Notwithstanding that Fr. Behr was not talking to a Catholic audience, I wish he would have opined whether Origen should be canonized.

I think that train left the station a long time ago and its relevance with it. Fr. Behr and other theologians will be working to show us who Origen really was by translating him anew. Ecumenical Councils condemning Origen centuries after his death are accepted by convention and piety demands we not controvert them. If better exposition of Origen shows us that he is not condemnable future argument might rise to conciliar level that could lift the condemnation. But it will take a lot of work to recover Origen before it could happen and theologians won’t be jumping the gun. I know Abp. Alexander Golitzin is effusive in his admiration of Origen who was so influential among early church fathers, but sophomores of orthodoxy have jumped all over it to discredit the theology of the Abp., as an ad hominem not dissimilar to Origen’s own calumniation.

@@claesvanoldenphatt9972 Origen is not a saint hes a perennialist freak who's teachings are condemned at every ecumenical synod and the fathers after his death worked hard to condemn his false teachings
