All locations are listed on my flickr page. www.flickr.com/photos/route9a...
I have spent the last few years collecting old images of Glasgow and tracing the locations to take a present picture of the same scene.
Up until now they have been saved as stills and posted on my Flickr page here;
www.flickr.com/photos/route9au...
I thought I would try and compile them into a video and if successful I will do the same with some more of my photo projects.
Hope you enjoy the video and remember to have a look on my flickr page for more images of Glasgow then and now.
Dave
P.S. Due to copyright, the original soundtrack of Pink Floyd's Wish you were here had to be replaced.

Thanks. Plenty of debate on that subject. The residents of Cathcart at the time of the battle of Langside were not supporters of Mary so the idea that she stood and watched the battle from Court Knowe is probably Victorian myth and romance. The castle was demolished in 1980. It had stood for 200 years with no roof and became unstable so had to come down before it fell unfortunately.

Just loved this upload, Kudos to the photographer who was remarkably faithful to shot position of the original photographers. The old car ferry across the Clyde, Man o Man!!!! As a kid I went over that regularly with my friend in his dads work van. He used to try to frighten us when strong winds blew the ferry a little of course, He would shout , awe naw, we are going out to sea lol Children are easily kidded, of course we never believed him😳😩 If you go down to the Broomilaw you can still see the moorings where the ferry crossed, in saying that not been there for a few years, but am sure they are still there. Sincere thanks again for the upload.

Thanks Fryodor, I do make it a point to get as close to the original as I can, even when there is a bit of risk involved. If you liked the ferry shot you should check out my footage from the Queen Mary going down the Clyde in 1963 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sYKNFYERoso.html. @@AstonishingGlasgow Knocking down the Vicky?!! Are they leaving Battlefield Rest or is that now long gone?
@AstonishingGlasgow
@AstonishingGlasgow 4 года назад
@@jays2877 Battlefield rest is still there and just celebrated 25 years as a restaurant. The old Vicky has now been replaced by a newer small hospital across the road and the A&E and surgical departments are now contained in a super hospital where the Southern General was. The only part of the Old Vicky that was protected was the small building facing the park entrance but I believe they are going to incorporate the wards in the redevelopment as housing. I have pics on my Flickr page here; www.flickr.com/photos/route9autos/albums/72157675407258336

@@AstonishingGlasgow Thank you so much for that response. I take it that they've sited the "newer small hospital" where the school used to be? I've gone to your Flickr page to have a gander. It was indeed a landmark. I remember it being explained to me as a child that the rounded verandahs (and I seem to remember more than your photos show) were for the convalescence of TB patients who needed the fresh air (probably would have been quite fresh in the early days of the infirmary!). Thank you for preserving memories of the Vicky before it was replaced by more soul-less housing. Glad that Battlefield Rest became a restaurant - hope it's a good one :) I left Glasgow many moons ago and haven't been back for some years and even last time I felt a weird sense of dislocation as there were so many changes. Ah, well, progress I suppose :/
@AstonishingGlasgow
@AstonishingGlasgow 4 года назад
@@jays2877 Yes, the new hospital is where Queens park school was, that burned down around 1996 as I was studying at Langside College when the fire broke out and watched from the window. There were 3 ward blocks on the hospital and they all had verandahs when it first opened but at the time of its closing, two of the wards had their verandahs bricked up. The Victoria hospital was indeed a TB hospital when it was built in the country away from Glasgow city centre but Glasgow soon caught up. I will need to update the folder on Flickr as there has been quite a bit of demolition since the last picture.

The good news is that the open air ampitheatre in Queen's Park has been restored since this video was made. As an Englishman who fell in love with the city and made it his home, I have always been fascinated by its history. On seeing it first, I was struck by the majesty of the ubiquitous 4 storey stone terraces, which to the eyes of a boy brought up in ugly Slough, seemed amazing. But it was a sad fact that during the 20th century, there was just not enough money being generated to sustain this ambitious 19th century townscape.

I'd go back to Edwardian Glasgow with all its pride and splendour, but I'd tell them not to be shocked so much by two World Wars coming their way (both of which would undoubtedly change their city); but the 'real' destruction which took place in the 1960s. They'd be distraught at the thought that much of their (and their parents) hard work would be undone in the the 60s. Grand old buildings torn down, roads widened, trams, as well as a large rail terminus scrapped, whole streets flattened to make way for tower blocks or flyovers. They'd be rightly appalled. For all its 'progressiveness', people forget just how destructive the 1960s were to communities. More damage was done to our cities in that decade than in either of the World Wars.

I was born on Alexandra Parade in Toonhied 1948 but I left in 1966 and I dont see any photos of the Parade on here. My old Schools, Golfhill, is abandoned, and Onslow Drive Secondary School was pulled down for some weird reason and a glass School put in its place. I just dont understand why they destroyed what was old yet well built with style and class, and replace them with something like a high rise ugly glass and plastic structure that will not be standing there in 200 years time like the old buildings have been.

the older pictures looked as if there was a lot going an and Glasgow was full of life, the modern pics look like the city is deserted and dead.

@AstonishingGlasgow
@AstonishingGlasgow 4 года назад
I can tell you because I took the now pic. Its the cemetery keepers house in Cathcart cemetery and is at the end of Clarkston avenue. It has now been renovated and is a private house again. More picture details and locations on my flickr site, see description.

@@AstonishingGlasgow why not just put them in your videos like every other channel. It’s a nice flashback video to watch but not everyone has the time to go tracking down each picture in the video for location and names.
@AstonishingGlasgow

Simple answer is I dont want to. I wanted to show the changes in the city and not have the distraction of text on screen. If people want to know the locations they can go and look them up or be lazy and never know, thats their choice.

so apart from removing industry, old classic places and really decent character which gave it charm it has digressed into a worse place, 2019 hasn't fared any better for it, its reputation alone is horrible, just sayin
