About me:
I am a practising artist, a secondary school art teacher with 20 years of experience and an IB assistant examiner since 2007. I have supervised Visual Arts Extended Essays since 2005 and spent a year as a Higher Ed Careers Adviser to get an even broader view.
I am passionate about art and I love the idea of contributing (in my small way) to the future generation of artists - that's YOU!
Love,

@@IBArtwithMzA Thank you! :-) Would you maybe consider making videos for teachers as well? I need any advice and inspiration possible. But all in all I cannot wait to start teaching IB (tomorrow) :-)

@Barbara Guttman I'm very happy to make videos on any IB Art related subject. I envisaged the videos to be mainly for IB students but also as talking points for teachers. I'd love to hear what you would like me to cover specifically. All the best!

Hello Mrs A, i realy find your videos very helpful, if you could just explain what SL and HL students could choose for each project from the table of Art making forms. Thank you so much🙏

Thanks for your comment Roula! :) The students (SL and HL) can choose a theme (optional) like the examples in this video. Then, SL students have to work in at least 2 art forms from 2 separate columns (columns: 2D, 3D or digital/photography/film). The HL students have to work in a minimum of 3 art forms from at least 2 columns. Maybe these two videos can help: How do I start my IB Art? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YYM8_hezJ2I.html HL vs SL: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gq1_of-7smc.html Best of luck!

So as you mentioned, there are themes that you look at through all three pieces of coursework. I am in my second year of IB art and my teacher told me that my themes don't need to link between the CS and PP or the exhibition. Hence my CS is more focused on Nature, my PP on environmentalism and my exhibition is about identity, specifically mental health. Now I am slightly concerned that I am doing it wrong. My teacher had told me that the three pieces of coursework don't need to link but I am not so sure now. Thanks.

Thanks for leaving a comment, Sophia. All that I share is based on my own interpretation of the IB curriculum and experience. The CS and PP lead up to the Exhibition, so it makes sense to me that you are building your coherent body of work (Exhibition) with your research (CS) and your process (PP). The 3 components overlap and feed into each other, and by having a focal point (overall theme) you are strengthening and deepening your investigation. To me, the Exhibition is justified and arrived at by way of the CS and the PP (as should ideally be evident in the Curatorial Rationale). However, a theme is NOT required by IB, so it is simply how I would organise my own students' work. Also, the CS and the PP are marked by your teacher, and the Exhibition is marked by an external examiner (who does not see your CS and PP - but you may refer to them in your Curatorial Rationale). I hope this helps. Wishing you the very best with your exam.

Over the years, I have been told by multiple assessors, that students should not work around a theme.

Again, I'm only sharing my personal opinion. The IBO is neutral on the subject (neither for nor against). As a teacher, ALL my students have always had a theme - including those who scored a 7. As an examiner, I find that a theme may focus candidates and add depth to their investigation, but it is a personal choice. Also, professional artists usually explore a theme when exhibiting a body of work, and in this sense, I believe it is good preparation for Art College, as well as making it easier for students to relate/compare their own process to those of the studied artists'.

We have students painting and drawing in an academic style, using flemish and other traditional painting methods...The top students that consistently show proficiency across all works, many reaching a professional portrait painting level, always receive 7 for exhibition. I think, if they demonstrate that level of sophistication across all media they will mark well as long as the works are coupled with conceptual strength . I wouldn't suggest sacrificing technique and proficiency in handling of materials to look experimental in the exhibition, thats what the PP is for.

I would never suggest that anyone "look" experimental - the experimentation and exploration need to be genuine, and must include critical thinking, genuine risk-taking and growth. I agree that a proficiency in skills and techniques is incredibly important, but there is a lot more to the IB Art course than craft and 'the finished product', as the criteria indicate. I also interpret the components (CS, PP, Exhibition) as informing each other and, in many ways, inseparable - none of their aspects should be "sacrificed" in order to achieve "perfect" outcomes - as this may undermine the students’ understanding of the complexity of art in its contemporary context.

hello! i'm starting the ib course in a couple of days, and since things are online we're going to do the comparative study first instead of any artwork. i was wondering whether or not my comparative study needs to have a theme that will be connected to my process portfolio and exhibition? since it is quite early on, i haven't been able to decide on something so it's stressing me out. i prefer doing portraits so it would have that in common but in terms of concepts explored it may not be similar. i'm not sure what to do, will it have that much of an effect? thank you so much for your videos xx

Hi Nejma, thanks for your comment :) The IB does NOT require you to have a theme, so don't get too stressed out about that. However, you've already identified a possible focus (portraits), so while you're working on your CS, try to think of ideas/connections that you may want to explore further in your other 2 components (PP and E). Referring to my video, you've already go 2 possible themes if you choose portraits - identity or texture/skin (there are countless others of course). At this point just start, and with the guidance of your teacher, your work (practical, conceptual + research) will develop organically. In a few months' time you will be in a better position to see a clearer picture ;)

@@IBArtwithMzA Thank you so so much for replying! I decided to focus on identity and i have a rough idea of what i want to explore: something to do with escapism through fantasy, children's book illustrations, dolls etc and how it affects our identity. you're right about letting it develop organically, I'm excited to see where this goes
