My unveiling and review of a custom-made board from a new company based out of Cyprus: Theo Custom Boards. This is a hand-made board, with the exterior and playing surface composed with vinyl. This is a tournament-size board with hand-laid points, hand-finished checkers, exterior metal-edged corners, and a custom-made cube. Everything is made by hand.
This board will withstand a lot of different environments, and is perfect for taking to the beach, to a campground, or anywhere that a more fragile board wouldn't be a good idea. I love the color combination of the orange and deep red, along with the 'black coffee' exterior. The checkers are gorgeous and have a nice texture.

Theo Boards went with a different platform than Kickstarter, after my video was completed. I wish them the best of luck with this campaign!
I can confidently say that this is a well-made and unique board from a new, small company. I wish Theo Boards ongoing success as these beautiful boards begin to make their way around the world!

A very nice board indeed. I think it must be in the same price range as the Wycliffe Board you have. If I had to make a choice I would go for the Wycliffe, if only for the superb doubling cube.

Barry, Thanks for your comment. I think the Theo Custom Boards may actually be a bit more expensive than even the 23" Wycliffe board with the nickel-plated checkers. This board is definitely more expensive than than the 21" Wycliffe with 'regular' resin checkers (which goes for around $265). The padded surface on the Wycliffe board is definitely 'bouncier' than this Theo boards vinyl surface, but likely not as 'durable' over time, what with stuff getting on the board with regular use. If you are leaning towards a Wycliffe board, I certainly won't steer you in a different direction. They are very nice boards indeed, and the doubling cube is 'gargantuan!' The Theo boards are very attractive, and I think they will hold up very well over time. I played many games on this board over the Thanksgiving holiday and really enjoyed it! Good luck!

Another Beautiful Backgammon Justin. I believe that backgammon is good for partys with a lot of people beacuse you don`t have to worry if they throw food, beer etc.. on that field of vynil, as you say, it is easy to clean surface. Thank you Justin for another great video.

Another interesting and unique board; you seem to specialize in such obtaining and reviewing such boards on a regular basis! I love the color scheme here, but you do seem to point out that the surface is pretty 'dead' in terms of not being padded. What do you think of this board compared to your wool or cotton felt surfaced boards? Your checker play in this video is immaculate! Practically flawless until your double sixes, where you make a very small error, according to XG. Well done! Looking forward to further reviews, although your board collection must be pretty large by now.

Thanks for the checker play analysis! I had a hunch those moves generally played themselves, without any tough decisions. My board ‘library’ is quite extensive, but these boards are such works of art, I like collecting them! In terms of the board surface, it’s not as ‘lively’ or ‘bouncy’ as a felt surface, but it’s sturdy and will make a great board away from home.

Thanks for showcasing another nice looking board. I don't like the way the cover is over the hinges - it seems to draw attention them. If covering the bar is important, it would be much better with sunken hinges that are invisible when covered. But then I see you like it!

Thanks for the comment, Raymond. Hinges are often a sore point with backgammon boards. Ideally, we’d like to not even notice them at all! But that’s not realistic with most boards. These happen to be covered, which I think is more aesthetically pleasing than seeing these hinges, which are clearly not sunken, as you point out. The important point, I think, is that the bar not be cluttered. I’m on the verge of taking this board on the road with me to visit family for Thanksgiving! ✨🦃🎲🎲🪓✨✌🏼

Hi Justin, just love your reviews. Makes us knowledgeable of what is made from various board builders. I wish someone out there would make a surface board out of real leather! That would be an awesome board don’t you think?

Roger, Thanks for your encouraging comment! There are board makers who use leather for the playing surface, though I’m not sure of price or availability. One that comes to mind is Aries boards from Mexico, which are available from GammonVillage online. Maybe check it out! Cheers! 🌟🎲🎲💫

It looks as if the points closest to the camera do not quite fit, and cause the vinyl to bow somewhat. Is this true, or is it a trick of the light?

Stephen, I think I see what you mean when watching the video, but any variations in the points are so infinitesimal that they aren’t noticeable ‘over the board,’ so to speak. Overall, a very well constructed board. Hope you get a chance to play on one some day. Cheers! ✨🎲🎲✨👏🏼💨🌈

Paul, I don't presently own a travel backgammon board, but I know that 869BG (aka 'Erhan boards') makes a travel-size board, so maybe I'll ask them if they can send me one to review.

Justin you need to increase the volume on your videos. They are hard to hear what you are saying. Nice looking set. I am not much of a fan of material over the bar. I can see it being over the hinges but beyond that it's overkill in my opinion. I have a couple of vintage boards that have this feature but it has loosen up throughout the years and now it is a challenge to keep the checkers on the bar during play. This is why I am against a full bar covered with material. Hinges is all that needs covering if you want to cover up something on the bar.

Chris, Thanks for the feedback. Making my videos with nothing but an iPhone has been a challenge. Boards that have no ‘bounce’ are definitely a challenge. The vinyl playing surface here is not lively, but will probably last for years and years. ⏳✨🎲🎲

I can hear your videos fine when I wear headphones, but if I'm just using my laptop speakers, it a little low. Thanks for the videos. I've enjoyed looking at your various boards.

Thanks for sharing. Do you think that wooden boards give a better bounce or roll for the dice, compared to leather, or felted boards?

Jay, This is an interesting question, but I think it really comes down to personal preference. I don’t think wooden boards impart much to the dice, meaning, I don’t think that they contribute much if any bounce. That’s somewhat true of this vinyl board as well, or the cork surface of Crisloid boards. I don’t particularly like wooden surface boards, but some do. I prefer padded playing surfaces. In my opinion, the best dice ‘bounce’ is achieved with a padded wool felt playing surface, like my FTH and Gammoner boards. No matter what board you’re playing on, though, make sure to shake those dice vigorously before each roll! ✨💪🏼🎲🎲✨

Interesting back story, but I'm not convinced I would like the vinyl surface; it really does appear to be pretty 'dead' in terms of the dice action. Otherwise, a perfect board to take on a road trip, or anywhere that 'stuff' might end up on the board surface. Well done, and I hope you have more boards in the pipeline!

Dr. Fly, the vinyl probably isn't to everyone's taste, especially those board owners who are spoiled by a lively felt playing surface. But, you are correct, this is an excellent board for those locations that more 'fragile' boards should not be exposed. I do have at least one board in the 'pipeline,' a travel-size board from Istanbul. Stay tuned!

@@EricPetersen2922 - Eric, the nice thing is that the vinyl can be cleaned easily. The surface is pretty dead already, I can’t imagine it could get much ‘deader!’

The metal angle on the underside is rough, some of the vinyl points are very poorly cut and those hinges scream bodgy job. Colours are nice but not a board for me.
