Theory: Krukov is Boris / Krukov is YOU! | Red Alert 3

Welcome to another C&C game theory video! This theory features General Krukov from Commander & Conquer: Red Alert 3 as well as Boris, the heroic Soviet commando from Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge.
General Krukov has more lore behind him than we might think. This speculation of his true identity & his significance to the CnC timeline / story / plot offers two possibilities:
1. General Krukov is Boris (promoted during the Post-War Crisis. This also explains what happened to Boris in RA3 as well as where Natasha Volkova came from) - 1:49
2. General Krukov is the unnamed & faceless Soviet commander you, the player, played as in the Red Alert 2 universe (the guy who worked with Zofia to defeat the Allies & Yuri) - 6:37
Let me know who you think Krukov really is! Also could there be more to Cherdenko & Dr. Zelinsky as well? Also as you may have noticed, our next theory is already well on its way and will focus on the Generals & Tiberium universe!

when krukov says "you can't be serious" he could mean that he cannot believe they have a time machine and they're going to try to fix the past again, like he's just seen a ghost because it must have been 10 years since then.

@@xyhc-cnc Yeah, it could be a "You can't be serious (for once we don't have to steal Allies' tech and have our own?)". In Yuriko's campaign there is a file entry on Zelinsky and it says that he is an expert in his field of physics and special relativity, but a complete nut case [we know the reason for his mental state is his guilt for creating the War of Three Powers and anxiety over what else he might have created]. And considering that this entry was made by the Empire's own scientists describing the head scientist of their enemy, they possibly weren't lying.

It is more likely that Krukov is the unamed commander of RA2. Why? Just listen to how Cherdenko called Krukov at the opening scene he said "comrade GENERAL" now compare it to how Yuri called the unamed commander "comrade GENERAL". Now you may ask there are many Generals in the USSR, Yes that is true, but look at his attitude when it comes to Dasha, he respected her, which means he recognizes the hard work of dasha because he also experienced it with the other chick. Now I am not sure but feel free to criticize. And yeah didn't he mention that Krukov was one of the few military officers who survived the post-war timeline?

It basically would uproot everything I had done, and I was getting older as the time went on. Damn, I was pretty convinced by both these theories (that's he's either Boris, or the RA2 commander) until you brought up that excellent point about him being incredulous about using a time machine to fix things. The machine even looks a bit similar to the one in Yuri's Revenge (except with tesla bits on it), so if this was following on from the RA2 Soviet ending, then if Krukov was Boris or the player then he should definitely have recognised it and already had personal experience of using such a time machine. However... if it follows on from the RA2 Allies timeline, and it was the Allies that time travelled and solved the Yuri crisis, then it's conceivable that neither Boris nor the RA2 Soviet Commander would have known about time travel. So I think for Krukov to be Boris or the player from RA2, the Allied Yuri's Revenge would have to be the canon ending. And since previously they've always had it that the "good guys" ending is the canon one, I guess that makes sense. A shame though, because I always loved the ending of Yuri getting sent back to dinosaur times and eaten by a T-Rex.

Pretty sweet theories. After all Red Alert 3 had a lot of call backs to the previous Red Alert. I think if you recall the short-lived EA show "Battlecast Primetime" it was revealed there that the old man in the opening cinematic was the original Soviet Commando in Red Alert 1: Volkov and his dog Chitzkoi. Disclaimer: I will choose to believe the commander theory because it will make the child inside me so freakin happy. More seriously though, I think this theory holds a lot of merit. As you said we can never be completely sure. But as for the plot hole you talked about, I can think of several reasons why Krukov would be so hesitant to jump in the time machine even if he has done it before. 1- Last time it was the Einstein that built the machine for the technologically advanced allies. He can't believe/doesn't trust that the soviets have it. 2- Last time they traveled back in time shit got screwed anyway as apparent by the defeat of the USSR in the post war crisis. 3- It would mean that all he has done in his career so far may be thrown out the window... Also as a side not, I think Krukov must be a talented commander because even in the new timeline they created, he is a high ranking general. This means that he was able to reach that position all over again. I don't think he was just "teleported" from the old timeline because Dasha did recognize him as a general.

That's kinda a theory I have about General Carville from Red Alert 2 but it goes, that General Carville was the original Allied Commander in the first Red Alert. As a young man, Carville like Tanya in the first RA volunteered to be a commander in the Allied Military to assist the European nations in the war against Stalin and his advancing army. My main source of evidence is when Carville gets killed and Lieutenant Eva mentions that "Carville always knew that YOU would lead the Allied Forces" this implies that Carville was most likely a superior officer within the Allied Coalition, yet how did he get that rank? There's a part of me that kinda thinks this is rubbish but, ehh. I'd like to see what you make of it?

I actually have my theories about the RA3 Tanya just because she is so confusing of a character. She is supposedly from this new timeline as she has a different hairstyle (even though she could have dyed her hair, it’s a pretty common thing) though she has technology that isn’t from this timeline and in the final mission to the Soviet Campaign (I know it’s not the canonical Allied campaign but whatever) she specifically says “Just like old times, eh? Commie scum.” If she is from this new universe how does she know about an event that never took place? And we know it didn’t take place because the Statue of Liberty is still standing and was never destroyed. So who IS the RA3 Tanya?

Mental Omega actually has a very interesting theory about Tanya - the name doesn't belong to a person, but rather is a codename for a select operative that has survived a brutal training course dubbed "Bellum regalem" (Battle Royale in Latin) that consists of every possible challenge thrown at an agent. So in theory, she's the equivalent of GDI's Commandos from Tiberium Wars.

Something that bothers me is why Krukov suddenly got tons of medals comparing the start of the story and the first time he appeared in a playable mission? As someone else said in the comment, I think the main reason of Krukov being so nervous and said "I don't understand" is because does killing Einstein really offer a fix to the current solution. The moment where Krukov said "nuclear" and "atomic", he assumed that Soviet still have good technologies on hand despite the death of "Eistein". Perhaps he didn't think carefully or expecting someone else will develop such technology, or maybe he is just not as deep thought as the nerdy scientist, in perhaps a time traveling process that might takes less than 10 minutes. I agree with the part where Krukov attitude changed after time traveling. But actually Cherdenko is more arrogant than Krukov :(
@chaoslacky1585

If it helps fix the "plot hole" of Boris being Krukov because of him not knowing\trusting time travel there is one possible explanation. Whether or not Boris time travels in the first Yuri's Revenge mission depends on how the game plays out. If Boris is killed during the first part of the mission you just meet his past self after the time travel. If that is the cannot route then there is no reason why Boris would be aware of time travel.

A way around that flaw could be that Krukov is Boris but he died once in the first soviet mission of RA2 YR. If Boris dies in the Jurassic or before you obtain the time machine, Zofia will ask that you find Boris after returning to the past, he then reappears after the second time travel attempt and can survive till the end without ever time travelling. They probably even were first from the red alert time line but travelled to the Tiberium universe Both kane and Yuri look almost the same but with a bit facial differences Or Cabal could even be the alternate universe counterpart of Yuri, both of them are sadistic and cocky

We can't be fully sure that Krukov's first name is Boris. While the loading screen says that his first name is Boris, during the opening of the fourth Soviet mission in Geneva, Cherdenko sends off the general with the words "Bottoms up, Nikolai." We can't say if EA made this intentionally or by mistake. All that makes the second theory of Krukov being the RA2 player more plausible.

Actually, here's a thought: What if Krukov is actually Boris as some people thought. However, he was a Boris from the previous Red Alert 2 Timeline before the Time Machine was used. The "Yuri War" timeline. Let me explain. In Red Alert 2's first Soviet Mission, Boris alongside a bunch of Soviet units, are sent to hijack the Allied Time Machine during the "Psychic Dominator Network" timeline. At this point, they are simply following orders and have no idea if it will even work or not. However, the mission is carried out. There is however, no requirement for Boris to survive. If Boris should unfortunately fall; Lt. Zophia will remind you, that presuming the Time Travel is successful, you'll be able to re-hook up with Boris in the Soviet Base in the past (changing it to the "Yuri War timeline" since they are able to stop Yuri from getting his dominators online). But if the Boris in the present lives, the Boris in the past never shows up. With this knowledge, let's say Boris tragically dies fighting to capture the Time Machine, but the other Soviets succeed in Time Travel. In this case; Boris would have no knowledge of the Time Travel being successful, other then Lt. Zophia's word, and their knowledge being able to stop Premier Romanov from being captured by the Allies or killed by Yuri. So at the end of the day; Boris would just be following orders, not entirely aware of the Time Travel thing as a whole. Even if Yuri used the Time Machine and got stuck in the past; Boris would still be 100% unaware of the Time Travel; since nobody would need to tell him. Fast forward to the Allies/Soviets war following Yuri's defeat, and Boris could've been promoted to a High Ranking official of the Soviet Union, a Hero to the Soviet people being promoted to a high up general after his efforts at stopping Yuri and slowing down the Allies invasion. And while Premier Romanov fled to escape capture; Cherdenko could then inform Boris/Krukov of his plan to travel back in time. Since the Boris of the past didn't time travel, he never had any direct exposure to Time Travel; and thereby still makes the theory that Krukov is Boris possible. Something to think about, Comrade General.

There are however 2 potential holes and 1 potential helper in your theory if YR being Soviet campaign canon (and I admit to liking this theory because while I love the Allies, the Soviet campaign is more fun). Helper: Soviet space technology. The Soviets were experimenting in YR and had a space station at the end. They clearly have some space capability in RA3, but the Allies do as well in RA3 and they did nothing space related in YR. Now who's space capabilities are better depends on the player. Hole 1: the final Soviet victory clearly shows Soviet troops parading down Wallstreet indicating an occupied America. It's unlikely America as the head of the Allies would be able to plot anything while being completely occupied. Further, in YR the time you kill Enstein, the Allies were well on their way to winning, already. So I doubt they would've just surrendered at that point. Hole 2: Eva states the "Soviet have surrendered" it doesn't mean the Allies occupied the USSR. Yes they exposed Yuri early, which robbed Russia of her psychic tech, but by doing so many previous battles are now no longer valid. Meaning the Allies no longer have knowledge of how the war plays out. It's possible that the Soviets had tactically and strategically lost but the Allies didn't fight them to the point of collapse because they needed the Soviet war machine to finish the job against Yuri

It might still come of the alliad compaign in yuris refenge. At the end the timelines merge. Who know what affects that had on events that happended before hand. So he could still be boris but from the Alliad victory campaign. They might have even gotten a new premier after the old one got captured. There are a lot of options cause time travel is a thing that F's with everything. This might also explain why a lot of higher ups in the union flet or surrendered they already lost once and it seem to be going the same way again.

There is an explanation to the fact why Krukov didn't know about time travel in the "Krukov is Boris" theory. In the first Soviet mission in YR, there is a possibility that Boris will die before the time travel. When you meet him again, he will ask "Have I been gone somewhere, Lieutenant Zofia?". It means that he didn't know about the time travel. So Krukov might be the past version of the Boris saved by the time travel as the present version died fighting the Allies or a T-rex.

Actually, if you do play the Soviet campaign in Yuri's Revenge, there was that little caveat when the Soviets overcharged the Time Machine and went way back in time. Both the Soviet commander and Boris had to fend off waves of hostile dinosaurs before they made a time shift to their original destination (and there is a chance Boris does not survive this encounter). Considering these events, whether if Krukov was Boris or the Soviet commander, I do believe they will get nervous if something similar happened again, and without the means to return. Refer to Yuri's fate if you completed the Soviet campaign (the Time Machine was remotely overcharged, and with no power left to operate it, Yuri was at the mercy of a particular T-Rex).
@SIG442
@SIG442 4 года назад
Nice theory, but that very last fact causes it all to crumble. The chances it being Boris just based up on a name and some similarities isn't a good way to link the two characters. I mean, you could in that regard also link Hitler and Churchill with each other and claim they are the same person. We know they are 2 different people, but in both cases they managed to build things up and break things down. Both have a lot of blood on their hands and you could even argue what was good and bad in both regarding that very topic. So I hope you understand what I am trying to say with this. Also how would it be possible for Boris to loose his Russian accent so quickly? It doesn't make sense. For the player of RA2 being Krukov, well it's again trying to match 2 people who are in fact not always the same. One player isn't the same as the next meaning you can't really claim that the Russian player commander is in that regard Krukov. There are a lot of players that choose either the allied side or yuri's side respectfully. So that would make the choice of making the soviet player commander a very bad choice. If that truth ever came out then there would be hell to pay. A third option you didn't really explore much, is a unknown commander that we haven't seen before. This means that you are trying to link a character with 2 different ideas which will never match up. I'm pretty sure you know that toy with the shaped holes where you needed to fit the right blocks in when you were very young? Well this general idea also counts for any character you may see in any game. That it has the general idea of a specific character doesn't mean it's the right fit. After all, trying to ram the cylinder in a triangle hole doesn't work. Now a fourth option would be that the developers made a mistake. Simply changing specific things even if they are small could hold big implications. The voice of a character for example as I mentioned with Boris should be at least similar to fit the bill, not be suddenly completely different. Another issue would be the height, body posture, how someone moves, how someone acts, etc. Obviously the idea of Boris being promoted is a viable option, but Krukov does not seem to be the same height, his body posture is completely different, he moves differently entirely and he acts also differently. Now, for moving and body posture i guess we can blame the graphics from RA2 not being all to great. Including the characters being kinda small to really make much sense. However we can notice on how both act that it's actually different from each other. Boris loves to use his AK out which is well maintained while Krukov isn't even armed at all, Boris will likely never be found without weapons as it isn't in his nature and training. Also Krukov seems to be unaware of specific special forces training which he should have had if he was Boris. How can we verify this? Simple, Krukov lacks any common sense that a special forces operative or even a commander should have. So in that it rules out both the Soviet player commander as Boris. Another issue would be that if you change a character that should be based up on the game before, but you change fundamental aspects of that character without adding good reason you simply will end up with a bad idea that tries to overwrite what was there before. So if this is the case, the studio made a grave error in judgement. So in the end: Boris = unlikely unless the studio rewritten a lot to make it fit the new RA3 story narrative. Soviet player commander = Very unlikely, it will end up causing more problems then do good. Yes, it's written in a time where people didn't cry like babies over feelings. But it would seriously cause people to get angry as not everyone plays the same or on the same side. Unknown Soviet commander = Most likely scenario Studio making mistakes in changing a existing character = highly probable, it wouldn't be the first time that a character was butchered to fit the narrative

Krukov can’t be the RA2 Commander. Why? Because the victory of the player’s faction depends on said commander’s presence. There cannot be two player characters existing at once in a given timeline as one outcome or the other must occur, not both. Let’s call this Schrodinger’s Commander. Given the Allied victory scenario of RA1, the stage is set for the Third World War and the invasion of the United States. At the Start Campaign screen of RA2’s main menu, the Commander cannot be “observed” by us as working for the Allies or Soviets. Once the player clicks one of the faction emblems to start Mission 1 of the chosen campaign, the Commander is observed as commanding either Allied forces in the defense of New York City or Soviet forces in the invasion of Washington, D.C.. As such, only one outcome is possible for each respective faction following the events of each campaign: either Yuri disappears and Romanov is captured, setting off the events of Yuri’s Revenge, or Yuri and Romanov die and the Commander/General becomes Premier. That means the Allied You’re also probably wondering if YR’s commander matters. It does. For the events of the Post-War Crisis, leading to Krukov’s rise to significance, to occur, *the Allies must be the ones to have the Commander that defeats Yuri’s forces on both occasions.* Therefore, there are only two possible scenarios for Krukov’s backstory: 1. He’s Boris. -OR- 2. He’s just a random Soviet general with no story relevance prior to the day of the activation of the Soviet time machine involving himself, Cherdenko, and Dr. Zelinsky. Personally, I want #1 to be true, but keep in mind that Boris is a pretty common name. ADDENDUM: Do you seriously believe that, had Krukov been either Boris or the RA2 Commander, he wouldn’t have doubted Cherdenko’s plan? Both versions of Krukov would remember how much the engineers messed up the power calculations for the captured time machine. What makes you think he wouldn’t say “NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT, I DON’T TO DEAL WITH MORE DINOSAURS” after recalling trying to survive, even for a matter of minutes, in the Cretaceous era?
@lolsterf4147
@lolsterf4147 3 года назад
One year ago but screw it. I kinda like both ideas for different reasons. Lets actually start with some assumptions. Starting with Boris. Boris being Krukov is plausible as you said there wouldn't be many generals by the time of EA Romania's Post-War crisis RA-tie in game. In the game, you are at the brink of defeat and have to defend 2 time machines. One defended by you and the other defended by Bronislav(who fails and dies.) You succeed and it makes sense that just after that you try to go back to find anyone who can give orders you. Prompting you (Boris) to go back and try to operate the time machine that you protected. As for Boris Krukov's reluctance to even get into the time machine, like one commenter here said, its Zelinksky's time machine and not Einstiens, but at the same time .... correct me if I'm wrong. Boris would've time-travelled and saw giant dinosaurs. Imagine being Boris, a front-line commando having to shoot a bunch of dinosaurs, which if he failed to even shoot at one, he'd be eaten by it. I've seen the joke here that Boris doesn't swim because of giant squids, maybe the same applies with dino's? For the RA 2 commander being Krukov also makes sense, consider this fact...what if Boris' statement of, "Russia's fate is with me" is taken literally? In the post-war crisis, Boris is already dead. And really, why would they make a front-line commando a general? He shoots people good he should stay there where he's tried and true. Its much better to put someone who's been in a leadership position to actually control and defend against the allied advance. Who's better suited to that, than the guy who literally put the premier back. He'd scraped a victory out of Hell's grasp and you'd better believe that he'd try to do so again. But my assumption is that the RA 2 soviet commander only starts to exist or starts becoming competent on the "Yuri Crisis", this is really just so that Bronislav's dialogue to the RA 2 commander in the Post-war crisis makes sense, if he was competent even before the yuri crisis, he'd be well trusted. If he was only competent in the Yuri Crisis, some might say that he's lucky and therefore pay little to no respect to his achievements. Anyways, after doing the post-war crisis he goes into the premier's office to recuperate and finds no one to truly be in charge. He then gets beckoned by Cherdenko and he's skeptical of Zelinsky's time machine(for explanations use both dino arguement and 'Not Einstien from above). Regardless, Either canditate for Krukov would've had to fight the 2nd War over again(this time without Yuri throwing wrenches everywhere). They would've experienced that timeline fought and won. They might've become cocky because they know they're kind-of starting on the best foot forward either way. Now then those are the ideas i went with for why both make sense. But why do I like either? Boris being Krukov goes with the idea that there is no mention of any RA commander after their respective game. They exist solely as vehicle of control for the player and really EA can just put the achievements spread out with different commanders if they really wanted to. Boris fulfills that idea and cmon Boris cool and Boris is the fate of Russia. Its just cool. The RA 2 soviet commander is great simply for the fact that, we don't really know what the traits of the commander truly is. He could be anything and imo being contradictory to any one nature makes sense when he's supposed to be just controlled by a player. If he was an amalgamation of the players mindsets, generalized and materialized into being 'Krukov' that would be awesome. Think about it, I remember Krukov being cocky, utterly useless and passive in most cases. But what if...think about it, Krukov is the player playing with ally bots(which is you and lets say Oleg,Zhana or Moskvin.).... He WOULD think you're useless, he WOULD be cocky. He's playing with bots, this is a game to him. Of course! He wouldn't help you, he doesn't need you. Of course, he'd take your resources, you're going to be bad with it anyways. And when he fails? He blames the stupid bots because their the important ally that he needs to protect. He could do this on his own, he's the player character, but he's given a dumb ally. Regardless this has been my useless and probably spread out points of a ted-talk. I hope you didnt lose any brain cells while reading this.

8:03 Premier is a title/position in the Soviet Union, so it doesn't necessarily refer to Premier Romanov from RA2. It could have still been Romanov, or it could have been his successor after he was captured. I love both theories though; you totally sold me on the idea that Krukov is the RA2 commander. I think it makes more sense that the canon RA2 ending is the Allies, because that would explain why Krukov is hesitant and in disbelief about time traveling - iirc the Soviets for the most part never knew about the Allies' time travel. Maybe Zelinsky since he makes a passing reference to Einstein but I would imagine time travel is the sort of thing that would be on a need-to-know basis.

I like to think that boris went a warriors death rather than a desk commander. For krukov as the player, that is a good call but as far as the canon is concerned, canon timeline is the allied one and as for the battle promotion or ranking, it depends if you finished a node within a specific time limit, krukov might just be a random high ranking official that lived through all those bitter years. For krukov x time travel, if krukov is really the player for the past two wars, he might just be afraid of fighting Yuri again, going back in time might not be the same timeline as we know of, of yuri. Or fighting all those wars is just too tiring, trust and betrayal.

Krukov is more definitely Boris, the only reason he doesn’t remember using the time machine is because he never actually used it. In Yuri’s revenge first soviet mission when you travel back in time you lost the original Boris and find the version of the past that, of course, never used the machine. When your assistant says that she’s really happy to see him he doesn’t know what she’s talking about and when he asked she dismiss him, so no one explain him or tell him about the time machine.
