Every planet in the Kerbol system holds some sort of mystery, even Dres (I assure you, it does exist). In this video, I go into detail about Dres' characteristics and try to explain the unusual Dresteroid Belt.

Since the highlands are a different shade of grey, it's not too hard to assume that the impact of the two bodies caused extreme volcanism. Covering the lowlands in deep Basalt.

So the highlands are the volcanoes that covered the lowlands in basalt and became extinct and got covered in material making them lighter, higher and turn them into plateus?

I think the highlands could be explained by Debris from the impact that came back down to the surface. It could be remnants of the old crust Made of a more resistant material.

Ok this is my short thermodynamics for the asteroids. A pol size object did hit Dre’s but it scrapped off a large part of the surface instead of impact directly which formed the Dres canyon.
@joeallen9104
@joeallen9104 Год назад
I think that Dres formed in the asteroid belt it is currently located in, but it wasn't the only one to do so, and that until relatively recently there was another such object. However due to the combined influence of Duna and Jool, the two dwarf planets converged and collided into on object now known as Dres. A lot of material was ejected from the collision, some of it formed the ring system but most of it escaped Dres' sphere of influence and joined the asteroid belt.

I guess the meme is to shit on Dres, but I kinda like going there. I landed at the edge of the Canyon last time I went, so that was neat. Problem is, every 3 out of 5 times I go there I'll get a bugged maneuver, or I'll timewarp and my whole orbit shifts losing my encounter. Pain in the ass. Always remember to quicksave, kids!

What if Dres once was a Jool Moon? a bigger one, but given the extreme events around Jools SOI maybe it impacted with another body of considerably size and mass might have impacted with it and throw it away from Jool. The debris of both formed what now is Dres, explaining the patches of different colors in the surface and the asteroid belt are debris that got captured by the planetoid SOI.

Perhaps the collision that lead to the formation of the ring was a glancing blow from a small but fast moving object, with the impact site centred by the Dres Canyon? Any icy or dusty material could have shrouded the whole planet, leaving only the larger, major craters unchanged, and without the need for a total resurfacing event - some material could have been jetisoned from the Dresian system entirely. I also find it plausible that interractions between the debris could have lead to some interesting resonance amongst themselves, sort of like Prometheus and Epimethius of Saturn, which could keep the ring circular and within certain constraints? Brilliant video, just discovering your series now, can't wait for more! Quick edit - it was thankfully pointed out to me that it's Janus and Epimetheus, not Prometheus: My bad!

I have another far fetched theory on Dres. Maybe it had ice or water at a point due to the fact it has a massive canyon. And the only thing I know of to cause canyons like that is water and a long time like on earth with the grand canyon. Idk maybe there are other ways to form a canyon.
@antlionworkerfan2007
@antlionworkerfan2007 Год назад
Perhaps a comet impact temporary filled some bit of the dwarf planet with water near a mountain range then creating a canyon before freezing over then the ice was covered up by constant meteor bombardment
@yagirljunee
@yagirljunee 7 месяцев назад
well since this video was posted, Dres was given a ring system (similar to the real dwarf planet, Quaoar) in KSP2, and i feel that gives this theory more credibility, as ring systems usually form after collisions (It's thought Earth had rings for a time between the collision with Theia and the formation of the moon)
@yagirljunee

additionally, dres seems to have a straight line of lighter material along the equator, im assuming it's ejecta that was once in orbit, but eventually fell back to the surface. hell, dres may have a moon in a few hundred thousand years

An impact also could been the reason for Dres's high inclination as long as it came from an angle well outside the ecliptic. Possibly even an interstellar asteroid venturing into the system?

@everybodyants

I think, that due to the highlands being very randomly scattered and having a different color, we could theorize, that they might be the remains of the old crust. Of course, all of the old surface is pretty much gone, so there aren't any more craters in the highlands, than in the lowlands. Also, yes, as the top comment says, the lowlands are likelly made of basalt, that came from the mantle, assuming, that it was molten at the time. Possibly from Jool tides, but it's unlikelly. Maybe Dres was at some point a sixth moon of Jool, what would support the molten mantle and major impact theories. Dres was maybe hit by a big asteroid or comet passing Jool, or even (this is VERY far fetched) a small proto moon on an eliptical orbit. Safe to say, all that's just my smooth monkey brain trying to speculate something, that mskes sense. That's just a theory. A game theory.

i think that duna is very young, only like 100 million years old. It must have had a ring of debris around it. but then why would there be a giant gap? i think that around 40 million years ago in the kerbol system a large object about 80 km in size extremely rich in frozen water and a form of dirt grazed right past duna, sweeping its inner ring away with it. i also think that the small planet 80km in size entered the Jool system, colliding with laythe and since it was rich in frozen water, and dirt, when it collided it sent millions of tons of that stuff into laythe, slowly turning it into a habitable planet. boom boom 2 theorys in one video badda bing badda boom
