you've gotten to some of the fun ones. Hope you enjoy where the rabbit hole takes you from here!
It's a Ren origin story track, a "this is who I am and where I come from" song, but where he doesn't delve into his medical problems beyond indirect references to them. Love the gritty "industrial" beat on this one with the sample... idk, it's not chimes, it's not a cow bell... maybe striking a pipe with a drumstick? and the beatboxing he added.
Power is hands-down my most replayed Ren song. The *top* of the list of my faves belong to Hi Ren/Sick Boi, but with those I feel like I'm missing something if I haven't sat down to watch the video, so Power actually gets played more often. Chalk Outlines (the live version, not the studio recording) is right up there too, but that one is so heavy it's like I don't often play it *except* when I want to sit down and watch the video (also I just love watching the 2 of them interacting musically).
He wrote this from his bedroom in 2015. Says there are 1,000 songs on his hard drive from when he was too sick to leave his room. When he has the mental capacity, all he did was write. What a treasure trove!
I have found 186 (& counting) songs that Ren is a part of. Ive listened to little less than half of them and intend to listen to the rest. Quite remarkable I cannot say i dislike any of them so far....... RENegade ❤ 4EVA
Love Music 1-4, are fun, and just that, for the love of music and all show off his rap skills, and “Illest of our time” is exactly what the title says 😁. The Hunger is one of my favorites. Great to see your reaction.
Great reaction TheBlackSeed. You should reaction his live street work. His old band The big push doing “I shot the sheriff” and “war pigs 🐷” Also when he sings in the streets with Sam Tompkins “Man’s World” Then you will see his old work where he is flowing in the music with the street audience. “The place where he rose to his feet”
Haha yeah people have been wanting me to do his old band for quite some time. May even have a nice old fashioned live react to that and have a good time! We shall see.
You have to ask yourself why Ren has such avid followers really. As one myself, I can tell you that I think it's because we have been constantly surprised by his intelligence, creativity, talent, honesty, emotiveness, vulnerability, perseverance and uniqueness. As a 52 year old woman who has never really liked rap (apart from the odd Eminem track and Gangster's Paradise) or most hip hop, grew up with 80s musical talent, I suddenly find myself liking Ren's music..song after song after song. Why? Because of all of the above plus the depth of each one, how he says things, the thought and effort that goes into each one and the man's insane performance abilities etc...Ren is a thinking person's artist, forcing your brain to analyse his work because he doesn't force feed you everything. He gives you a bit of wiggle room for your mind to roam around his songs. Even the silly ones because if the song isn't a deep one, Ren will compensate with rapping ability, the beat, beatboxing, rhyming schemes etc...and hence why he never really misses. Even when he doesn't create music, Ren is still impressive. For example have you watched his 'Thanks for 2 million subscribers' speech? Then, needless to say as we've gotten to know Ren and his struggles, we have become fiercely protective of him too. His expression of his suffering is so raw, honest and vulnerable, that we can all feel an instant connection with Ren and would not want him to go through any more than he already has. Because of this, I can let pass some lyrics that I might not necessarily like. Just because one song may not be a par with some of the others in my particular taste, doesn't mean I won't support him and won't love the rest. Weirdly enough sometimes, I find that I may find myself really liking a song after not having a good first impression of it which is so weird. But there you go. I suppose that's the way I see why Ren has amassed such a cult following. Funnily enough, many of Ren's fans are older than you'd expect. Try doing a survey and you'll see what I mean. Many are from my era, disappointed with modern music. The artist I had been impressed with previous to Ren is a Spanish artist called Rosalía. She similarly is very intelligent, creative and does most things herself (although nowadays she has much more help). Her three albums are incredible with very unique songs and styles too. Her visuals are little works of art that she has a huge say in creating etc..If you ever want to check her out I can suggest songs like Malamente, Saoko, A Palé and La Fama for four completely different styles if u ever wanted to check her out.
I share your thoughts and like your approach, keep going, you great man! After watching hunger and money game i would definitely recommend the animal flow, its in the same lane, but a bit different, you want be disappointed!
I think I actually heard that on the Saturday Night Stream I did, believe it or not! I'll have to double check, and if I did, I'll rip it out of the stream so you don't have to watch the whole thing just for that react.
Ren's an incredible artist. It's a shame that you limit yourself to rap though because although Ren's rap lyrics are world-class class and although he can rap like a rap god, Ren does EVERY genre brilliantly, doesn't really do bad tracks and has produced at least a dozen, probably closer to 2 dozen, bona fide masterpieces! A true musical genius! A once in a generation talent! :)
Lol I'm going to do it once I figure out the Membership stuff. I told yall I got a trip coming up haha. So it has to take a backseat. I got yall on Discord. It'll happen. :)
AH! If that's what you're responding to, my fault! You may be right, I don't even remember, I have like 100 videos going through my head at one time at all times haha. I appreciate you, good looks.@@sharttank5999
