T.H Marshall’s Idea on Citizenship
T.H Marshall can be regarded as the key contributor of the modern concept of citizenship, who tried to provide a universal notion of citizenship based on equality and right, grounded on historical development.
T.H Marshall tried to link citizenship with social class in the context of rise of capitalism and its moist important byproduct- the market.
In his book ‘’Citizenship and social class’’ (1950), T.H Marshall defines citizen as full and equal member of a political community, i.e. the state, whereas he explains ‘citizenship’ as the process of expanding equality against the inequality of social class.
